Beal or Lillard ?

Post#1 » by zaymon » Sun Dec 11, 2022 6:23 am

We need backcourt help. Two interesting options available this offseason could be Lillard and Beal. Both are not totally old and both are on teams without future. They both would help our backcourt but in a different manner.

Beal is propably cheaper, younger, bigger and better going to the rim.
Lillard is more proven in the playoffs, better in pick and roll and better shooter.

Another thing is potential backcourt partner. Can we aquire any of them without including Suggs ? Propably more realistic with Beal.

Suggs/Beal/Wagner/Banchero/Carter
vs
Lillard/Harris/Wagner/Banchero/Carter

On the other hand Lillard/Suggs combo could be a lot more deadly than Suggs/Beal becouse of the shooting. If Beal role is being primary guard initiator, he would propably gain more from having a deadly shooter next to him. Suggs feels a little redundant. Still Jalen's defense seems a lot more important, especially looking at Boston rotation.

Beal + Wright for Isaac, Anthony, Fultz, Bamba, Bol + picks?

Personally i lean towards Beal, but i can be convinced both ways.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Beal is massively overpaid, I wouldn't give anything for him, he is already a bad contract and has a long history of injuries.
The trade you suggested could be the worst in Magic history.

The main issue though, I have been following the Wizards for the last few years since they drafted Avdija, and while he puts up numbers Beal doesn't seem to effect wins and losses much, they play better team basketball when he's out.

Kyrie is probably better and a free agent. We could let Fultz go and offer him a 4-year max or we could package Fultz plus a pick to Brooklyn and give him a 5-year deal.

Kyrie for the next 5 years will probably be an all-star. He also has the Duke connection with Paolo and Wendell.

If I am not mistaken, Beals and Lillard will be making $50 million+ next season and neither seem to be involved in trade rumors. To get any one of them, I can’t imagine their respective team not asking for either Franz or Paolo.

Beal is indeed overpaid, but that could be the chance to get him for cheap. I would rather pay him than Fultz, Ross and Bamba.
Problem with Wizards is about whole roster not only Beal. They are dreadful at drafting and roster composition. Beal had some playoff success in the past. Players who can shoot and get to the rim with ease are usually not the problem. He is also 6'4 which is ok for a guard.

Problem with Beal is. Is there another scorer who impacts winning less than him? Everytime he is the best player in Washington, they are a bottom team. Everytime someone is slightly better than him, they are mediocre (Westbrook last good season & Porzingis). The only time they were kinda good, they had prime Wall, who was much better. + He hasnt played over 60 games the last 3 seasons.
If we can get him for cheap (1-2 protected picks at most) ok but thats probably not enough.
Lillard is great but he is 11-12 years (+ our high pick ~13 years) older than our cornerstones of the rebuild. Makes no sense to give a ton of assets away, when there is such a big gap in age. Even Booker/Paul had only 9 years differential & their window was 2 years, while Booker was going into his 5th season & pretty much the whole roster was already there (Mikal, Ayton, Cam..), so he was much more ready to compete.
Lillard probably got more years left in the tank but our roster is further away.

I would go for Beal. Give up on Harris,Ross,Isaac + Den pick (maybe add 2025 ORL pick too, but thats the max, because of his horrible contract)

Starters: Fultz,Beal,Franz,Banchero,WCJ
Bench: Cole,Suggs,Bol,Moe,Mo
Reserves: Kevon,Okeke,Houstan

And we have probably two 2023 top10 first round picks.

That would be a playoffs team next year.

do not want Kyrie near the team. look at all the teams that have gotten better once he left, besides him being a team disrupter

Well no one is paying 50 million a year for those 3, Ross and Bamba may not receive another Nba contract, Fultz needs to stay healthy and show improvement, I wouldn't make a decision on him right now.

Though you're kind of right, the Wizards are the most selfish team I've seen, maybe Beal goes to a contender and plays within his role, the talent is definitely there.

His checkered past is an opportunity to get a perennial all-star. I'm not too caught up in what his past is. He'll likely be better than Lillard and Beal the next 5 years.

There is no perfect option. Every player will have some flaws. We have to find one that is gettable without giving up too much. Franz and Paolo are the future. We just need an NBA caliber guard.

Neither?

Beal has an albatross contract. He hasn’t proven to be a primary option on a good team. He will be 30 years old next season.

Lillard has had injuries lately. He will be 33 next season and will want a chance at winning a championship at some point. That won’t be in Orlando if he had a choice at all.

Like someone else said, I’d offer Kyrie the max. I know he can be somewhat of a head case at times but it’s better than throwing money away at players who are barley starters in this league.

If we want to go the trade route I could see Miami blowing it up very soon. Someone like Herro should be available.

Given their respective ages (Lillard 33 this summer, Beal 30 this summer), neither guy falls into the category of "give up 3 first round picks" like the Cavs did for Mitchell or the Hawks did for Murray for me.

Obviously SGA would be the main target, but the cost would be massive and I don't think he's on the block right now anyway.

Beyond SGA, I'd have varying degrees of interest in Simons, Fox, Vassell, Herro, Poole, Anunoby, Murray and many others if they became available.

He was a big part of the Cavs championship. The Celtics didn't do anything with Fournier either. The young players for the Celtics got better and they rid of Hayward and then Fournier.

I'd go after Kyrie too. He is an unrestricted free agent. We have the cap space. He is still in his prime plus an all star. Really good scorer. Good fit with our young squad

Kyrie? On a small market team with a losing young core, inexperienced coach and a conservative ownership/management.

What could go wrong?

Let our young guns prove to the League they are ready and in two years sign Luka. This would be the easiest way to turn the team into a dynasty.
