Like sliding too much, never handing the ball to the center, etc.

If he's going to be in the media next year, more chances to stick the knife into McCarthy.

Plus it lessens the compensation the Cowboys would have to give up if he’s out of football for a year. Payton wouldn’t want the team he’s going to, to have an empty cupboard.

Gruden trade cost 2 first round 2 second round picks. It’s not that far of

I have no doubt the Saints would get that but they’re not getting Parsons. Jerry is not in the habit of just giving away rookie superstar players.

Jerry is also not in a habit of giving away draft picks (to his credit). All I’m saying is whoever wants Payton is going to have to pay premium price

Unless Payton sits for a year which really likely to happen. The compensation won’t be as high if he’s out of football for a year.

If that happened, Saints might allege collusion/tampering to have Payton resign after this season and then go back into coaching as the next Cowboys HC.

Proving that would be damn near impossible.

That's great if he has great run with another team.

Seems like he's bailing out of the losing situation he had with the Saints and hoping to get to a new team to reset his career. It will likely be a losing team which hires him but some of them will have some assets like high draft picks, maybe cap space for key free agents.

He wouldn't be the oldest head coach but is he prepared to develop a QB at his age? Well he could draft the next Burrow or Mahomes or Herbert. Even a mid tier guy like Tua could get his new team into the playoffs fairly quickly.

Or maybe he doesn't need a prospect with elite arm talent, maybe someone like the next Hurts will let him build a big winner.

Still should be interesting how he does without one of the best QBs in NFL history.

he wont necessarily go to a bad situation, chargers would get rid of staley quickly if he says he is coming to l.a. maybe dallas and cleveland too. heck carolina might make the playoffs and tepper might still try to hire him, qb situation there isnt great though.

cowherd keeps connecting him to chargers and he is plugged in with the chargers gm, i think he goes there unless chargers upset chiefs or bills and make a run.

I'd love to see it happen but I'm not so sure. Spanos doesn't exactly have the reputation of making bold moves and they've been criticized by Charger fans and former players for years for firing Schottenheimer after the 14-2 season in 2006. I think Staley is probably back next year now that they've made the playoffs regardless of how the wild card game goes (and I don't mind Staley, I think he's fine).

15 years ago Cowher left the Steelers for CBS but everyone expected him to be back in the league in short order, but that he'd wait for the right opportunity (i.e., a franchise with a good QB) to come back. The Chargers were even speculated as a destination back then. But the right opportunity never came and Cowher has been on TV all this time. I think the only teams Payton really wants to coach are the Chargers and the Cowboys, maybe the Bengals too. But none of those jobs look to be open this offseason so I think he waits another year.
