Worst 3 moves of recent years

1-Bulls getting Vuc (is Carter already better than him?, plus 2 picks)

2-Suns pass on Hali/dump JSmith early (other teams passed on Hali but was an OBVIOUS choice for PH)

3-Lakers trade for WB (could have had Caruso/DeRozan instead)

4-Minny gets Gobert (early, but so far looks bad)

5-GS picks Wiseman over Ball (nothing from Wiseman-Ball would be a great fit there)

6-Nets-JAllen/picks to Harden to Simmons (I wouldn't trade Harden for Allen straight up)

Worst Move of the Last Few Years

Post#1 » by pipfan » Tue Nov 29, 2022 5:04 pm

In general, I think GM's are getting better, but still lots of questionable moves over the last few years. Which of these are the worst of all-please vote for 3

I voted Bagley over Luka cause that might be the only instance where hindsight isn't 20/20. The draft is a crap shot but it was obvious Luka should have been the first pick by a mile.

Sixers trading Bridges for Z. Smith (no idea where that guy is now) still confuses me
Robert Horry is better than MJ, because everybody knows that 7>6.

I usually dont rank draft mistakes that high in terms of worst moves. We never know with much certainty before hand. Bagley over Luka was a bad pick at the time, but none of us knew Luka had the strongest legs of all-time in basketball lol. I had Luka #1 on my board, and Bagley #8, but even from that perspective... the draft is a crapshoot.

The really bad ones are the ones we knew were bad at the time. I voted for:
- Russ to the Lakers when the Lakers already didn't have shooting or defense (and they traded away more shooting and defense to get him) was always going to be a move that ruined the Lakers offense and defense. I wasn't sure how bad it would make them, but I knew it would make them worse.
- Giving up all that stuff for Vooch, to pair him with a poor defensive guard in Lavine... was a bad idea.
- I really didn't like the Nets going so star desperate and selling off every single piece of their young fun core. They didn't have to do that. I sort of understand it if there was Kyrie insight at the time.

Gobert could become a historically damaging move for the Wolves. But I was into the thought process of the trade at the time, and I'm still hoping they can figure some stuff out as the season goes on.

1) Sacto missing out on Luka Doncic
2) Lakers ending Lebron/AD's championship competitiveness by unloading assets for WB
3) T'wolves mortgaging their future for Gobert

Lakers destroying the championship team by giving away Kuz and KCP for Westbrook
Lakers giving the Clippers a future HOFer Ivica Zubats for a bag of cornflakes
Lakers not resigning Carushow
Lakers gave away THT for headcase Pat Bev
Jeanie B extending Robby P

The Westbrook trade isn't why Lakers lost Caruso. If Lakers pay Schroeder 80/4 (as reported) and he takes it then they would have been in same financial spot as they were when they decided not to pay Caruso more than 7m a season.

Lakers lost Caruso because FO didn't think he was that good or at least not worth more than 7m a year. Can't blame Russ for this. If anything you can blame the decision to pay THT and Nunn $15m

Only one of these involves losing out on a franchise player.

This one is easy as a Sixers, us. The list is long as the day is. We’ve made worst move blunders constantly which I don’t think any other org has done.

Starting from Fultz to Ben all the way to the Harris deal and Butler saga and even the little things that non Sixers fans will miss such as letting go Joe/Bassey and the wtf trade of Bridges. Having bum Monroe/Johnson as backups lol.

Overrating Thybulle’s value etc, drafting Smith and Springer it’s Groundhog Day each year

Signing Tucker will bite us as will Harden long term.

Embiid for all of his faults has covered up a ton from a bottom 5 FO for over a half a decade imo.

Bagley over Luka is the worst draft move

Gobert trade is the worst trade. If I was a Wolves fan I might consider stopping watching, it's a devastating move that has many years of impact gutting the Wolves in a few years for a team that isn't that good right now. But I also watched decades of Warrior futility so  -- at minimum if I was a Wolves fan I reccomend following a 2nd team to soften the annoyances, worked well for me.

It’s between Sacto and Philly. The Kings were resolute in their actions and really never planned or considered Luka, it seems. The Sixers blew the chance to rep a hometown hero who everyone could ball. I mean the dude won 2x at Nova and had a good say in those wins.

Gotta imagine the Sixers would/woulda been closer with him on the squad

I kinda go with others in that I find it hard to be too critical of draft choices. Still, Luka was so clearly the best talent there. That said, there was never a scenario where that westbrook deal made sense. A team in win now mode made the most obvious bad deal, unquestionably made their team worse, and got nothing back of any value in the deal. It was just unthinkable.

I think a more useful thread would be a comparison of moves at the time, without the benefit of hindsight. So take all the draft pick stuff out (aside from maybe the Luka one) because it's a crapshoot anyway. Even Bulls-Magic wasn't as bad as people think it is now with hindsight.

It's Vuc by a long shot.
Anyway why am I participating in this thread. Anyone who wouldn't trade Allen for Harden straight up just doesn't know basketball. Sorry.
I don't think any draft picks should be on the list. Draft picks are a crap shoot.

Easily the Gobert trade. It’s only rivaled by the Billy King Nets/Celtics as the worst trade ever.

The gobert trade was completely predictable and unforced. They were young and up and coming, they didn’t need to make a trade. Instead they went for a player on an albatross contract that he’s not anywhere near being worth,, that doesn’t fit their roster and whose skillet is a liability in the post season, and gave up a million picks for the “luxury” of adding him to the roster. It’s literally terrible anyway you look at it…and it was totally predictable at the time. Total disaster.

Dude, the Wolves gave up 4 picks and a swap. That's like half of what the Rockets got for Harden.
