just based on historical improvements from non-shooters in the past i would've considered ~33% on ~3 attempts a game a success but he's definitely exceeded that, assuming he keeps up his shooting.
he's also shown the odd flash of a dribble-drive game but that should be an area of focus for him in the coming off seasons.

If there is a season for him to get his struggles out on making moves driving to the basket, its this year.... He's got to be capable of doing something when someone runs him off the 3 point line so he might as well get all those mistakes in this year so he's better and more capable next season when we're really trying to win every night.

He just needs to stop taking steps when he starts driving...

I think there's a lot to be excited about with Stew. People have been putting limits on his ceiling since he was a rookie but he keeps adding to his game and becoming more versatile. By year 5/6 he could be even more complete, and a starter on a winning team rather than the "energy bench guy" that so many have labeled him as.

Re: Stewarts impressive three-point shooting (article)
IMO the only reason Stew wouldn't be considered a starter on a playoff team is because he doesn't look like he'll be a 20/10 guy. But he doesn't need to be if this team develops the way we all hope it will. It's not realistic to expect any team to have an All Star/near All Star at every starting position. Cade is a 20PPG player, Bojan is a 20PPG player, Ivey certainly looks like a 15-18PPG player, so if Duren can put up 10 a game (which should be no problem if he's starting since his PER36 currently is 10.8) and Stew keeps putting up 12 a game, that's in the ballpark of 80PPG from that hypothetical starting lineup. And yeah, that's going to win some games considering Bey, Hayes, Burks and Bagley on the hypothetical bench.

For sure, one knock on the Duren/Stewart pairing in the starting lineup is they are both our best rebounders.... and we don't get a lot of scoring from them. I do like them building chemistry together this year because I think they are playing together a ton again next year unless we get lucky and land #1 and then things will get interesting.
I think they do fit together in the starting lineup if you're getting a bunch of scoring from your 1/2/3 guys then a Stewart/Duren frontcourt is a good tough defensive minded and rebounding combo up front. But you need guys at your 1/2/3/ spots that are really capable of scoring the ball for those two guys to pair well in a good starting lineup. Bojan clearly fits that mold, as well as Cade. Ivey I'm still on the fence on a bit for next season, but I think eventually he gets to being a good efficient scorer in the league.
The Stewart/Duren combo would also help hide some of the defensive shortcomings that a Cade/Ivey/Bojan starting 1/2/3 unit has.

The only issue i can see with everyone thinking that the 4/5 for the future is locked down, is if the Pistons land #1. I mean it's a good issue, don't get me wrong, but who gets benched, or moved out of Stewart/Duren in this scenario?bstein14 wrote:For sure, one knock on the Duren/Stewart pairing in the starting lineup is they are both our best rebounders.... and we don't get a lot of scoring from them. Its the same deal if the Pistons land #2 with Scoot. The team has a lot of young talent, and key players are really starting to come on. Who gets pushed to the side, in favor of the new top pick?
Just a thought experiment. I've been giving a great deal of thought to these two possibilities, as they are very real. Detroit has an incredible amount of young talent now, and next year is going to be crazy interesting, just in how it's all going to be shuffled.
The pressure to start playing winning basketball is going to be immense next year. (Just for reference on that, when the Pistons finish this season with 20 some odd wins again, it will officially be the worst 4 year stretch in Pistons basketball history)

Either Stewart or Duren (or Bojan) could be moved to the bench for VW most likely. VW and Cade would be the only two guys on the roster that are absolute starters. VW appears to have the lateral quickness to defend the SF position and it actually might create a lot of mismatches for us to put him there. I know he's most likely long term a PF in the league, but Stew also being able to defend most SFs makes it a bit of an interesting young front line... hopefully we get lucky and see what the team has to decide to do.
Ivey also is very easily a player that could go to the bench if a young guard comes in and outplays him and deserves that starting spot. I think you go into training camp without a set starter and you see how the guys do and maybe let both start certain games and you go from there.
Scoot - Ivey - Cade - Stew - Duren
Cade - Ivey - VW - Stew - Duren
Scoot - Cade - Bojan - Stew - Duren
Cade - Ivey - Bojan - VW - Stew
Cade - Ivey - Bojan - VW - Duren
I wouldn't be upset with any of those lineups obviously I'm thrilled we got a top 2 pick and you move out whoever needs to be moved out to make it work. I think VW is 100% a starter day one but Scoot could likely come off the bench for at least a little bit if Ivey takes a big leap from year 1 to year 2. Ivey has been such a bad shooter and inconsistent defensively as a rookie I think its not out of the realm that he ends up on the bench to start year two if we land Scoot, which is the third scenario listed.
