It’s crazy he was third last year and probably won’t make the list this year. But we all have recency biases when building this list, and with AD going out again it’s hard to say he’s reliable enough to value at his talent.

I think third was crazy last year, but ...

Thing is, for the last several years Rudy Gobert has graded out as a more impactful player, and Davis hasn't had a stretch like he just did since the championship year. I thought he had gone the way of Dwight Howard, was still very good, great even, but not what he was. Then he rolled back time, so clearly if the conditions are right he can be that guy. I don't think that is something that should be discounted.

Davis was voted 3rd closer to 2 years ago (Feb 2021) and in basketball terms 2 seasons ago (In Feb 2021 they were only 30 games into the 20-21 season due to the late start). He was the 13th player nominated so if he hadn't gotten injured again he would have gotten in easily by now, but now that it's obvious this will probably always be how it goes with him it's harder to value him and on a shorter deal. I still think you could argue though that taking him over Siakam or Brown would be the correct play because that upside is just so valuable to win championship. If you're the Mavs and were picking between taking Siakam or just saying YOLO and going with potential all time unstoppable Doncic/Davis combo and hoping the latter stays healthy I think I'd have to seriously consider it. Then again or a team that's already really good like the Celtics maybe you prefer the Brown/Siakam safety.
