Poland just advanced in such a disgraceful manner that I almost don't feel happy about that...

Had the chance of capping the happiest sporting moment in the last 20 years (leaving Argentina in groups) and botched it. Disgraceful indeed.

Good effort from Japan, a shame they did so badly in the end.

As a completely casual 'soccer fan' who's all onboard Team Chaos fun to see Spain go out with their boring brand of basketball. Also, maybe some of the real soccer fans can explain to me what was with these weak penalties Japan and Spain were taking these last two days? Casually walk up to the ball and then a weak ass ground kick? What happened to just powerfully directing it into the corner or something?

I mean, I am kinda happy, lots of racist spaniards are raging right now.

You mean football? But yeah, it's been a really bad look. I love Nico Williams, but it's concerning that Nico Williams is your best player by a mile on a decider game (and of course he got taken out for a "penalty specialist", that always works about NEVER).

Players' comments after the game are really concerning too, acting like they dominated or something. No you did not, you had the ball, which is different.

Yeah, when I see a "penalty specialist" move, I always feel it's the end for the team. I really don't understand that move, as you said it almost never works.

Oh yeah they were terrible tries. But asking them to shoot penalties á la Maguire is akin to asking "huh, why they don't just can threes from 30 feet?".

I am American so feel free to dismiss my futbol knowledge if it makes your feel superior, but being able to put a penalty shot in the corner with force requires no special skills for a player on a World Cup roster. I mean we could all do that on my American travel team when I was 11.

He wasn't asking anyone to be the Steph Curry of penalties.

That's what soccer twitter was saying as well and I assume most of those people are more familiar with the game than my super casual, just watching for fun self. Even I felt it, their walks up were tepid and the kicks were without any force. I have seen the cutesy soft kicks but those are usually placed strategically, not just straight ground kicks.

In b4 Jaivl roasts me again for being a soccer illiterate.
------------

BTW, I can't wrap my head around a game which has no fixed time. It ends whenever the refs feel like it lol. Imagine in basketball you are down 2 and then the refs randomly add 2 minutes and then even with the 2 minutes, you get an extra 30-45 seconds and then the buzzer goes off lol.

Ahhh, you see, that's the problem.

Also, penalties to the corner are a minority in actual games. If they were so easy to make under pressure, players would... you know, try them.

Either way strong, high, around the middle is the statistically best try. Spain's weak, low, slightly to the side penalties are 50/50 at most, probably less vs Bono, which is... not good.

Yeah, strong at 11 is not even remotely close to "strong". Everybody can adjust a ball to the corner in training, doing it consistently with actual force and on a high pressure situation is the tough part.

I have no idea what you mean by strong. And I get you are upset in light of Spain going out the way they did. But I feel comfortable with the idea that the Spanish penalty takers can consistently slot the ball into the corner with adequate pace in actual competition pretty consistently if they chose to.

I also understand there can be strategic decisions to take a different approach at times based on scouting of the opposition keeper and how he plays penalties that I know the Spanish players had and I do not have.

I'm not criticizing the Spanish players. But strongly disagree that him posting hey kick it harder in the corner is anything approaching making 30 foot 3's under pressure.

Nah, don't try that crap on me. My love to my birthcountry it's confined exclusively to 1) memes 1b) it not being France or Argentina 2) being the birthplace of Ricard Rubio Vives.

Texas Chuck wrote:But I feel comfortable with the idea that the Spanish penalty takers can consistently slot the ball into the corner with adequate pace in actual competition pretty consistently if they chose to.

Ehhh, but can they? Spain has not had a clean penalty shootout in nearly 10 years. Busquets especially has always been a consistently terrible penalty taker.

Texas Chuck wrote:I also understand there can be strategic decisions to take a different approach at times based on scouting of the opposition keeper and how he plays penalties that I know the Spanish players had and I do not have.

Bono is a known penalty specialist that usually waits for the shooter, hence going for the 50/50 was an especially baffling decision. But that's not the point.

Texas Chuck wrote:I'm not criticizing the Spanish players.

Well, you should. Their penalties were objectively crap. "Just kick it to the corner dude" is a solution akin to "print more money".

Texas Chuck wrote:But strongly disagree that him posting hey kick it harder in the corner is anything approaching making 30 foot 3's under pressure.

I agree with your decision to be wrong

My bad. I have no idea how I could have possibly thought you were upset. I take that back and apologize for suggesting such a thing.

Kinda wanted Brazil to win it all. Bummed that possibly the 3rd best player of the century (after a GOAT and a top 5-10 guy) won't get the recognition he deserves. He played a wonderful game, too.

I think it's a stretch to call Dani Alves 3rd best player of the century. He played a wonderful game though, I agree.
