“The big thing for Cam right now is to get back on the court and playing,” Schlenk said. “I think that’s a big part of it is just playing basketball. He’s super eager right now. He’s able to get in some shooting drills with the guys, but he’s still not up to full-speed running yet. We’ve spoken with him, and the plan is for him to participate on our Summer League team this year, just so he can get those reps and so he can get a head start when we get to camp next year. The biggest thing is the game just needs to slow down. Right now, everything is just moving too fast for him. He gets into too big of a rush. Once the game starts slowing down for him, especially on the offensive end, we’ve seen what he can do on the defensive end, but it’s really about getting experience. We all see the potential, see the flashes, but we all have to remember that he’s 21 years old. It’s really about getting him reps.”

I'm glad they convinced him of the usefulness of SL...even as a 3rd year player.

I hope they tell all our young players the tale of Omari Spellman. Kid showed up to SL out of shape...and was traded within the week.

Don't get too comfortable, Cam. You'll need to fight and claw for a chance at a spot in the rotation next season...

Cam Reddish is the perfect example of this. In The Athletic’s story on the firing of Lloyd Pierce, Reddish was one of the key players who didn’t have a strong relationship with Pierce. Back in March, there were several people inside the organization who felt like Reddish’s potential was the highest on the team — even higher than Young’s — and that Pierce’s coaching was holding him back.

Reddish played in only three games under McMillan after sitting out the past four months with Achilles soreness. Without any ramp-up at all, in the middle of the Eastern Conference finals, that talent was on display. He was the same defensive pest we saw in his rookie season and before he got hurt this year, and his confidence offensively shined. He finished with six 3s off the bench in Game 6, a franchise-high for a non-starter. There was optimism that a new voice for Reddish was going to unlock the talent the Hawks saw when they drafted him 10th overall. We saw that in these past three games.

“I really took to Cam when I first got here,” McMillan said. “He was a kid that I talked to early and was really wanting to coach him. I see a lot of Paul George in Cam — his length, his ability to defend. Working on his offensive game, (on Saturday) he shot the ball well, shooting the 3, as well as putting the ball on the floor getting to the basket. Kind of the makeup is really similar. He showed that he has a lot of potential. So that’s a talented player.”

McMillan coached George while in Indiana, so the comparison is one that would be familiar to him. For only coaching Reddish in three games, it speaks volumes that McMillan feels that way. In a not-so-subtle way, Reddish spoke about what McMillan has meant to him since joining the Hawks in the offseason.

“We kind of had a connection when I first met him,” Reddish said. “He just told me to just play my game. It felt good to just feel like he was on my side. I’m always going to have his back for sure. Good dude, great relationship.”

Reddish said it was an honor that McMillan compared him to George and said, “Coach, thank you if you’re watching (the Zoom press conference).” He said he just wants to be himself, though, and wants to get back into the gym so he can just be called “Cam Reddish” next time. This is an important offseason for Reddish after the high hopes the organization had coming into the season. During minicamp, training camp, and the trip the team took to Los Angeles for some pickup games, Reddish’s name was the one who came up most often for being the most impressive.

Cam was amazing last night. Obviously he is not going to shoot 64% from 3 for a season but I'm wondering where he will end up. I never thought of him as a shooter based on his previous FG percentages but I see that he has been a solid (81%) free throw shooter. That always gives me some optimism for a guy being able to become a better shooter.

And, as of now, he's still a Hawk. Nate seems to really like him. We all hope that he's finally 100% healthy
and can show all of us that he's just as great as most of us believe that he is.

So many games missed by so many Hawks last season, due to injury. Hoping that is all ancient history. New
season coming soon. I'm hopeful that we have a great season. And, I want Cam Reddish to be a part of it.

That was always a strong possibility.

Dude thinks he's a star in the making. And it's kind of a shame. He's slowly playing himself out of the league.

If he'd just embrace the Khris Middleton approach, he could easily be an elite role player.

I'm not a fan of Cam, but maybe the problems was the PG? Hopefully Trae's talent can unlock Cam's potential. Tre Jones was the worst PG in the ACC last year, maybe his inability to set up the offense was the reason for Cam's struggles?

I said this on page one back in 2019. Cam was widely talked about being mentally weak and not an NBA player coming out of Duke.

Some scouts had Cam as a second round pick if you factor in his performance in Duke, but Schlenk only looked at his youtube highlights.

If you look in another thread, i wanted to draft Herro or Sekou Doumbouya at #10. Sekou was my high reward, high risk pick (another Giannis or Kawhi) and Herro was my safe pick (will have a 10yr career and be another Heurter). Other players Schlenk could have got were Matisse Thybulle, Brandon Clarke, Keldon Johnson, Jordan Poole, Kevin Porter Jr., Nic Claxton...

Cam was Schlenk's biggest bust, but he got up out of it with a 1st rounder. Didn't like him at pick 10 at the time but options were limited, it is what it was. The guy is super inconsistent. When he plays well it's for short spurts.

Then the 2nd bust would probably be Spellman. Hawks got Damian Jones and GS 2026 2nd rounder for him. He passed on Brunson, Trent Jr., Vanderbilt, alot of other good players at the time.

I hope Cam is traded to a team he can flourish with but a journeyman for a few seasons is note likely.

It may have been the wrong pick by Schlenk but I am glad he had the good early sense to move on and get something positive back for him. He didn't compound the draft mistake by keeping him too long.

Years from now The 2019 draft for the Hawks will be looked at as the reason this team never develops into anything.
