D'Angelo Russell in the 4th quarter: 20 pts, 7-7 FG, 6-6 3s.
When luck shuts the door skill comes in through the window.

This is what DLo can do. He can get red hot for a quarter, and shoot you into a win (or loss) in close games. In the other three, he was 5-9 and 0-3 3’s, and he didn’t go to the line at all, all night,
I listened to Dane Moore’s podcast today too, praising DLo’s 2-point shooting, if you don’t count the first half of the season. And if you focus on just that (not team needs like point of attack defense, helping on long rebounds and turnovers) then hooray! They seemed surprised that DLo’s net rating over that sample of games was negative, and the team was better off when he was off the court. To me, if you have to cherry-pick that much, you’re being biased.
I’m listening to DLo’s postgame, and I kind of agree with him that he is better as “just a basketball player” rather than a PG, like when Kyle Anderson is playing PG. I don’t think he should be playing point guard (2 AST, 3 TO tonight). He never wanted to play that position, (OSU forced him to learn it), and while he’s a good passer, he makes a lot of mistakes and he doesn’t have the feel of the game to get the team involved correctly. I’d prefer to see him as a microwave scorer off the bench, where he gets minutes on the nights where he’s on. But when you’re paid that much, I think it keeps you as a starter.

Let DLo be DLo. He is not a PG and cannot defend the PG for the full game. He is a combo guard or shooting guard that some time can make good passes

Russell is 11th among PGs and 13th among all NBA players for assists. He can make a good pass more than some time.

AAAAARRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Getting that W in Utah feels great and a good start for the 5 game road trip. Sucks they lost to OKC or they could've been riding a 4 game winning streak already. Hope they're not too gassed for Portland tomorrow

I guess the only question now is whether we can negotiate a new contract for DLo. 110 mil for 4yrs is not ideal, but it might be working solution for both sides.

I said it a while back and I meant it. Dlo is a wildly inconsistent player who gets paid for his ceiling and hated for his floor. If he wants a number starting with 3 he must be defensively sound for the rest of the season. Guys tend to over preform in a contract year, and Dlo began the season absolutely putrid. His lack of defensive effort unbalanced the entire scheme. To say nothing of his shooting woes.
Dlo as a PG makes the most sense in our rotation. Ant is a great slasher, but not a PG. He doesn’t seek to create for others, has a handle that is fine for a SG, but not for a PG, and is too quick to seek his own shot. With Dlo at the SG Ant must play SF and either MCD or KAT at the 4 with Rudy at the 5. Dlo must find a way to balance his shooting and passing and contribute 10 or 15 PPG on efficient shooting while getting at least 7 APG. Anything less than that and he doesn’t even have the right to ask for 30+. I am not trying to minimize his performance tonight or ignore that he is less comfortable as a PG than a SG or a combo guard. But fit matters, and we need a starting PG. If he wants a big bag, he needs to get comfortable with that role.

IMO DLo should not force himshelf into PG role. Just like today KA shared some load as facilitator. I expected the same from Towns, Edwards, Nowell, Moore etc. I mean let's play some motion offense where the ball movement is not necessary only PG responsibility.

Reid and Nowell? What happens to them?
As well as I understand there are three separate questions here. First, we are able technically to resign Edwards, MCD, DLo, Reid and Nowell. Second, depending on new contracts we might go in luxury tax zone, whether new owners will be willing to pay extra depends on our winning record. Finally, it is expected a big salary cap raise in 2023-24. I assume that for MIN as small market team it might be beneficial because we will be able to keep our RFAs without much of financial implications in future. Although I might be mistaken.

We need to focus on a sign and trade for a PG or assets that will help us acquire a PG.

Re: GAME THREAD: Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Utah Jazz
The defensive scheme has changed without Karl out there.
When a little gets by their defender, we’re playing on the side and behind him and letting that defender go face-to-face with Rudy.
It’s working and it’s how Utah did it too.
The offensive player can pass out or take on Rudy with another defender hanging around then in an unorthodox position (again: behind or to the side). Kinda crazy.

Russell is 11th among PGs and 13th among all NBA players for assists. He can make a good pass more than some time.
And 9th among PG in turnovers. I get so tired of him passing straight out of bounds with no player around in tight fourth quarters.
I will say that I think Russell gets scapegoated by some, but his fans look for tiny fractions of his overall play to defend him. I wanted to mention this now, after DLo had a good scoring quarter, for balance.
Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
