There are so many terrible takes that are backed up by mindless "facts"/context-less stats. It's just the norm now.

People seem to forget how competitively we ended last season. It would be reasonable to expect us to significantly exceed that standard as this young team improves.

That being said, I'm getting very impatient and really want to see some wins.

Ugh, not the biggest fan of this move. The Pistons not only have the worst record in the league, but often look like one of the worst teams in recent memory. They're exceptionally bad. And please, the argument that this team has more talent doesn't hold up for me. You start two rookies and no surprise they're losing games. The truth is that they're an awful, unorganized mess defensively most games that is pushing "the process" to new levels of ineptitude.

Nobody should be celebrated for putting an awful team out there three years running. Maybe it will work out, and looking like a disaster for so long will produce a real team, competing and winning.

I'd say it's just as likely Pistons have a new GM in a few years. Hope I'm wrong, but it's what I see.

It's a rebuild, it's what just about the entire Pistons fanbase has been screaming to be done for over a decade now so it's going to be messy for a while. This is what a full, scorched earth rebuild looks like. I did expect a bit of a jump in the standings this season (still figured they would hover around the bottom 5 though) but this is what you get when your best player is playing injured and then out the entire season and you're going with a strong youth movement.

With that said, I wouldn't anoint Weaver like some others have and am definitely in wait and see mode, but thus far he's doing exactly what should be done in a rebuild. Build up the young talent base, collect draft assets and no long term commitments straining the cap (isn't this what we all wanted?). My biggest issue is his loyalty to Casey, I would have preferred a more innovative younger coach to guide the rebuild especially in this next phase of the rebuild so hopefully this is Casey's last season and they can bring in a different voice to help them take the next step.
As others have said, the hard work now begins to build a contender so we'll see what he's really made of the next few seasons because it's time to start winning beginning next season.

He had a 4 year deal ending in 2024?

I would have waited - I dont think he did anything special. Hayes, Bey, Stewart was a huge whiff. 3 chances and not one star or even close to it. The best guy so far looks like Beef Stew who is like a 4th guy on a title contender.

There was Haliburton, then Maxey could have been chosen with any of those picks.

Cade was a no brainer and even then in 5 years he might not be as good as Mobley - we'll see. This team sucks and its really a long term plan so maybe taking the guy with Hakeem type upside was a better move than Bradley Beal type upside.

Ivey has top 10 in the league speed - but Mathurin looks like a better player already. If we didnt have Hayes and Cade, Ivey would have been the right pick.

That's not counting all the weird free agency stuff.

Overall there was zero reason to give him an extension, especially in the off season.
