'Tis the season. It's that time that rolls around every 4 years - The World Cup.
There are the favorites to win it all - Brazil, France, Argentina , Spain, England, and even Germany could come out winners. Some of these teams will have a hard time getting out of their group stage games. The USA has a reasonable chance to get out of the group, but they do not have a good enough team to win it all, IMO. My dark horse team...Uruguay.

I have Argentina winning it all.
Cups always have strange results and unpredictable teams advancing out of the group stage when they aren’t held in traditional locations in Europe or South America.
I could see teams like Senegal, Iran and Japan advancing.
I see Denmark as this year’s sleeper team.

I oppose nationalism and so I guess I’ll root for Iran too. I think I was rooting for Cameroon last time.

First goal by Ecuador at 4mins in, and they call it back. I have to say they got it wrong. I can’t see how it’s off sides.

Mendy fell off.. I thought he was one of the best goal keepers in the world. But he's sucked in club play this season too.

Senegal played an otherwise good game. It was a good game-plan. They may still make it out of the group.

Let’s go USA!
I am happy with our starting lineup, although wish we had stronger players at certain spots, namely striker.

Ridiculous letdown for the USA! They left points on the table. The game plan after the half was not the best. The substitutions, aside from Aaronson, were not the best. It seems like the USA team let off the gas, content with a 1-0 lead, till Wales scored. Now the road to get out of the bracket becomes harder.

Costly draw. That was just a stupid, stupid foul that got Bale the penalty, you just can't make mistakes like that and hope advance in this tournament.
Now they have to hope for a miracle against England, who if wins against the US, is into the next round and may rest players against Wales or settle for a draw. Wales schedule is a pretty big advantage, given that they get England last in the group.
Of course it this is all with the assumption that Wales beats Iran given their destruction today

Re: 2022 World Cup discussion for diehards, fair weather, and seasonal soccer fans
Really bad subbing by Berhalter. Any one of those subs was defensible, but not all of them. I could see Wright in with a lead so that he could mark one of Wales’ huge strikers on set pieces.
I could see Yedlin in as he is a better 1v1 defender than Dest. I could see Morris in as a late game, kill the game sub to press and maybe draw a foul or two in the attacking 3rd.
Acosta made some sense to give some buzz and bite in the midfield.
But all of them together left us with a team without a prayer of holding the ball, much less score.
Where in the world was Gio?
And Aaronson is more wing than midfielder.
Subs should have been Aaronson for Weah. Acosta for McKinnie. Gio for Seargeant or Pulisic. Delatorre for Musah and Yedlin for Dest.

Re: 2022 World Cup discussion for diehards, fair weather, and seasonal soccer fans
agree that the substitutions were simply silly, minus Aaronson. We should expect more from Berhalter. I dont know why Berhalter decided to hold the ball more in the 2nd half, instead of playing the same way as in the 1st half. Clearly, the first half was working out well, so why change? I often yell at Berhalter for not adjusting, but this was one place where he didnt need to adjust because the tactics were working just fine.
We are in a bit of a bind, because Wales will likely beat Iran. We will have a lot of work to do to win against England. If we dont win, we may as well just pack our bags and head back home.

Here come Messi and Argentina at 5am ET/2am PT. I'd like to be awake for this, but I need my sleep. Hopefully someone can write about it. It promises to be a high scoring (for Argentina) game. We will see...

And just like that, I eat my words! What a stunning upset. Argentina loose 2:1 to a very surprising Saudi Arabia. This will be talked about for years.
