According to basketball reference, he had the 2nd best on/off numbers on the team behind only Harrell (and Gill, if you count his sub-500 minute season).

Ok I was wrong. Then yes, maybe he can grow into a starter at 2-guard. Take Brad's job.

In his first appearance of the season, Corey Kispert played 19 minutes against the Hornets last night. He went 3-4 from the field & 1-1 from the FT line for a gaudy TS% of .901. Picked up 3 defensive rebounds as well.

On the negative side, he committed 4 fouls in that relatively brief stretch, & he turned the ball over once.

A pretty good outing overall, I'd say -- with the notable exception of the fouls.

He looked bigger than I remember from last year. He looked almost as big as Avdija.

The Hornet’s game was Corey’s third game of the season not his first. His 3 ball has been off but I expect that to change…the Zards desperately need Kispert’s 3 ball shooting.

The team is 3-1 with Kispert as a starter. And the one loss was a 6-point loss to Mempis on the road.

During those 4-games as a starter, Kispert is averaging 15 points per 36 minutes on a TS% of .861

I made a doubleganger comparison to of Kispert to JJ Reddick in a game thread recently.

Wondering how others felt about that.

I think it's selling Corey short. He's much bigger than JJ, and a much more versatile defender as a result.

I'm getting excited about Corey. With the injury in Japan, and missing the pre-season he became kind of an afterthought. We were all focused on how Rui and Deni were looking, and the new guys from Denver, and precisely how bad Johnny D is at basketball. But now Corey is back and in the flow, and holy crap! He looks awesome! 70% TS! He holds his own on defense, continues to make great cuts, and his jumper looks locked in. I even saw him put the ball on the floor a little bit against the Grizz to get an open mid range jumper. If he can add some dribble drives to his game ... well I don't know... just how good can this kid get?

I like Kyle and Rui, but I'm starting to wonder, do we really need either of them in the long run? If what we want is a third option on offense, why not just start featuring Corey more? Is it crazy to think he can be our version of Desmond Bane?

Reddick had decent size for a 2 guard. Corey is a little short for a NBA 3 (historical size)
but there's a lot of diversity in size @ 3 across the league. He's bigger than KCP who did fine there.

Kispert's got good size for an NBA 2.

It certainly wouldn't fit the narrative among many that TS can't draft his ass out of the driveway.

To answer your question though, I think Kispert can be a very valuable player on a very good team. His defense is much better than was advertised, and he does a lot of other things outside of shooting threes. He seems to have a great head on his shoulders, and seems to react to adversity in the way you'd want, which is to say he's even-keeled. He's looking like a steal pick to where he was chosen, just hope he can continue to add wrinkles to his game.

Where would Kispert go in a redraft?

I saw this article on CBS Sports (before the season so I think Kispert goes higher, especially ahead of Primo... ) https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/redrafting-the-2021-nba-draft-rockets-pick-evan-mobley-at-no-2-jalen-green-slips-to-magic-at-no-5/

I think Kispert will be every bit as good as Klay Thompson, just won’t have the benefit of playing with Curry&Green for his entire career.

Intelligent and physically capable defender, and elite off ball scorer. Very good player on a great team.

Minus the elite perimeter defense of prime Klay.

Why not? Let's get irrationally excited about somebody on our roster for a little bit before reality cruelly crushes our dreams (again).

Thompson age 22 season per36: 16.7 points 3.8 rebounds 2.2 assists 1.1 steals 1.9 turnovers 53% TS

Kispert age 22 season per36: 12.7 points 4.2 rebounds 1.7 assists 0.7 steals 1.0 turnovers 58.6% TS

Similar players. People have always compared Kispert to the JJ Reddick/Joe Harris types, but he’s far more like a Klay Thompson type. Much better athlete than he gets credit for in terms of strength and lateral quickness/ability to play around the rim. Also has elite basketball IQ and unselfishness as opposed to just above average in those areas.

Kispert was a much better prospect coming out of college than Thompson, and even still, he never got nearly enough credit for posting 23.4 points per40 on a ridiculous 67.4% TS. Those are elite scorer numbers, not just a stand in the corner floor spacer.

I really like Kispert, but I think the Klay Thompson comparison is a bit of a reach. Kispert looks like he won't be a sieve defensively, which is great. But it's still completely different from Thompson, who was Golden State's designated stopper for many years. Thompson was their first choice to guard guys like Harden, Lillard and Westbrook. I don't see the Wizards ever asking Kispert to guard the opposition's best ball handler.

On offense Kispert is probably a bit better as a cutter and slasher, but Klay Thompson has a much higher release point, allowing him to get his 3-point shot off with much less space. As a result, Klay was putting up 8-9 3PA's per 36 in his prime on about 42% shooting (and is actually putting up about 12 3PA's per 36 now). Kispert is averaging 6.3 3PAs/36 for his career so far. I don't really think that's going to increase much unless he changes his release point.

I really think Wally Szczerbiak is the most apt comparison. Like Szczerkiak, Kispert is more than just a one-dimensional shooter. He is a crafty cutter and finisher around the basket. But neither guy is going to do much off the bounce.

Szczerbiak made one All Star team.
