Question: Has any superstar ever been on worse teams for their entire prime than Maravich?

Pete played on worse teams, so he basically didn't play in the playoffs and when he did, he faced 1970s Celtics. I don't think Iverson would fare much better than him in his place, even though he's a better player than Maravich.

I don't think people realize that these 1999-05 Philly teams did reasonably well without Iverson.

Primes (stats include playoffs):

76ers record without Iverson, 99'-05': 36-53 (.404)
76ers record with Iverson: 293-223 (.568)

Hawks/Jazz record without Maravich, 73'-78': 26-47 (.353)
Hawks/Jazz record with Maravich: 192-233 (.452)

Makes me wonder.....has any NBA Superstar ever been on worse teams in their prime than Maravich?

Thanks for the numbers.

The Maravich numbers probably inflate his impact. It would appear to feature two Atlanta seasons and 4 Jazz ones. But the Hawks seasons are 79 and 76 games (average 77.5, so 4.5 absences), the Jazz 79, 62, 73 and 50 (average 66, so 16 absences). The with sample thus tilts proportionally more towards the better Hawks team and the without more towards the weaker Jazz.

Re worse teams in prime it depends what one means (does "team" include the player themself, what definition of "superstar", what definition prime - where one draws the line on those matters) but the circa 20 on-off guys (e.g. Robinson, Garnett) come to mind as teams that around their apex, seem first glance really awful without their stars.

Garnett is the first one that comes to my mind.

Is Maravich the most overrated superstar of the 1970's?

Has anyone played on worse teams (over the course of their entire prime) than Pistol Pete?

Around here, no, Pistol Pete is not overrated.

Among mainstream media, yes, he is the most overrated 70s player by a good bit.
