We run it down, we block their final attempt. This is the full game, full team effort!

Bucks fan, I come in peace. I was at the game. I just want to ask, what was the deal with Keldon Johnson? Did we talk trash about him leading up to the game? What is his beef with us? Dude was getting way jacked up for beating us without our 3 best players and the going nuts after the breakaway dunk when the game was clearly over was a little weird.

Anyways, it was my first time at AT&T. Enjoyed the experience. Cool vibe and y’all have a great passionate fan base.

He's like that ALL. THE. TIME. He goes to 11 because... it's just how he's wired - on court, during practices. Also, he had an inefficient game prior to this one. Also, we were on a five-game losing streak we just broke out of, so it all came together and felt nice.

His middle name, no joke, is Wilder.

Nothing personal at all.

Appreciate it! Glad you had a nice time at the AT&T Center.

GG!

That makes sense now. I didn’t realize the five game losing streak. The way you explained it makes total sense. Kind of a releasing of pressure if you will.

Being impressed with the vibe when you guys are a 5-7 and rebuilding, I gotta know, how insanely raucous did it get in there during the championship runs? Y’all must’ve blown the roof off that place back in 2014 playing the big 3 Heat.

For sure. But he's like that during winning streaks, too lol We joke around that Keldon leads the league in AAAAAGH! yells. Just because. He releases a lot. And we love him for it.

Yeah it's great to see that the fans are supporting the team in a rebuild year. It's not the attendance of yesteryear but fans appreciate the effort.

I WISH I could have experienced it back in 2014 and prior. I live in Canada and for reasons too long to get into, wasn't able to come to San Antonio to see games then. But for sure you could feel the intensity and volume even through watching on TV. Incredible. Unforgettable. And you now know how rabid fans get when a championship is on the line.

Best of luck this season. Other than Grayson lol, you have team full of nice guys to root for.

If you're visiting, enjoy your time in SA!

4TH Q: SPURS 111 BUCKS 93

Great two-way, full-48, full-team win!

It's late.

More tomorrow!

-------

Well I had a feeling we'd get back on the winning track, and if it took a depleted opponent to get one, fine. Nobody discounted their wins against us when we were missing key players.

For us though, this season more than ever, it's about how we win, not just wins for their own sake.

With that in mind, limiting TOs, protecting the rim and arc, as well as scoring transition points from a team-first, movement oriented O were our areas of improvement.

We had 19 TOs, so that’s best described as a work in progress, but in the context of the game, we had one stretch where we had five in a row, and the 19 cost us 24 points, just one more than our opponent. So while it was still more than what we want, and still more than our second worst in the league 17.1, we just about broke even. We didn't lose here, but we can do better in gaining a bigger points advantage. With more reps together and team chemistry building, we should be able to get these down to more respectable levels. Teams compete to get back in games, and it's that pressure that we're learning to deal with. Also, learning to handle the pressure of close games factors in.

Rebounding was close, too, with a 50-48 edge for us, but we got badly outmatched 21-9 on O boards. We did face a team that leads the league in rebounds and is third in O boards. We rank 22nd in total rebounds at 41.9 and 13th in O boards at 10.8 per game. Newest revelation, Bassey, led us with 14 boards, tied Jakob for team best with 3 on O, who himself led the starters with 10 boards. Sochan grabbed 7, with every other Spur getting 5 or fewer. Thanks to our Cs and effort of the rest of the team, we had a balanced output of starters getting 29 and bench 21. Still, we need to do a better job with limiting O boards and second chances. We rank tied for 21st in O boards allowed with 11.5 and even versus a team missing three starters we gave up almost twice our average. Positioning, boxing out, even basic coming to the ball instead of letting it drop will help. But I also loved the effort of falling on the floor to fight for ball possessions on 50/50 plays.

We attempted slightly fewer than our per game average of 3s while our opponent took slightly more than theirs; both teams made 12, below our made average, but slightly above our efficiency average. Keldon led us with 5-8 from the arc on his way to a spirited team high 29 on 9-17 (tied for game high with Devin in attempts and makes), and team high 6-6FTs. He started slow but built to have an impactful two-way game, contributing 2 boards, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Keldon also had a team high 4 TOs after 3 the previous game and 6 the game before that. He does have a bigger role, bigger usage, and is doing more overall. The handles need some work but it feels almost micro-nitpicking when he's been our leader and changing our energy so well game in and game out. He keeps finding ways to contribute to winning plays. Mistakes will happen along the way, it's just a matter of fighting through them. Keldon does it well.

Sochan missed his two arc attempts, something we live with in a 19-year-old rookie whose impressive defense alone keeps him in the starting group. He’s very energetic and enthusiastic, and with his inexperience, he tends to jump for pump fakes. Staying on his feet is one of the next steps in his development.

Tre made his lone 3 attempt, and though he’s made noticeable strides in spreading the floor, especially from the corner, so much so that he’s already surpassed his entire output from last season, he doesn’t take enough yet to make it as big of a difference. Still, Tre’s overall scoring, including a reliable floater, in addition to his steady distribution and stingy defense is a welcome improvement. He led us with 9 assists, got 5 boards, along with 1 steal, and 1 block.

Devin struggled with efficiency from the arc (2-7), but worked his way to 9-17 and 2-2FTs for 22 points, grabbing 5 boards along the way. He is more assertive in calling for screens to run plays for himself or initiate them as lead ball handler. He’s better at recognizing opportunities and getting to his spots.

Doug did Doug things making 2-3 from 3 but we needed to get him more chances. He moved well throughout the game but he was well shadowed defensively, too. And so when one sharpshooter was contested, another had more chances. Turns out, however, that Jrich chucked his way to 1-6, sometimes taking ill-advised 3s when other options were available had we moved the ball. It’s one of those situations where if he makes it, great, if he doesn’t you criticize the shot selection that disrupted the flow of our O. In terms of development, we need guys to recognize and prioritize the hot hand rather than continue a shooting slump. Make the better play.

Back to revelation, Bassey. He not only grabbed 14 boards, he also led the bench with 4 assists (second only to Tre!), tied Jakob for team high 4 blocks, made 2-3 shots including 1-2 from 3 for 5 points – in 18 minutes. He plays with energy, BBIQ, and like a guy who is intent on ever going back to Austin again. If it weren’t for Zach’s injury we likely wouldn’t have picked Bassey up. It’s an incredibly good fortune that came from an unfortunate circumstance. We were due for some.

In terms of pushing the ball, we had a 21-0 fast break points advantage, and with more drives, we won the points in the paint 50-32. Defensively, a 13-5 blocks advantage showed our solid rim protection.

An overall solid, team-wide, two-way effort and output. When one aspect wasn’t working, we found another on O and throughout, our D kept us in it. Resilience, finding ways to play through scoring lulls, and figuring out how to pull away and finish the game were good development markers for our young, growing team.
