I think it's great the GWill is betting on himself.

So the positive to me today is that guys like Hunter or Johnson didn't get extensions, because barring injury they're going to be way more sought after than Grant. But disappointed we couldn't get something done today.

Well...let's try this again:

Cam Johnson
Grant Williams
PJ Washington
Matisse Thybulle
Coby White
Rui Hachimura
Jaxson Hayes
Darius Bazley
Cam Reddish

Some other UFAs I can think of are Harrison Barnes and Kuzma

Grant and his agent must've been looking for a big figure, thinking they can get it elsewhere in the summer. Always rooting for the non-douche players to get paid. Just hoping Grant doesn't go outside of his role and capabilities trying to "prove himself" in a contract year.

I don't know what they were expecting for a ballpark figure, but this guy's ceiling is way too low to commit long-term big money. Role-playing bench player (8-9th man) is his upside, and he just doesn't have the athleticism to move beyond that. If he's a starter you're a bad team.

This is going to turn into a big mistake for the C's.
Should have locked Grant up. He'll likely be out of our range, next season.

I like Grant quite a bit .... but I don't know if he's a player who's going to get much better then he is currently...

That said the cap is going up 10 million next year and we'll be over the cap, so locking him up now is at a discount at current rates.

Hence everyone getting locked up now by dumb agents and smart franchises.

Good for Grant's agent, sad for Celtics franchise.

There's going to be 7 franchises with over 50 million in projected cap space next year, and Grant is going to be viewed as a 3 and D character guy you can plug into a "Jae Crowder/PJ Tucker" role in your starting lineup.

With no one to spend money on and endless money to spend it looks like a prime offseason for guys to get way overpaid.

I also like Grant, especially at his current pay rate. We dont know what hes looking for, but im not sure i like Grant for more than 12 mil per year and i have to assume he was offered that.

To be fair, don’t think Crowder or Tucker have ever signed for more than the MLE.

I think its fine that Grant will be a RFA. He bet on himself and the C's are in a wait and see mode. Can he do it again? If so, he'll get his money. Grant is a 7-9 player off the bench for this team and should get paid for that and if Brad is doing his job, no more.

I have zero worries Grant will do anything other than what he is supposed to. His team play is part of what makes him valuable.

Hmm. PJ Tucker and Jae Crowder have been starters on some of the best teams in the league (2021 Bucks, 2021 Suns, 2018 Rockets, 2020 Heat, 2022 Heat, 2022 Suns, etc.) Grant is only 23 and already just as good as those guys (if not better, in some areas of the game) and is less of a headcase than them.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

That's the first time I've heard somebody say denying a smaller contract would dilute the potential value of those in similar roles as him.

He's a pretty sharp guy so I buy it. Either way, no urgency to extend early but they'll have to match whatever RFA offer he gets.

It's the same game we played with Marcus and it worked out okay for all parties.
