4TH Q: SPURS 137 PACERS 134

The Good: We had FOUR 30+ point Qs, SEVENTY in the first half, sixty-seven in the second.

We had six Spurs in double figures and everyone who played scored. We were led by comeback gamer vet JRich who poured in a career-tying 27 on stellar 8-13, 6-8 from 3, and clutch 5-5FTs. He was making the 'call me' gesture, and you have to think that the calls will indeed be calling in for him from teams in need of just such two-way play.

Collins had a resurgent two-way game as well, with an efficient 5-8, 1-1 from 3 (basically our lone big who made them pay with his floor stretching), 4 boards, 3 assists (nice feature from our bigs), a steal, and team high 3 blocks. You can see the versatility just breaking through.

Primo didn't stand out on O, only 1-2, 0-1 from 3, 1-2FTs, but wait WAIT! In 21 minutes he led the team with seven assists, got 4 boards (2 on O) and a steal for a team-high tie with Keldon of +14.

Diop and Doug combined to chip in 7 points.

From the starters, Devin also had a serugent game, tied with Keldon for a starter-high 23 points on crisp 7-15, 4-7 from 3, 5-6FTs, all MUCH better than in the first game. Love his D activity, and that he contributed across the board: 4 rebounds, 4 assists (this stands out for him), and 2 steals. I love that he's getting much better at getting to his spots on th floor and has a textbook J. I also really like that he's driving more. If there's one thing to improve it's creativity at the rim. He lacks (or has so far not shown) certain flair movements in the air to bypass defender hands at the rim. He just straight line drives and goes forward. It's an improvement, but things like tear drops, high off the glass baby Js, and those crafty moves that Primo and Keldon are capable of.

Keldon welcomed back 3s, too! 8-15, with 4-9 from 3, 3-4FTs. Two things I most liked about his game this season are the two things he's doing consistently whether or not his shot is falling: he's passing far more attentively, willingly, and capably, and he's defending much better. Quick feet and hustle to take the angle away and body his man while keeping him in front, hands up, contesting shots. He had 3 boards, a steal, and LED the starters with 6 assists as well as +14.

Tre's making it hard for Primo to take over right now, and good for him for improving his game. Another night, another made 3, more confident drives, finishes at the rim, and floaters, and running the point with more confidence and acuity. 6-12, 1-3 from 3, and great to see the 5-6FTs as well, including a clutch pair late in the game to put us ahead by 3. Four boards (1 on O), 4 assists, 2 steals made for a good all around growing game.

Speaking of FTs - Jakob led us in both attempts -- 21! and makes -- 13! because they employed hack-a-Jak in the final what? three? four or so minutes. Felt like half a quarter. What a way to extend the **** game. Uuugh.

Pop wasn't going to rescue him and said after the game that Jakob would be kept in the game no matter what. Better to get him used to it now.

And thanks to those FTs along with his 4-6FGs Jakob had 21 points, team-high 8 boards (2 on O), THIRD on the team with 5 assists, a steal and a block. I like that he's taking his own shot off the dribble more when he has the ball just outside the key, that he's looking to post up more, too. He was more physical and ever mobile tonight.

That leaves us with rookie Jeremy. Only 2-4, 0-1 from 3, with 5 boards (1 on O). He rotated well, disrupted shots, pushed it in transition but gave the ball up at the right time, too. He's playing within himself and at some point when he gets more comfortable you hope he stretches himself a bit more. I liked his fake and drive for an off the glass layup to get our scoring started. Good 5-4 connection.

With our front court not producing 3s it puts more pressure on the rest of the starters to shoot them and it's easier for defenses to game plan. But Tre's done a good job in keeping opponents honest with taking and making them more, and finding team mates as well.

It does help that pretty much everyone else on the team is capable of taking and making one and everyone except for Jakob and Diop (who is comfortable with the 3, but didn't get a chance to shoot it in his 8 minutes) attempted one. We finished the game with a scorching 17-31.

Thirty-four assists. Spurs Way alive and well with this burgeoning group.

The Bad: excellent shooting from 3, but none made in the 4TH Q on only two attempts. So we got outscored 12-0 from 3 in the final Q.

They picked up the pace and forced a lot of TOs; we finished with 17(!), TEN of which were in the 4TH Q.

They also walloped us 70-42 in points in the paint, and doubled us with 14-7 O boards.

The Ugly: We gave up a FORTY-NINE point Q resulting in allowing seventy-nine points in the second half.

They had 104FGAs to our 81, including five more attempted 3s.

Looking at the final Q it's a minor miracle we pulled through a win, but thank goodness we did, truly, as a 21-point lead dwindling would have been tough to mentally overcome, and after getting thumped in the first game, as Devin said, it's better to learn the lessons from a win.

It was a good lesson, particularly in handling full court press late in games, in facing hack-a-Jak, in dealing with a hungry team pushing at us with pace and inside points.

Coming into the 4TH Q, we were 9-15FTs and finished 32-44  We scored 10 more points from the line because of all the opportunities. Our 4TH Q of 23-29FTs was more than our opponent's entire game output of 21-22.

Such weird stats all around in this game, particularly the inflated ones in the final Q.

This was the first of a back-to-back and Pop tightened the rotation. Tre (35 minutes), Devin (34) and Keldon (33) were the only Spurs reaching the 30+ playing time mark, with Jakob (29) and JRich (28) next, and the rest in the mid to low teens. Blake and Mal did not play once again (though I suspect they'll get time tomorrow) and neither did Romeo and Dieng (same).

We want to win, and do things like play certain players more or less, play the hot hand (JRich, for instance) but also focus on development with Jeremy late in the game in for Jakob, with Jakob in the game for all the FTs, with us getting squeezed in full court pressure and not helping trapped Tre enough.

We'll have plenty of games to learn bitter lessons from. I'm glad we get some positivity from this game and we rewarded ourselves with sticking through a tough late challenge. I'm glad that the vets stepped up and got some eyes on them. I'm glad we're bonding:

HIGHLIGHTS

Much quicker shot release, too, in addition to off-ball movement and getting to his spots:
