He could be, but time will tell as he's still young in his career.

If he continues his current play, we might be talking about him more then just as a shooter. 25/5/5 on 47% from 3 is insane.

Still wondering when Klay officially became #2 lol.

There are a lot of guys who can be argued in front of Klay, way too many to make the 2nd claim.

Bane has WAY too long to go before he's in the convo.

Dame should be in the conversation. The majority of his 3s have been self creating as the primary focus of defenses. He's got the second best range of all time, that's not even debatable.

Guys like Klay, bane, Ray and Reggie are spot up shooters for the most part. Have to factor that in. Didn't Klay score like 60 off 11 dribbles once? If Dame played in Kerr's offense I don't think there would be much debate.

Bane is not just a spot-up shooter anymore. He's vastly improved his ball handling and creation skills the last 2 seasons.

Shooting is a more diverse skillset than just 3’s and FT’s.

Carry on.

Bane has one of the shortest wingspans in the NBA with very short/muscle arms scouts just didn't like that.Plus he was 23 which for some reason teams don't like.

The Grizzlies clearly didn't care since they drafted someone similar the year before in Brandon Clarke who also fell in the draft.

Gotcha. I would argue he is a current NBA All Star and still playing. Carry on.

Not sure but he's really interesting player and there wasn't much dropoff when Morant got injured in the playoffs vs the Warriors, and Bane became the featured scorer

And I agree he's the second best Grizz, not JJJ

He is certainly off to a good start in his first 151 games of his career But I'm going to need to see another decade of it, to even think about placing him number 2.

Two threads are fine, but that's the limit on Demond Bane, ok vampirate?

If you are already projecting him to be 2nd. Might as well reach to the first.

I think we are a bit early in this Bane speculation, lol... but I did think Bane was criminally underrated after facing him in the playoffs last season.

Bane is insane, he's a career 43% 3 point shooter and a career 88% FT shooter.

He's like a super powered version of Seth curry.

When I watch highlights of him he can get separation and when he launches it, I just have this absolute confidence it's going in. What's telling is that even in the playoffs, his shooting percentages have not gone down one bit.

Fwiw, this is not a thread saying Desmond will go down, it's more of a thread asking do you think he can.

As for Klay, he's the prototypical elite shooter so i'm using him. There are players that can get their shot off easier, or create (Lilard for example) but Klay is the guy I think of that before the injuries had the right mix of volume and efficiency as a shooter over his career. I think Klay deserves to be considered top 5, where in the top 5 is the better question.

As for whose really the 2nd best shooter it's quite the debate. One could say Ray Allen but he's had his truly great and not so great seasons as a shooter. Same with Reggie Miller. Then of course there's Kyrie and KD who haven't had ridiculous seasons shooting, have also been consistent. So outside Steph being the obvious #1, who is really #2 is an interesting debate.

Steve Nash is 2 and probably could have been 1 in a different era.

TIme will tell, but I think it is within the realm of possibility, and he's certainly started his career the way someone who ends up in the top 5 shooters of all time would. This article was published during the playoffs last year:

There are 156 instances when a player launched more than 500 threes in a season. Bane’s second year was the 10th most accurate. Six of the nine that top it came from Steph Curry or Klay Thompson.

There are 210 players who’ve ever averaged three or more threes per game in their first two seasons. Bane’s 43.5% shooting ranks fifth. (Bane has taken 794 threes; in the first two seasons of Klay’s career, he also attempted 794 threes and made 40.6% of them.)

Bane’s 46.1% three-point percentage ranks first out of the 51 players who have taken at least 50 threes in the playoffs during the first two years of their careers.

There are 392 examples of a player launching at least six threes per game; only 12 have ever been more accurate than Bane was in 2021–22. None were as young.

This season he should be an All Star, I can see him and Ja making multiple All Star teams together for quite a few years.

I mean cmon, he's putting up 25 points 5 assists 5 rebounds on 18 shots a game, what more could you ask for. JJJ gets all the hype (he's good too don't get me wrong). I view Desmond Bane as the 2nd guy in Memphis' young core though.

I had him all star last season. Dudes great.

As for Klay, all the adulation seems unfair when you consider the context. Just Dray “toad” Green has been exposed as being artificially propped by the system, so too has Klay. When you account for Klay’s limited mobility and overall inability to generate his own shot it’s unfair to call him 2nd. It may not even be close

Limited mobility? He spent his best years guarding point guards. He doesn't have a great handle on offense [at least I think, I'm not sure I've ever seen him dribble], but he can definitely move.

The thing about Klay for me is how effective he is even when he has 2 players in his face. He gets his shot up in tight quarters as well as anybody I've seen when he's in the zone. And he's had a lot memorable games when he was in the zone dropping bombs.

He is really good. And unique compared to a lot of players in the league with his combination of relatively tiny wingspan and huge biceps.

He surprised the hell out of me the first time I saw him play, but 2nd best shooter ever? I don't know, maybe. It depends if his career goes more Reddick/Seth or Dame/Steph. I find the former more likely, so I'm gonna say no.

Overall I think he's much more dynamic then Seth/Reddick as he's great in the catch and shoot , off screens and iso/pull ups.

It's only a matter of time before people get with it and realise how special he is
