we do have him on contract next year, I'm not ready to give him up entirely, but I don't expect anything to happen this season. I want him out of the rotation down the stretch

Yep seeing as though he's coming back from a fair bit of time out with injury I'm happy to shut him down for this year and see what he can do next year. Maybe an off-season training regime might raise his game.

I wish he'd play 10 seconds. Thor deserves all of his minutes.

Kai Jones and Thor, yeah. I probably wouldn't have even picked up the option if we're being serious about it. Kind of already got a McDaniels in Thor.

McDaniels is an NBA-caliber player, at least imo, and worth the price so this is a no-brainer. At worst he's solid depth.

I would say in most likely outcome is McDaniels is still the 9th or 10th man this year and then next year his role is absorbed by Thor.

Personally its a no brainer to keep McDaniels over Washington. Hopefully we can get a long term, cap friendly deal. I'd rather pay McDaniels 4/40 than PJ 4/100

Which teams even have enough cap space to offer PJ 20+ million this summer?

My count I have the following 7 teams have enough cap space to sign PJ if they renounce bird rights to other guys.
Houston: Just picked Jabari who plays PF
Detroit: Real option
Indiana: Real Option
San Antonio: Total tear down, plus they have Keldon at 4
OKC: Real Option I suppose
Magic: Not a fit
Utah: Lauri plays 4

So do we really think one of these three teams are going to blow their entire cap space on PJ Washington at 25 Million?

I just highly doubt it

Maybe if we are the Memphis or Toronto organization, but this team has shown that none of that matters, we will overpay even for our own free agents. It's that bad.

Is Terry the only one you are pointing to support this argument? Because there's a pretty big example of the current FO not overpaying their own FA in Kemba.

If the Hornets get off Rozier's contract their cap situation is actually going to be fine when Hayward comes off the books after next season. I don't actually think PJ will get 20 million, but even in a worse case scenario where he does, lets say they were to also resign Richards, DSJ, and McDaniels, for 35 mil combined, at that point their cap sheet besides rookie scales would be 62.5 mil for PJ, Richards, Martin, DSJ, and McDaniels. They're currently paying like 55 mil per year for just Rozier and Hayward, both of whom are significantly older than all those guys and Hayward doesn't play more often than he does.

Having five good young role players on small-medium contracts (easy to trade) locked up for only like half the cap is fine. I actually think there is a decent chance the combined cost of those five players will be more like 50 mil per year (PJ-15/Richards-12/DSJ-9/Martin-7.5/McD-7) and them messing up the 2021 draft so bad will give them a year pause on rookie extensions after PJ and Miles situations are resolved. If they want to keep Miles there is a chance they'll get him at a big discount and at the very least definitely won't have to shell out a massive contract like they were looking at doing before.

They really need to trade Rozier for cap space, though. He just doesn't fit the LaMelo timeline and his cap space would be better spent on younger role players. Hayward is expiring and if he is also much higher impact when he actually plays, so its fine to get stuck with him at this point and see if maybe you get a fairly healthy season out of him next season, which could bridge to a quick turnaround.

Is Jalen officially better than PJ?

Last 10: 14/4/3 on 50% shooting.
