Another issue was the stupid trade made for Nance. PDX pick is lotto protected through 2028, which on the surface is no big deal. But if we were trying to trade Dame and skirt the Steipen rule, we have picks or swaps to offer. And what little flexibility we did have with the MIL '25 pick was gone in the Jerami Grant deal, and then somehow not getting a 1st in return for Powell and RoCo

We can offer to remove the protection on that pick making it have to transfer if needed. The team would likely take that deal in an instant because then they would potentially get a lottery pick out of it. Everyone acts like it's some huge issue but if we really needed to have that pick transfer we could.
Anyways in general the Blazers need their picks more than most other teams, we don't have superstars beating down our door when they are free agents so anytime we get a top 5 pick it's very precious to us. Every team wants a top 5 pick, but in comparison to the Lakers or other large market teams we have far less options on that front.

That is a lot of luxury taxes that the GSW have agreed to pay. Reportedly it was $170 million in 2021 alone.

Hypothetically if we were to trade Dame and Nurkic and receive say Pat Williams, Ayton and 2 future 1sts... would that be something you guys would go for? I would assume Dame goes to Chicago and other pieces got to PHX along side Nurkic ..maybe it's a 4 teamer with say Crowder moving out along with Ayton for some win now pieces to Pheonix. No definite frame work in mind but acquiring those 2 guys with only Dame/Nurkic going out (maybe CP3 ends up in CHI???) and and very little draft capital coming back would that be an acceptable outcome?
Ant/GP2/Maledon
Sharpe/Keon/GP2
P.Williams/Grant/Walker/Brown
Grant/P.Williams/Watford/Brown
Ayton/Favors/Sarr/Eubanks
I would be fine rolling with that and sorting out the rest over the next year. Winslow goes to Boston for some draft capital and Hart goes to another team out east wanting to push for a run... let's say 1 first and 2 seconds for those 2. That's 3 future (likely late) 1sts and 2 (let's go Mike Schmidt!)2nds along with 2 long term starters. We keep Grant to be our one veteran in the starting five while we piece together a competitive bench. So GP2/Keon Walker/Nas/Watford/Brown and Eubanks/Sarr as our bench. Sign Maledon/Favors to finish our pseudo tank commanders with upside. Could be Zeller instead of Favors if that's what the front office wants... lots of random ideas in a single post, but I think you get the general idea... is Joe a good enough GM to negotiate all that? Probably not...but overall doesn't feel that far fetched Ant+Sharpe+P.will+Ayton as our future building blocks with an aggressive switch heavy YOUNG bench.

Well Ben Simmons has looked pretty damn bad this season so far, so those that were super eager to send Dame to Philly for Ben looks like it would have not been the best.
Now sure he might turn it around but it appears he has some mental issues that is affecting his game in general.

thankfully it is, at least for the time being. Dame is looking good as ever. I'm not convinced that the team is all that great but adding GP to the mix should be really positivewco81 wrote:Thread is moot now.

what might intrigue me is a Simmons for Simons/filler trade, our D would be outstanding and we'd still have enough offense. Simons can be traded in January?

Stunned anyone would still want Ben Simmons. Nets should be the ones adding filler and maybe picks for the Blazers taking him on.

It always was lol. Dame cannot be traded until July 2023 no matter how much we faltered.

there is that
I know that a lot of this 'trade-Dame' stuff was based upon the assumption that Dame/Ant was going to be the same as Dame/CJ. Too much assumption there, IMO. Simons isn't the same player as CJ. For one thing, Simons appears to be bigger than CJ; taller. And he has a longer wingspan. More importantly, Simons doesn't play the same style as CJ. He doesn't pound the air out of the ball over and over like CJ did. Ant makes quicker decisions and attacks without over-dribbling, for the most part
more than that though is that Dame/CJ never really had a GM that wasn't the ego-blind Olshey; never really had a coach that wasn't Stotts; and never had a forward combo like Grant/Hart (so far, Hart has been a revelation this season)
Dame/CJ got 7 years to prove Olshey correct. Might want to give Dame/Ant at least one season to prove Cronin correct
besides all that, the extension Dame signed pretty much guaranteed he'd be a Blazer till at least 2025 when the NBA signs new media rights deals. I'm pretty sure Dame will retire a Blazer
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
