That was such a rollercoaster. I didn't expect us to win but man was it close in the end. I'm disappointed but also proud.

I root against them cause I have a lot of argentinian friends and they can be extremely unsufferable re/ football lol, don't want to go through that.

Would absolutely dread another Croatia v France final. And while Croatia v Morocco would be cool in terms of storylines (guaranteed first-time winner, both underdog runs having taken out multiple giants), that's about it and I would be very uninterested in the football itself. So I guess anything but Croatia winning today please lol.

Late to the penalty discussion but how I always thought of it:

The absolute last thing you can do want to do when attempting a penalty is to miss the target entirely. No matter where you shoot (bottom left, top right, top center, bottom center, etc), it has a chance at being successful if the keeper guesses incorrectly. The exception is if you miss the target entirely (i.e. what Kane did).

It's somewhat like a situation where you need to get a bucket in basketball and your team commits a turnover. That's the last thing you can do - you have to at least get a shot up and give yourself a CHANCE

It is true that shots-on-target that are near the top corners are more difficult to save. But they're also more likely to miss the target entirely. So the safe option is to aim lower.

Yeah, if you can accurately get it into the top of the net you're probably scoring - but that's far from a guarantee and those shots are the least likely to be on target. Also, notice how the middle left / middle right regions are also worse than bottom left / bottom right.

There's also the pressure aspect, of course. No one wants to be remembered for decades as they guy that lost their country the World Cup by skying the kick. When the pressure is THAT immense on someone, they're probably gonna play it safe. And the kick is most certainly not as easy as it would be outside of a game environment - just like a clutch free throw. It's why they always say that a huge part of penalty shooting is mental.

I think this explains why it can be a bit more complicated than just wanting to aim for the top corner. If you can get it there, yes that's certainly the best strategy. But getting it there is far from a guarantee.

I've been supporting Croatia for the last few rounds to win the WC and my dad got mad because Croatia doesn't have black people. I had to explain to him how slavery and colonization works. :lol:

I was so disappointed to see Morocco go out. A World Cup with them VS Argentina would have been fun, since both teams are easy to root for.

Does anybody use forums similar to RealGM but for other areas of interest - music, books, movies?

I don't particularly care who the owner/CEO is, but Twitter is starting to lose it's juice for me and I really do like the non-algorithmic, more community driven setup on here, warts and all.
