RLo guarding Giannis is an interesting choice, but I know we are low on men. Maybe would want to see Diakite get some time.

Re: Game 19: Cavs @ Bucks 11/25/2022
Well the no-spacing lineups (Mobley, Allen, Okoro + Mitchell/Garland + Cedi/Wade) we've been throwing out have still been scoring.
A lot of it is that the defense is turning into easy offense, but also that when Jrue isn't out there, the bigs are dropping against Garland/Mitch and it's opening up shots.

Giannis is one of the guys that I don't hate that he gets a lot of foul shots, but sometimes it seems like the refs anticipate the foul and just whistle.
One possession, he ran right into RLo who was backing up and it was an and-one.

Giannis should've fouled out already, and has only been called for two fouls, but I like what I'm seeing. Wade on the floor really helps.

He's committed two obvious fouls in addition to that one. He almost yanked Wade's arm out of his socket and completely bodied Mobley in the air.

Re: Game 19: Cavs @ Bucks 11/25/2022
Jarrett was pulled with a hip injury, likely deflated the team - but why not play Diakite? ... Evan had a rough game.
I don't think we can analyze this team like we would LeISO. James was so methodical. The Bucks harassed us with aggressive perimeter D, packing the paint, and terrific rim protection ... but rather than run plays to get Wade shots and force the D to stretch we just keep doing Garland and Mitchell stuff.
Maybe Ricky will be disciplined enough to exploit a team that keeps cheating?
Regardless, the Bucks are tough ....

The Bucks defense was insane in the 3rd. As you said, we tried to make things happen for our smalls, but it just drained clock and we never got anything going. Some kind of decoy for Mitchell or Garland and I think we may have a little bit more success, but the Bucks still turned it on hard. Aggressive perimeter defense on two guards at the same time (a very odd situation where Caris was missed) and smothering paint defense.
Its on both the Cavs and the Bucks. Definitely didn't help that Allen went out with injury, but not the reason we lost.
I'll try not to say this for every loss, but a learning experience. They'll need to find ways to make a defense pay for aggressive perimeter defense on our guards.
They'll also need to find a better gameplan for Giannis. I think it looked good in the first half because its much easier (still not easy) to guard Giannis in the half court. Their defense in the second half lead to transition offense which is basically impossible to handle due to Giannis.

Yeah, the Bucks are tough, especially when Lopez can get away with playing illegal defense because both Garland and Mitchell are struggling from outside.
This was Wade's first night starting, Allen played all of 12 minutes, and the starters looked pretty gassed halfway through that 3rd quarter.
I think we get there with Wade on the floor. The Bucks really didn't help off him much tonight. We need more time, and a bit of luck on the injury front, to put it all together.

That was Wade's 5th start this season but yeah, point stands, starters need more time together.jbk1234 wrote:JonFromVA wrote:Jarrett was pulled with a hip injury, likely deflated the team - but why not play Diakite? ... Evan had a rough game.

I don’t see Allen missing much time, but we’ve been very unlucky with injuries so far this year. Then again, everyone has.
But as long as we don’t go on another five game losing streak, I won’t be too bothered by this one.

No one has ever accused Coach of being adaptable and willing to use his bench. He will always go deeper into the minutes than deeper into his bench.
They were riding thin tonight with Love, LeVert, Stevens joining Rubio as unavailable. Allen being the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Re: Game 19: Cavs @ Bucks 11/25/2022
In both games against Milwaukee this season Garland and the Cavs were good offensively in the 1st half and struggled in the 2nd. Part of their problem was Garland getting the ball and forcing his shot rather than moving the ball to the open man. Garland is good but not good enough to beat 5 defenders by himself. Determined to get his shot, Garland made it easy to defend the Cavs.
Playing over 34 minutes combined In the two 2nd halfs vs Milwaukee Garland scored a total of 11 points with 4 assists. In both 2nd halfs the Cavs were held to 39 points after scoring 61 in the 1st half.

I don't think we watched the same second half last night where the blame fell on Garland hunting for his own shots.
The play calls were made to get one of Garland or Mitchell the ball and the majority of the shotclock on our possessions were spent trying to get our pieces lined up so they could have the ball and make a play. This then lead to a lot of rushed shots due to low time on the clock, turnovers from trying to get the ball to these two, and a failure to ever get it to these guys.
Below is the video of every Cavs offensive possession in the 3rd.
Things that stood out to me on rewatching:
-Bucks guards (Jrue, Carter, and Matthews) were face guarding Garland/Mitchell when they did have the ball so it was difficult for them to touch the ball.
-This lead to our guards getting the ball near the half-court line with low amount of time to spare resulting in rushed shots and defenders crowding ignoring our non-shooters
-We actually had some okay looks that just do not go in (Mitchell 1st possession, Mobley's spin at the end of the clock, Cedi three from the top of the key)
-(Not pictured) defensively, we looked good in the half-court, but Bucks were making almost all the shots the Cavs would normally be okay with (Portis fade, Giannis three, Carter pull-up three, contested Jrue three, etc.)
-though RLo did score 40% of the 3rd quarter points, he was a visual massive downgrade from Allen's roll gravity. Neither defender cared about him on PNRs which made the guards go nowhere
