4TH Q: SPURS 97 PELICANS 111
Hey we won a Q! 31-24 in the 4TH. It just so happens that Dom Barlow scored 9 points on perfect 4-4, 1-1 from 3 along with 3 boards (2 on O) and a block for the fourth highest points total on the team, and a team-high +11. Yes, that *is* how causality works! lol
No but seriously, even if it was against whichever opponents, He fared far better in his role ON BOTH ENDS than other guys fighting for positions. More polished than Jeremy at the moment, if I may say. Better than Joe or Romeo or Alize. Hall hasn't really stood out badly but not well either.
If it were up to me, I'd keep Diop and Barlow based on play alone.
Jeremy's being used as a utility guy who floats around and gets the leftovers, except for when he pops out for a 3. Active, athletic, but we need to include him in some sets specifically for him, specifically something closer to the rim.
Blake running point is a work in progress. Mal's going to be a bucket. Good arms out and active feet on D.
The guys have said that we're nowhere near to running sets like we did even last season, keeping things simple, getting guys to create shots within the flow of the game, reading and reacting. That's fine, but it makes for a lot of picks and over dribbles which defenses are well versed in stopping. Not a lot of interior points. We did a better job last game with some high low attempts.
We had nice shot distribution, perhaps too egaliratian as there's no clear go-to guy, but it's also a function of Keldon and Primo being out. No Spur took more than nine shots. A few were efficient, the rest far from it for another poor shooting performance of 36.6FG%, 26.5% from 3 (13-49 -- this has to be a record, right?! Don't recall the last time or any time previously when our 3s attempts started with a "4" let alone nearly hit the 50 mark); 76.2% FTs.
Our shot chart matches the eye test and stats: tons of 3s attempted and lots of misses in the key. 42-32 points in the paint against.
We started well with the TOs but ended up with 17 on which we gave up 18 points (but got 22 off of theirs, so that's a plus).
Doug and JRich are/should totally be trade bait. Good showing by them from that POV. One and two on the team in scoring without our regular starters.
Romeo plays like he has a guaranteed contract and doesn't have to fight for a job. Really irritating. Alize Johnson is not a NBA-level player. Hall hasn't stood out enough. Joe is apparently making his shots in practice but still hasn't shown enough consistency and may be in danger of getting his spot taken. Nothing's a given. Kuhse has stood out as a player who knows what to do with and off ball.
In our next game, we'll have everyone back so it'll be a better gauge of how we look as a team. Looking forward to it.
