Agreed, this is what killed the Mavs against the Warriors and somehow became also RS problem this year.
Last year Mavs were below average rebounding team with Luka, and bad rebounding team without him, this year, they are bad rebounding team even with him, somehow, I really don't remember rebounding being an issue last year except for the 1st 2 games of the Jazz series and the Warriors series.

Mavs play the slowest pace in the league, raw numbers can be misleading.
Last year, Mavs were 8th best defensive rebounding team, and 7th worst offensive rebounding team.
This year, Mavs are 15th best defensive rebounding team (basically middle of the pack), and the worst offensive rebounding team.

I just looked at the last 10 games and we got outrebounded in 9 out of the 10 (most of it by 10-20 rebounds). That 1 time is against the Jokic and Gordon-less Nuggets where we actually showed up and did our business before somehow blowing it the following game.
This team is bad at rebounding. The only 2 good rebounders are Luka and Wood while the others are all below average for their position. Maxi in particular is a horrendous rebounder. Good shotblocker and defender but the guy just gets bullied out there on the boards.
The only way to make up for it is to have maximum effort and gang rebound like they did last season. But that kind of effort isn't sustainable long-term. At some point, you just need size, athleticism and rebounding skill. Much of those we lack with most of the roster.

It's a bad rebounding there are no 2 ways about it, but last year, they were decent defensive rebounding team because of:
1. effort
2. more rested Luka who is the team's best and most fundamentally sound rebounder.
Wood isn't a good rebounder, he leaps high and is long, but he doesn't box out.

I agree Wood doesn't box out well, is not fundamentally sound in rebounds and mostly uses his leaping ability and length to get rebounds but he still gets them and at a MUCH higher pace then anyone else on the team. I do think he often gets bullied by bigger Cs but that's because he's really a PF.

That is actually very good question, I wonder why Luka called for Maxi to set the screen

Because, for some reason, he was attacking Bagley all game and wanted to pull him away from the rim. Pistons didn't even guard Maxi, they often left him wide open but he's a terrible decision maker and it cost them.
Kidd should have been more vocal about this in TO's but we know he's not doing any coaching anyway. That out of bound play when DFS couldn't even get the ball into the game at the end sums it up .

Mavs moved from a team with great plays out of TO to the worst team at it

Haha yeah. I can't tell anymore how many times i pulled my hair out this season. And there are still 61 games left.

Even one of earlier plays when Kidd called TO and they needed an easy basket. It resulted in a tought contested step back 3 from Luka. I was like, WTF this is your TO play?? I can't believe what the hell is going on this year man.

Re: RS 22/23 - Mavs @ Pistons (Thurs, 7PM EST)
Luka defends (bad) like last years but puts better numbers,i don't think his defense is the problem.
I can accept some horrible defense games from him but not from 6points game guys who can't rebound, pass or dribble.
If we need him to averages 35-9-9 with good % AND play good defense for win against Detroit, Houston and others bad teams then we have a big big big problem.
DFS was horrible in those 20games, Maxi the same (he blocked some shots ok but nothing more), Bullock OMG, Powell is trash... They are basicallly the same kind of player, we have to many duplicates.
We said that from years.
THJ is a streaky shooters but at least, when he is hot, he can contributes in some way.
Wood is a baller, he can scores every possession.
And he averages more rebounds than DFS,Maxi,Powell,Bullock combinate.
Green earns to play 30+ minutes a game, he is young/athtletic and with some basketball skills.
After 20games Kidd didn't set yet the rotations and it's not help the players for sure.
He is a mediocre coach, and his history spoke, but this roster has big problems who he can't fix.
The chemistry is broken, we need new faces.
Obviously the first handicap is the lack of a 3rd ballhandler and that's ridicolous after last season.
Nico and Cuban screwed us with their stupidity.
The FO , and some fans, overestimate last POs... Some years you face the broken Jazz and the pussy Suns so you could make a run... Some years you face the Clips and it's a first round exit. That's it.

I wish Brunson was the same Brunson from last season vs LAC. Mavs could have easily advanced against them. Luka just needs his Pippen and it's game over.
Green is on the rise but needs minutes to get more comfortable and get experience. ANY great coach would recognize that and develop him. I joked after GSW game that Green won't even see 20 minutes vs Pistons and i was right

Even if Bullock did manage to have a somewhat solid game, there is still absolutely no reason to play him over young and better player like Green. It's not like Mavs are 20-0 right now and you wouldn't want to disrupt the chemistry.

Brunson can't play in the PO against long and athtletic wings. Clips had Kawhi,PG13, RoCo, Morris ecc ecc
People forget how good was that squad, a hell of a team.
They were contender and without Kawhi injuries probably they would have won the ring or at least made the Finals.

Next game is vs Knicks and we all know this is a scheduled loss. Then Suns who are on the rise and playing great, full team Denver this time, Bucks and i don't even trust them to win vs CHI or OKC right now.
So yeah. Buckle up it's going to be a bumpy ride.
If we can lose to HOU/DET, dont think you can convince me DAL can win any remaining game comfortably.

All true, but look how Brunson progressed last year. He drastically improved all the way through playoffs, so i do think even with how Kawhi was playing that Mavs would have won game 7.

So without any rotations or chemistry it's impossible to build a good team defense.
