How I see it as well for the 1st and 2nd teams.
Concerns -
1. the health of Bogi's knee and JJ (his knee health too) as JC's primary backup (wished we had seen him play last season).
2. Will Nate run an all bench lineup? I hope not - would like to see JC/OO and JJ/Cap rotations.

Actually seeing that roster laid out...we have a slightly above average team. :nonono:

We'll need some expert coaching to jump into the top-4 this season.

Another guy I would have liked to have brought in this offseason for big man depth, and an addition of toughness.

Hawks' Toughest Starting Lineup Decision

Clint Capela or Onyeka Okongwu

Image

It's probably safe to pencil Clint Capela in as the Atlanta Hawks starting center. He's had that role in 136 of his 137 appearances for the team.

But there's at least an argument for 21-year-old Onyeka Okongwu.

He's smaller and doesn't have anywhere near the experience as a roll-man that Capela has, but Okongwu would make Atlanta's starting defense far more switchable.

Getting him more reps with starting guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray could pay off in the long run, too.

At 28, Capela certainly isn't old, but it's easy to see Okongwu as the future of the position.

Holy smokes, CC is already 28. I was thinking more like 26... It make sense to trade him sooner rather than later.

I'm a bit surprised WE didn't pursue Blake to replace Gallinari as the backup PF and veteran scorer off the bench.

Are you really surprised though?? That they'd again push JJ down the depth chart?
My guess is after the Gallo trade, they saw enough of JJ during the offseason to have him be the backup?

I suppose, but it's unusual for a team that has real title aspirations to have no proven backups at a position.

If Collins were to miss significant time again this season, we'd be depending on a player with 0 starts...and/or Frank Kaminsky to man the PF spot?

(One of Carmelo, Millsap or LaMarcus Aldridge could make a great insurance policy at PF and serve as locker room presence.)

My overall impression of Trav's offseason moves:

we improved the defense and the starting five while weakening our bench and moving two of our best shooters.

Grading Every NBA Team's Top Offseason Pickup

Atlanta Hawks

Image

Top Offseason Pickups: Dejounte Murray, Justin Holiday, AJ Griffin

Murray looks as advertised for the Atlanta Hawks thus far, playing a secondary offensive role to Trae Young while still getting to flex his playmaking muscle and elite defensive abilities.

Through seven games, Murray is putting up 20.0 points, 7.6 assists, 6.1 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game with a sparkling swing rating of plus-22.5. Atlanta is off to a 4-3 start and no longer collapses offensively when Young needs a breather.

Holiday was brought over in the Kevin Huerter trade to be a multi-positional defender and shot-maker off the bench. Only half of that is true thus far, however, as the 33-year-old has connected on just nine of his 29 three-point attempts (31.0 percent) to begin the season.

Griffin, the No. 16 overall pick out of Duke, has only played in four games thus far. In 32 minutes, he's racked up 20 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three.

Grade: A-
