would you extend Alec Burks?

Post#1 » by coolness » Mon Nov 28, 2022 6:42 am

He obviously can play and it could be in his interest too in the same way Bojan's extension was.

And for how much? And what would that do to the team long-term? As in strategy for the rotation and for off-season moves.

What about Cojo and Noel? (I think continuity is always a plus and vets at pg and c are a big deal. Especially at pg.)

I wouldn’t be mad because he’s been pretty solid so far. If it’s possible to wait until the offseason, I’d wait to see how that plays out before making a commitment

Trade him at the deadline for best offer.

Everything depends on the offers that are received by him and by Bogdanovic. If they're not adequate, I'd certainly re-sign Burks for a couple more years, and current salary. He still has a team option for next year. He is being a very reliable veteran.

Why would we extend him? He have 2 years left on his deal. This thread is 1 year too early.

Detroit has a team option for next year. I'd look to trade him this year but only for a good return. I'd be completely happy picking up his option for next season. I don't extend him though.

Start him with Ivey until the TDL and hope a contender offers up something worthwhile.

He is a bit of a black hole on offense but perhaps part of that is the fact that he is playing with so many unproven guys off that bench. That said, whoever he plays for at the end of this season will likely pick up that option for next year if he keeps up his solid play.

He's a good player to have for the bench, he's made Detroit a competitive team, not sure if at this point in the teams development if that is good or not.

Not every vet has the same priorities Bojan does- no guarantee we could keep him.

Based on his play so far? Sure. He’s been a solid presence. Contingent on price and number of years of course, and I’m not sure how high I’d go.

And yes, he’s an FA after this year.

My understanding is that he is not a FA. The Pistons hold a $10 M option for next season that can be exercised after the season is over.

Extend him out past next year? Probably not. Pick up his team option for next year? Probably.

I like him - he keeps his cool when some of the other players get a bit hot headed (Diallo, for example). That being said, I think he'll be traded. There are other cool headed veteran guys still on the roster.

I still foresee him being traded to LAL with Noel and Bogdanovic in exchange for a future first round pick and Westbrook's salary.

Your understanding is correct. He is not a FA.

If we get a good pick/young player offered this deadline then we should take it. If not then pick up his team option as he is a good scorer off the bench and we may get a better offer this offseason.

I think Burks is a guy who looks better than he actually is because he's playing on a bad team and has been given more responsibility / opportunities than he really should be getting.

He wouldn't ever be asked to play point guard responsibilities on a good team. He's not very good at it here to be honest but we don't have another option really if Killian gets into foul trouble.

When he plays within himself he's a good spot-up shooter and can get to the foul line at times in a Saddiq-Bey-like fashion. But the same downsides apply as does with Saddiq: You really don't want them handling the ball a lot because of how turnover-prone they are / not making great decisions, etc.

TLDR: If some other team comes up to us and offers us young talent / picks for Burks then we should take it and run. He's not a long term piece for this franchise and his current warts will look much worse as the rest of our roster matures.

As far as the extension talk: We only extend if it can be done on the cheap.

One thing to remember about Burks, who is clearly a good player:

He’s been injury prone, missing large stretches of games. If he stays healthy until the TDL and we get a good offer, we should take it. His value can go to near zero at any time.

Does a reasonable extension make him more or less tradeable? What will teams give us for a half season rental? I’m not sure of those answers but Weaver should know. So we should do whatever improves his trade value since he isn’t a long term piece for us.

Exactly you dont ride these kinda players value to zero when your team sucks its pointless. Weaver collects those future picks so he can make those Weaver style draft day trades when the time comes.

He would never be a half season rental, only if the team acquiring him want him to be, which would increase his value. He have a team option on his contract, and that option will be picked, he is a good player and his salary is very reasonable.
