Cason Wallace

Post#1 » by SeattleJazzFan » Thu Dec 22, 2022 10:01 pm

After a breakout offensive showing last night, i think it's time he has a thread.

Wallace has been steady all year, Cal clearly trusts him and wants him out there as often as possible. elite defensively, good size if he can show lead guard skills, but mostly just solid and steady offensively. TS% at 60%+ and seems like a high bball IQ guy, but not the most creative or dynamic offensive player either creating for himself or teammates.

but last night dropped 29 and 9 assists on 5-6 from three. if he can use that game as a bit of a springboard and show more pop offensively going forward, he could be pretty special.

Definitely deserves a thread.

He’s like a 3D PG that can create 3s for himself and floaters. In the right system he could be dynamic and have uber efficient.

The bigger problem (because his FT% is almost certainly variance) is not getting to the line enough for his archetype.

I have him as a late-lotto or mid-teens guy. Offensively, he's not as skilled right now as most starting PGs in the league. However, if he plays a fair amount off the ball and next to a dynamic wing, he'll space the floor, secondary playmake and guard the point of attack. So whether he's a starter depends on how teams want to use their PG stylistically, imo.

Also, I think he's probably going to measure out around 6'3".

It's somewhere between Marcus Smart and Lu Dort in terms of archetype. It can be a hard needle to thread if the team fit isn't right.

I like his fit in Charlotte a lot next to LaMelo. I think he'd be a reach if they ended up picking as high as they need to (top 5 if not top 2), but if they are picking mid to late lottery they should take a hard look at him imo.

I think he has a solid floor as at least a 3rd or 4th guard. Think Derrick White, imo. But if you compare him to other tough, defensive-minded starters, like Jrue, Smart or Rozier, he's not there yet in terms of offensive skill level and versatility.

I mean that goes without saying. It took those guys years to be who they are now.

He plays bigger than 6’3. Will be able to even defend SFs. He closed out really well and has great anticipation and IQ on D.

Don’t think he has the handles or playmaking to be a PG but would be really good as secondary guy and off ball.

Better shooter than Davion Mitchell and bigger. Similar D profile.

Just reminds me of Jrue/Smart type/potential level of player.

With that 3 ball he has that could be one really damn good winning player.

Tired of Kentucky players getting underdrafted because Cal doesn't know how to manage his roster. Wallace is a top 10 pick. His FT% scares me, but I think he's at the very least a 3&D type PG.

Jevon Carter 2.0 at this point with Jrue upside.

I love his game. Comp is Jrue Holiday. Can play on or off ball and a potential all nba defender.

He's much bigger than Jevon Carter. If Jevon Carter was 6'4" he'd be a different player.

Kentucky already measured him and the rest of the players on the team at their Pro Day right before the season started. Cason is 6'3" in shoes with a 6'6" wingspan..

It's an interesting archetype.

Smart was way better in college than Cason. Smart was a monster at Oklahoma St. And as a result went with a top 6 pick (he has returned good value for that draft slot too, obviously).

Jrue wasn't as good in college, but worked his a%% off to develop a ton in the NBA, to the point where he's been a little better as an NBA player than Smart.

Other guys in that archetype are Derrick White (perhaps Cason is more like him but a better shooter, while being a little shorter?), Patrick Beverly (Cason is taller and better shooter), Lu Dort and Davion Mitchell. They don't all end up being as good as Jrue - and Jrue ended up being REALLY good in the NBA, relative to his college production - which is hard to project onto other guys..

UK is listing him at 6'4" currently. Not sure it matters. He'd have more impact as a defender if he were bigger.
