No brainer deal for the Celts at those numbers but I also think Al was looking at it like Boston was the only place he wanted to play. I’m pumped. Let the good vibes keep rolling

yeah, significant extensions don't typically (ever?) happen in December -- this is what you do when you've already gotten PAID (twice, in fact) and are just about quality of life and security of knowing where you'll be going forward.
Eventually, Al's pending FA status would have become if not an issue or concern, but at least a question. Now: nipped before anyone probably ever got a chance to ask him or Brad about it. Great timing. Shows the buy-in to get this team to the promised land this season (and hopefully beyond).
Also: this well-timed extension may be a result of Al feeling he 'owed Boston one' for leaving us last time.

Good, Al will be here for the 3peat, cementing his spot in the HOF.

I'm just surprised it's so low. Historically, Al has prioritized the bag

If he can still pay at 38 years old, we could always give him one-year contacts after that. I have to think that he has zero desire to play for any other team at this point of his career.
And if he can no longer play, we can always resign him as a coach or something and his salary no longer counts towards the books. I'm sure we'll make sure to have his back.

This is great news for everyone involved and the fans. Hopefully he is a part of the Celtics until and after he retires.

Why would Big Al want to leave the Celtics given the team’s situation and the point he is at in his career?

Yeah it's time Al takes less and he knows that. The money was great for him signing in Philly, but as a player for him it was a **** disaster. His career wasn't in jeopardy when he got to OKC, but it was certainly at a low point.
With all we've done for him as a franchise, from his initial max deal, trading back for him when no one else wanted him at that money, giving him the full guarantee this year and playing on a championship contender, it's time Al takes less. With all we've done for him, it's time to reward the franchise back.

Big Al wants to win a championship. Boston is his best shot at getting that championship

That is a hell of a good deal, damn!!! I'm so happy right now for both us and Horford. I'm glad he's going to stick with us
He's been one of the most loveable Celtics' player for the past decade and he truly loves this franchise, he and his family. I'd love for him to stick around for even longer than that as a coach or as development mentor.

I mean, he left a Hawks team that just beat the Celtics in the playoffs. I may have my order of events wrong, but Al chose not to return to the Celtics even though they had just acquired Kemba.
Both times, it was over an extra couple mil per year

The Kemba thing happened right after he left. IIRC, he said he didn't know Kemba was coming.
Leaving the Celtics was a no-brainer considering the ridiculous truckload of money the Sixers were offering.

Re: Al Horford Extended!!!!
Hell yeah! The fact that Al was quick to sign an extension likes this tells me that he's got the heart of a Celtic. I love this guy, and I hope he retires with us.

This is correct. And I really don't blame him for leaving ASAP after that Kyrie fiasco, which involved other players as well. I'd be mentally drained and would want to leave after that situation too.

Re: Al Horford Extended!!!!
this is a hard question to answer now, but what *would* you have been willing to pay Al in FA? I was hoping for something like this (well above 'vet min'), but would have expected to be around $15 -- 18M per, depending on how the playoffs play out this year.
To put it another way, Al and Brad saved the Cs about 5 -- 8M imaginary "31to6 bucks" per year
If Al has another highly impactful playoff run like last season, maybe 10M

Good deal on paper. I think he's toast after this year though. I hope I'm wrong but I think this is the last year he can play major minutes.
I apologize for the things I have said in the past.

Re: Al Horford Extended!!!!
I would give Big Al a 3-year contract if he is okay with it. I don't think he will drop off much in the next few years.
Edit: Extend Mazzulla
