How good was the 2018 Draft?

Post#1 » by azcatz11 » Fri Dec 30, 2022 5:04 am

Is this a Top 5 draft of all time? It's nowhere near 2003 or 1984 or 1996 (more depth?) but do you think it cracks the top 5?

If not top 5, it has to be top 10 at this point right?

HOF Talent:

Luka

All NBA Talent:

Ayton
Young
SGA
Miles Bridges (pre arrest)
Anfernee Simons
Bridges
MPJ

NBA Starters:
JJJ
Sexton
Walker IV (questionable)
Time Lord
Huerter

Then you have a ton of rotation guys IE Grayson Allen, Mo Bamba, Zhaire Smith, Shamet, DiVenzo, etc.

Well first of all, All-NBA talents are also HOF talents. I don't think all the players listed under All-NBA are of similar quality (e.g. SGA is way ahead of most, as most of the players under your category are fringe All-Star talents rather than All-NBA talents), and it severely underrates JJJ who – if he can ever stop fouling as much and stay healthy – is a better talent than most on your All-NBA list. It misses Brunson entirely, and Zhaire Smith is unlikely to even play an NBA game again, so he's certainly not a rotation player.

But yes, the 2018 was exceptionally strong. I think that is pretty much accepted by everyone. We can talk about exact rankings compared to all other drafts but it's up there as one of the best for sure.

I can't believe I missed Brunson - and I mixed up Zhaire Smith with Ziaire Williams

It's an awesome draft but how in the hell do you have Sexton and Lonnie Walker ahead of Huerter?

I don't think chronological order means what you think it means. Regardless I would not lump Sexton or Walker with the other 3 guys in that group.

How would you rank the 2018 draft overall? Top 5 of all time?

I think it may be top 3 all time with 1996 and 1984.
