I thought Bouknight was similar as a prospect to Monk, but not as good. Hes a little bigger and I think he might have a slightly better 1st step, but also has worse feel, worse handle, and has never actually been a reliable outside shooter at any level (whereas Monk was a sniper in HS and college). He definitely has talent, but he was two years older than one and done guys and the only thing he was really effective at in his two years of college was driving layups. I think he was more of a guy you take in the 15-25 range where his upside really starts to outweigh the negatives. I think he was a pretty big reach at 11 in what is looking to be a historically good draft class.
I think JB was given a playoffs or fired mandate last season and thats why he suddenly shifted from a development focus to almost being Clifford'esque in his rotation decisions. Bouk wasn't ready last year and JB was possibly coaching for his job, so he didn't really get the developmental attention that he needed throughout the season and he didn't seem to take it well personally, to say the least.
I doubt he gets the proper attention this year, but the roster is set up so that Clifford might be forced to give him some minutes anyways. When fully healthy, I think he'll at best be 9th in the rotation. Martin and Oubre will be the first off the bench and very likely at least one big, just by virtue of how rosters work, and guys like McDaniels and Thor could easily end up ahead of him too and could push him out of the rotation, especially if he is unable to function as a pseudo backup PG (which isn't looking likely).
He could still be a useful player, but this seems like it might be a bad situation for him and the off the court red flags are a bit worrying as well.
Pretty well said. Can’t really argue with this. Only thing I would add as a bonus compared to Monk is that Bouk has alpha/all star potential, where as Monk will always be a solid role player. Could argue one is better than the other though, particularly if the potential all star never lives up to that potential.
