What's the scoop so far this season?

Post#1 » by Keith Van Horn » Thu Dec 22, 2022 5:14 pm

Yo.

Long, long time Nets fan here. And used to come around these parts a lot a while ago. But with the team feeling so chaotic last year and offseason, I haven't been as tuned in as I normally was (also work, kids, house projects, etc.). I needed a break from this team. And after the Kyrie drama at the start of the year with the documentary thing, I hit pause hard.

But I'm trying to really come back to check in on the pulse of this team... so just looking for the scoop on the season and players.

Where the hell did Yuta come from?
Who is this Sumner kid?
Patty is out of the rotation?
Clax has grown into a man?
Is Ben actually showing signs of promise?
Is Warren gonna be a difference maker for us?'
Is Joe Harris back?
Is Cam still the next coming of Kobe?
What is our missing piece/pieces still?
Who's on the block for us?

What else am I missing or should I know?

Yuta and Sumner come from 2 organizations that excel at development (Toronto and Indy) that shook loose because of injury histories. The Nets actually took back Sumner and a second roundee while he was rehabbing a torn Achilles to save Indy money.

The smurfs (Mills and Curry) are mostly out of the rotation under Vaughn.

Clax has really developed. Ben is rounding into form, but seems less impactful in Kyrie lineups.

Joe is back with better defense than ever.

Cam is a minutes eater in blowouts and rest games.

We need a bigger 3&D PG unless Sumner can continue to improve and becomes more controlled.

Curry is the most likely to be moved. Possibly Mills.

I was mostly enjoying watching the games (including the local team), but when that fiasco hit, I did kinda mentally check out. I still follow the news, watch highlights and read game threads, but that's about it for the moment.

I feel like the Nets more or less did the right thing (under a certain amount of pressure) in how they handled Kyrie, but it did kinda break something in me. Simmons, Yuta, Sumner, Warren and O'Neale are rather fascinating players / personalities, and are fun to follow, but there's a sort of toxic air about the Nets that's mainly come from Kyrie going wackadoodle every damn season. It's too much like the Iverson-Sixers situation which completely lost me as a fan by 2001, even though I lived in Philly at the time.

Sorry this doesn't really answer your Q's, but I heavily related to what you said above, and am kinda waiting for my 'second wind' of interest this season. Also, there's the fact that the Nets have looked fantastic during much of the last two RS's, only to crash and burn in the PO's. So I guess I'm a little wary / jaded at this point.

Yuta is one of those Marks pick ups sort of like Bruce Brown who you heard the name and maybe seen him play a few minutes on the Pistons. Same as Joe Harris , just a fringe player on a small market team. I honestly don't know how or why these players blossom once they get here, but Marks track record is pretty good. Is it our system? Player development?

Sumner and Warren...Sumner missed all last season with an Achilles injury, and Warren missed the previous two seasons with a left foot injury. Both IMO high risk high reward. The league should be grateful for all the medical advancements that allow players return to playing when not too long ago those injuries sometimes were career ending.

Patty is in and out of the rotation, it looks like he is going to be playing less minutes unless Kyrie.......... He excels in his role as mentor, Veteran and it goes without saying he is a high high character person.

Claxton......In the words of Yogi Berra "90% of the game is half mental'. It took Nic a little longer to adjust both mentally and physically then say Jarrett Allen. But it is safe to sat that Nic is our "Most Improved Player". He is exciting to watch, and has a great opportunity to shine with the Nets.

Is Cam the next coming of Kobe?......(I could just vision the steam coming out of MDB ears as he reads that).....To be blunt no he is not. Although, he does have the Mamba Mentality on offense. He is fearless and seems to shrug everything off and that is a good thing. He is one of those players that could have a breakout all star year down the road if he gets the minutes.

Is Joe back?......I would not say 100% but he is getting there. Huge difference between the first 20 games and these last 10. And that goes to show how important of piece Joe is. We need those 15 point + games from Joe. When he does well we do well.

Missing piece? Not sure, but we know Marks is not known for in season moves (Except Harden). I did recently read we were interested in the Hawks John Collins. My guess is that we stay as is.

On the Block? I would think Cam and Kessler are the most likely. Although if some other superstar demands out and wants to come to Brooklyn, all bets are off.

Oh gosh, Dzanan Musa also had that mentality, and boy...

Not to mention, for all the great things he was, Kobe was also a huge chucker who borked his teams over in all kinds of ways.

I'm of the belief a few players are being pumped up in playing time for a possible trade deadline move.
A stretch 5 with size is needed and the team is not getting one with any of the lowly paid kids.
Curry or Joe or even both depending the return.
Even Kyrie has increased his trade value, but as long as he behaves he will be required.
Still the team needs to loose a small or two for a big.

The posters above have already covered the scoop this season perfectly.

I will just add that morale amongst Nets fans is serendipitously high right now considering where we were 5 or 10 games into the season. Coach JV has truly breathed life back into the Nets franchise and fandom. I love the energy and togetherness we're playing with right now, but of course there are many more games and trials to come. The next 2 games against the Bucks and Cavs will give us a good gauge on how much our weaknesses and unknowns(lack of depth/girth at the 5, can Ben and Clax lineups survive offensively, and lack of height in the backcourt) will hinder our strengths in games against serious playoff opposition. The move that I'd like to see is a Seth and Cam trade for either a 5 or a big wing as it will help our roster balance, both Seth and Cam are excellent at what they do but I think they would be better appreciated on another roster at this point.

Yeah man, I totally get that. These recent years have really tested my fandom and interest in the team and sport of basketball. I mean, I was invested in watching every game even during the terrible 12 win season (and I'm not just saying that), and even in the post Deron/KG/JJ rebuild years. But there's just this toxic cloud vibe hanging with us after Kyrie joined us. Which admittedly, in his first season with us, I didn't feel it that much. I wish it could just be about basketball and handling business... but something always pops up with this dude. I'm really wanting to come back out from under my rock... He has seemed to mellow out, the boys are playing great team ball, JV has been a blessing of a changeup, and KD is just in utter god mode lately.

I'm glad we're not playing on Christmas... can you imagine a reporter asking Irving "what does Christmas mean to you?" and he goes off on some "Santa is a myth / children need to wake up / Christianity is a scam /Jesus was really an alien" type tangent?

JV just has such a "sage" presence to him. He just looks like a pro and commands respect. It seems like the guys, especially KD, have bought into JV and to me this has been huge.

I heard we almost brough back Ime Udoka too... did that just get thrown into the trash can completely? Is there still any chance he could come back as an assistant here? Or is he just on probation with the Celtics and he's going back after this year?

I think out of all the players, I wouldn't mind seeing Cam moved.

There's something to be said for a team playing well and keeping important role player vets - ie Curry, Patty, Joe - around for when the going gets tough.

Cam is the teams insurance if at the end of the season both Kyrie and Curry walk, which according to rummers is a good bet.
Now imagine if all 3 are gone.

ah I see.

Well Kyrie can kick rocks on his way out for all I care. Maybe we explore trading him over everyone else.

Curry has been slow coming back from injury, but Vaughn also prioritizes size and defense. He tries to avoid having two of Kyrie, Curry and Mills on the court together, which limits opportunity.

Gotta trade Kyrie for a Steven-Adams-type player, and let Ben run the show and hit our spot-up shooters.
Nobody in the world is better at assisting 3-point-shooters than Ben.

Kind of random and unrelated to the Nets this season, but do guys like Prokorov, Paradise, VC4P still come around here? I've been back about a week and don't think I've seen any of them? Maybe a lot of guys just couldn't take the offcourt stuff anymore? lol, don't blame anyone for that.

I think Prok got banned. 'dise and VC4P still are around. The off court stuff has done a number on this board though.
