Preseason- Raptors

Post#1 » by SoCalJazzFan » Mon Oct 3, 2022 12:41 am

THT looks like Charles Barkley, (edit current Barkley) but without any of the talent. Might be too early to take this position, but looks like a bad trade as he has a player option next year.

Butler continues to disappoint. I really expected more from him.

It's going to be a looong season esp if these old dudes like Gay, JC, Olynyk keep getting so many minutes.
They could seriously cut at least half a dozen guys from the bottom of this roster and no other team would pick them up.

Why did Conley, Gay and Olynyk play so much? If we were showcasing them for trades it really did not come off well.....

On the bright side, Markannen looked really good, Kessler has potential, although he looked a bit slow, but it was his first game in a while.....

Sexton looks like a slightly more talented Clarkson...... THT, boy what a mess he is.......

Could be worse the Suns actually lost a preseason game to an ABL team.

I'm fine with Conley getting 20ish minutes. The entire team is new and they need the preseason to gel. It doesn't matter how long Mike has been in the league, he still needs court time with his new teammates. Mike is going to be the stability of this team for as long as he's on the roster. (I'm glad he's on the roster, as even a young tanking team, needs leadership.)

I believe Olynyk is going to be a starter, and like Conley and everyone else on the roster, needs court time with his new teammates. Again, 20ish minutes is fine with me.

Gay, on the other hand, I don't understand, unless they are trying to show other teams he still has something left in the tank for a trade. But, TBH, he looked like garbage last year and then again yesterday, so it might be pointless. Clarkson may be the exception to the rule, and doesn't really need to "mesh" with the team, because, well ... he just does his own thing regardless of who's out there. So perhaps his minutes could be trimmed to open up a few more for others. If it's up to me, Gay gets 0 min and JC gets about 10-12, all in the first half.

I think the 3 players who I felt the best about after 1 game are; NAW, Markkanen & Vanderbilt. Kessler and Sexton were also fine and did their thing.

I want to see more of Fontecchio (who I think may be the surprise of the team) and Agbaji. Maybe a few more minutes to Kessler & THT, as well. Sexton also needs a few more minutes, IMO.

It's going to be a long season, ya'll. Try to not get too worried/frustrated, and just enjoy the small victories, like individual improvements and the hope of the 2023 draft.

We are tanking. Gay should get 48 minutes every game.

Yeah it's only the first preseason game but last night was pretty ugly.

Lauri looks as expected and should be a fine Bogey replacement. I liked Vanderbilt's energy even though he's pretty raw offensively.

Overall Danny's trades aren't looking that great although it's way too early to make any kind of assessment at this point. I was really hoping that Kessler could at least provide just a tiny bit of Gobert's ability to block shots but having serious reservations about his athleticism. Beasley is a straight out gunner and is going to have bad shooting nights like he did last night. THT just looked out of shape. Agbaji I guess was a bright spot during garbage time and should get more minutes as the season progresses. Honestly thought Sexton could at least provide 50% of what they got from Don. He made 3 of 4 of his 3's but it was difficult to watch that lineup with JC and Gay. Despite that Sexton did manage the best +/- last night whatever that is worth. Not much to say about Olynyk he knows how to play the game but he shot 0 for 7. Fontecchio is a guy I want to see get more minutes. NAW was a little disappointing after all the talk we heard about him in camp last week.

The main takeaway is they really need to cut Gay and find another home for Clarkson asap. Neither one even tried to play a team game. Butler obviously had a really rough night. Conley can still play but I wouldn't give him much more than 20 mins a night.

Touche'! lol Gay is pretty bad. 48 minutes with no energy other one missed dunk a game would help with losing, for sure!

But they are also trying to develop talent. IMO, Conley is helpful in that regard, whereas Gay is not.

I think one is just as useful as the other. Vanderbilt can learn a few things about offense from Gay, for example. But we need to trade both.

I think Conley should play. Scoring guards like Beasley, Sexton and Clarkson, very rarely learn to be good play makers. They are usually scoring guards, because they don't have high court vision or basketball IQ. So trying to force them to be something they are not doesn't usually end well. So having Conley there to teach them even something and making sure forwards and centers are involved in games it a good thing. So I would keep him until trade deadline.

Trading Clarkson and Gay would be a dream come true, but if they keep playing like they did who wants them. Also I think Gay doesn't want to be here. I think he wants to play for ring.

But some positives. I did like the defense and running game. I think that is what Hardy want's now and in the future. There was lot of bad stuff, but it was expected. Team haven't been together long and they are not top teams in NBA.

I believe Kessler did really well considering he couldn’t play in the summer league because of the trade. This was his first actual nba like game

Early take, but I think he is probably the best center we have drafted since Gobert (and there have been quite a few).

Good point, lol! Feels like we did since it was essentially this year’s pick.
