ESPN tried to rank all 36 CFP participants for the 9 years of their history. It was an interesting exercise, but choosing a COVID-year team as #1 was pretty questionable.

That said, the most important part of the article was the reminder that only 4 out of 16 semifinal games have been decided by less than 17 points. There's no parity in college football, and there are often only 2-3 teams good enough to play for the title. That's the part about expanding the playoffs that doesn't get mentioned often enough. Do we really need a bunch more blowouts in neutral stadiums before we just let the obvious best teams play each other? I wouldn't even have 4 teams in the playoff this year, as it's plainly obvious that Georgia should be playing Michigan. In other years, you might need more teams if the championship matchup isn't so obvious. I still find conference championship week far more compelling than the playoffs, even when the Badgers aren't in it.

It's the best regular season in sports precisely because of how hard it is to make the playoffs, but the postseason is getting more and more like an exhibition season with all the transfers and coaching changes. And I don't think the days of top prospects skipping the playoffs are that far off. Nobody would have ever dreamed a coach would leave a team still in the hunt for the playoffs, but it happened to Notre Dame last year.

I wonder if the results would be different if teams didn't have a month to prepare for the games. The week to week grind of conference play leads to generally closer games.

I am kinda indifferent on all of this and I'm usually one to agree that Vegas/the ratings will see 2-3 teams head and shoulders above the rest all year.

That said, I think the slight advantage for me would be to do the expansion because even though we know Georgia would kick the **** out of the Tulane/USC winner or whatever it ends up being...it's still more football. And there could be an upset.

Also, random, but while Michigan 100% deserves the #2 seed and I agree they might as well have done the BCS this year and matched those two teams up - Ohio State would be favored over Michigan if they met again. They absolutely have a shot. TCU probably has no shot.

I expect lots of blowouts with the expanded playoffs. At least in the second round. But every once in a while a low seed will go far and maybe even win it. Part of what makes the hoops tournament so fun. Granted I think it's easier for upsets in basketball.

A home playoff game in December in Madison? Love it.

That could be part of it. The long layoff also adds discontinuity to bowl season, and sometimes it doesn't even feel like the same teams out there. That's another reason I think the hype and excitement peaks with rivalry week and championship week. Having student sections also helps. Bowls often feel vaguely like alumni vacations to me, even when there's a lot at stake. I guess I'm just not all that bought-in on the concept of national playoffs. The calendar doesn't help, but you can't blame coaches and players for wanting to prepare for their next destination.

Once the playoffs expand, won't the huge layoff be phased out? They will need those weeks to play the first 2 rounds.

The first round will be 2 weeks after the conference championships. Most of 5-12 will have 3 weeks between games. I can't imagine they'd go up against NFL on Sunday so maybe 4 games on Saturday or 2 Friday night and 2 Saturday night (more likely).

Always thought that would be a cool gig to have as a retired NFL player. "Consultant" or "Part-Time Assistant". Depending on how much you made in your career, probably just ask for travel and expense reimbursements. Walk the bench on gameday to motivate and give tips, then go on recruitment trips or host them on campus visits.

Okay, now I want him to do well. It's one thing for Badgers fans to hate on him after all the dumb throws he made, but Florida fans don't have a right to be so outraged yet.
