So Germany doesn't reach the round of 16, obviously

No love for Morocco?

Casually walk up to the ball and then a weak ass ground kick? What happened to just powerfully directing it into the corner or something?

I am not American but ok.....soccer twitter was also roasting the Japanese and Spanish players for their weak kicks

Oh yeah they were terrible tries. But asking them to shoot penalties á la Maguire is akin to asking "huh, why they don't just can threes from 30 feet?".

I am American so feel free to dismiss my futbol knowledge if it makes your feel superior, but being able to put a penalty shot in the corner with force requires no special skills for a player on a World Cup roster. I mean we could all do that on my American travel team when I was 11.
He wasn't asking anyone to be the Steph Curry of penalties.

That's what soccer twitter was saying as well and I assume most of those people are more familiar with the game than my super casual, just watching for fun self.

Ahhh, you see, that's the problem.
Also, penalties to the corner are a minority in actual games. If they were so easy to make under pressure, players would... you know, try them.
Either way strong, high, around the middle is the statistically best try. Spain's weak, low, slightly to the side penalties are 50/50 at most, probably less vs Bono, which is... not good.Texas Chuck wrote:I am American so feel free to dismiss my futbol knowledge if it makes your feel superior, but being able to put a penalty shot in the corner with force requires no special skills for a player on a World Cup roster. Yeah, strong at 11 is not even remotely close to "strong". Everybody can adjust a ball to the corner in training, doing it consistently with actual force and on a high pressure situation is the tough part.

Texas Chuck wrote:But I feel comfortable with the idea that the Spanish penalty takers can consistently slot the ball into the corner with adequate pace in actual competition pretty consistently if they chose to.
