Questions & Answers about the Rebuild

Post#1 » by EliteSmarts » Sat Dec 31, 2022 1:27 am

Hello Magic fans. I've been following your rebuild since the Magic got Paolo Banchero. Probably my favorite rebuild in the East. I want to hear from Magic fans how the rebuild is going and where you expect to be. I got few questions

How has Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner been this season? How good you do expect them to be in the long term? (Legit #1 & #2 players on championship team, superstars all star etc.)

How has Jalen Suggs been progressing this season and where so you expect them to be long term?

Marielle Fultz & Cole Anthony, are either player part of your long term plans?

For the big men, WCJ, Mo Wagner, Bol Bol & Bamba. Which of these players are part of the long term future and why are they?

Outside of Wemby and Scoot. Which player would like from draft with your pick (Top 5) and Bulls pick? (Lottery)

Last question. Jamahl Mosley, what do you think of the job he's done so far leading this rebuild?

Thanks for the answers and excited to see what y'all got to say

Your answers will vary wildly depending on the fan but to answer your questions:

1. I consider Paolo a future first option and Franz better suited as a third option.

2. Jalen Suggs has progressed some, I could see him as a Marcus Smart type player at his peak.

3. Everybody on this team except Paolo and Franz are expendable. Fultz and Anthony could either stay or go depending on team needs.

4. Just as in question 3 everybody is expendable except Paolo and Franz. Therefore, all the big men can either stay or go depending on the team's needs. But if I had to pick the one who is most likely to stay it would be WCJ. WCJ just has the most well-rounded game out of the three.

5. If not Wemby or Scoot, I am picking George and Amen Thomspon but that can change as the draft nears. Nick smith would be a great pick as well.

6. Mosely has done great considering the expectations.

They are learning. We are on a losing streak and Paolo is in a slump so I am not sure how to look pass all that and see them as #1 and 2 on a championship team. Paolo has to become a more efficient shooter in the midrange and 3 pointer, he needs to become more aggressive, and more selfish. He is seeing different looks from the defensive schemes and he need to learn to read them and adjust properly in the offensive side. Oh, yeah, he needs to learn to be a better held defender. But, like I said, he’s learning. Franz, he’s great.

Don’t get me wrong- I wouldn’t trade Paolo, I really do like him and I think that he’ll be great for us. He’s just learning now.

How has Jalen Suggs been progressing this season and where so you expect them to be long term?

No idea, he’s hurt.

Marielle Fultz & Cole Anthony, are either player part of your long term plans?

I am not a Cole fan and will be extremely bias on this question. I like Cole’s personality but not his game.

For the big men, WCJ, Mo Wagner, Bol Bol & Bamba. Which of these players are part of the long term future and why are they?

I like WCJ (rebounding, scoring, and defense) and Wagner (energy, shooting). I want JI back.

Outside of Wemby and Scoot. Which player would like from draft with your pick (Top 5) and Bulls pick? (Lottery)

I don’t watch college ball. I don’t know the players. But whoever can actually score and don’t need to be set up, I want him.

Mosley has never coached a fully healthy team. Yes, he makes some head scratching moves but I can’t really judge him. This is his first head coaching gig and I am not going to knock a person who is learning as well. We did that to Jacque Vaughn, these coaches need time and experience.

Good questions. Welcome. Here are my thoughts on your questions.

1. As the season goes Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero have clearly established themselves as the foundation of this squad. As good as Paolo has been, I currently view Franz as the best player on the squad. Both are future all star level guys.

2. Jalen Suggs was improving when he’s been on the court this year, even making a game winner for us. But he’s got to get his health back. He’s definitely got a ball hawk mentality on D and Marcus Smart is a good comparison as another pointed out.

The thing about Cole, Markelle and Suggs is they each do one thing exceptionally well that we really need 1 or 2 points guards to do, not 3. I expect the Magic will look for perhaps a Scoot Henderson to get some finality at the point guard spot. I think Markelle has the best shot of sticking around if he stays healthy.

As for the bigs…WCJ is the clear cut best. Now Wagners quickly establishing himself as valuable. I see Bamba being moved to give Issac his minutes among his return. Bol is a keeper but I think he’s got a lot of work to do to evolve past what he is now.

I think Scoot Henderson is who I’d like to see the Magic draft, but a good 2 guard prospect would be useful as well.

Lastly, I think Jamahl Mosely has done an ok job, and will likely improve.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

Good questions.

1. Paolo is on pace to have an all-time top 30 rookie season. Incredibly happy with him. Franz is one of the best sophomores. Long-term I think of Paolo as a bigger Paul Pierce, and Franz as a better Hedo. 1st and 2nd options on a contender.

2. Suggs seems ok but the injuries have made it hard to assess. Maybe like an Avery Bradley type in the long-run.

3. Cole Anthony is a sparkplug player, I could see his upside as a Mo Williams type guard. Fultz is a grinder that tries to make the right play and hustles but has some major limitations that will likely prevent him from ever reaching stardom. He statistically reminds me of an old school Gary Grant. The jury is still out on both players and their long-term fit.

4. I think WCJ is like a stronger, less agile Lamar Odom. I love his game and think he absolutely fits in the long-term plans. Mo Wagner reminds me of a poor mans Paul Millsap. Probably a keeper but not someone you lose sleep over. Bol Bol is hard to understand, still very much a project. Good advanced stats but an awkward fit. Bamba is probably the ideal compliment to WCJ as he brings some decent defense but he lacks heart. I'd prefer to look for a quick center somewhere else and move on.

5. Brandon Miller and Anthony Black

6. I think Mosley is doing an amazing job. I grade him positively for player development and winning on the backs of rookie contracts. Our veterans do suck though so I'm not sure how much credit he actually deserves but still I like him.

1)Wagner is a winning player and has an elite skill, could be the best in all of nba at cutting and could be a good defender and a good spot-up shooter even at higher level imho.
He could be at peak 3-4 option on a contender doing what wiggins did last year, with some differences,he is the type of player any good team wants, perfect to be a complement to 2 all stars.

2)Some progress(well he had one of the worse season ever last year, with no progress would be killian hayes, lol)but still bad on offense and incredibly prone to injuries.
Long term could be a defensive specialist from the bench.

3)Fultz is a miracle is still playing, just love for him, whatever happens.Anthony is a chucker who should be kept far from any team who wants to play winning basketball, toxic presence on the floor.

4)Carter is better than people think, solid mid-level nba starter at C,problem is not healthy enough.Others 3 should be trade-meat.

5)no one at all, trade the picks and everything you can for whatever good player can get who can make winning games now and going to playoff sooner than later.

6)not an offensive mastermind for sure.that said nice guy, knows how to build a competent defense, still hard to judge with the lack of offensive talent this team has.

Yeah...I'm off that train. I've been defending and rooting for his, "You'll see. TRoss has a lot left in the tank. He's just not down with tanking" revival. I was wrong.

He might just be over. Expiring filler for the big trade to come

I'm with you on that one bc he's our current best player BUT how awesome would we be if he were the 3rd best option or 5th if we're playing this game? We'd have a dynasty with 5 all stars.

#1 - Paolo has been great. some people forget he is a rookie, so he is going to make mistakes and learn from them. Franz having a great 2nd season. could they be legit #1 and #2 options for a team? absolutely. will they? hopefully they continue to work hard.

#2 - Suggs offense is still a work in progress and he cannot stay healthy. not fully sure if its his playing style or what, but he has to learn to stay healthy and get out there on the court. His shooting is really bad, his defense is very good. also needs to work on his handle.

#3 - not a believer in Fultz. seems more a backup PG. seems to have a good attitude (getting overpaid $50mil will do that imo) but seems like a borderline starter/backup PG unless he can fix his bad outside shooting. Anthony is a great team guy off the court, on the court he seems to feel he is a star at SG. i will say, he seems to be playing more in control this year. probably best suited as offensive minded backup PG, not sure his ego would handle that.

#4 - WCJ the best of the big men and on a good $$ deal, but CANNOT stay healthy. if he was required in a trade to upgrade, i wouldnt have a problem using him. He is not that special at center that we couldnt figure it out. Bamba seems to have all the tools except motivation to carve out at a 3 pt shooting/shot blocking center. Most likely going to take being on another team for it to click, just doesnt seem to be happening here. Wagner is an energy 3rd big, can take him or leave him. Bol Bol has been great for what he cost this year and next. Still very young in his nba career due to injuries. But when you look deeper, not the best defender, is a black hole on offense and has trouble in the half court set. By all means i would keep him for next year to see how he continues to develop.

#5 - we have to upgrade at PG and SG. Brandon Miller has been great, would be interesting to see if he and Franz could figure out how to play SG/SF together. that would be ideal for me. next would be Black. Gradey Dick would be good choice too.

#6 - not sure on Mosely, but as others have mentioned, he has been working with a walking MASH unit. so many people out injured. Also, Mgmt hasnt addressed problems with the roster, we have no outside shooting.

#1- Paolo and Franz ARE the primary and secondary options in Orlando. They are capable in only their rookie and second years as starters. People view them similarly to Boston in Tatum & Brown. The only issue with that is that neither are as good defensively yet.

#2- Suggs is one of the only elite defensive players on this roster. The problem is that he’s injured a lot of the time because of his reckless style of play. I’d say the fan base is 50/50 on him. Personally, I’d like to see him eventually become Orlando’s starting point guard if he can stay healthy and develop a better shot. He finds ways to win basketball games as unselfishly as possible.

#3- Cole Anthony is a streaky player. One game he’s on fire and the next he’s a dumpster fire. He’s probably best suited as a sixth man off the bench, but he believes he’s a starting point guard. Similar to Suggs, people are 50/50 on Fultz. He’s in year 6 of his career and hasn’t really developed his glaring weaknesses. His contract makes him a likely trade candidate. Nothing he does says he’s one of the 30 best point guards suited as a starter in the league.

#4- WCJ is likely the starting C on this roster. His contract is amazing for what he provides. However, he is another guy who is always injured. Bol is the biggest story of this season aside from Paolo, but nobody knows how he fits in the lineup. I’m curious what his trade value would be, but I’d probably end up retaining him for lack of bench options. Bamba is the odd man out and should be moved. Moe is just a guy, but he makes a lot of hustle plays and gets under opponent’s skin.

#5 - Scoot is who makes the most sense. Outside of him or Wemby I’d say K George or Anthony Black. Basically a swingman/ guard that can actually shoot the basketball, defend, and do other things off the ball to take pressure off Franz and Paolo. Not a fan of big guards that cannot shoot or Forwards/Bigs that further complicate the ridiculously annoying lineup changes Mosely throws out sometimes.

#6 - Mosely is fine. He has questionable lineups and for some reason doesn’t stagger minutes with Franz and Paolo. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not around when/if Orlando becomes a serious playoff team. He’s been good for the rebuild and will likely be better when the FO makes a trade or three.

My pov.

1. Franz is one of the smartest players in the NBA already, at a very tender age. I wouldn't put a ceiling on how good he can be, though he has certain athletic limitations. At worst i see him as a No 2 option on a contender, who can defend 2-4 comfortably.

Paolo is a PG in a center's body and for that reason alone the possibilities for him are similarly dizzying. His footwork is that of a player half his size and he has a ton of craft in the paint. For the moment his fundamental skill is drawing fouls as he drives, but he can build an extensive NBA game on top of that foundation. All Star looks very achievable.

Cornerstone player on a contender? Well, that takes me to my point on both Paolo and Franz. Neither is showing that star/leader mentality. I wouldn't call either passive and being that way doesn't mean they can't be great, but - imo - they need to be surrounded by some strong personalities.

Not wanting to rely on PER as a reliable stat, but most Magic players have PERs st or above the league-average score of 15. And yet, they get hosed by a nothing-special Wizards team missing Beal. There is talent, but due to youth and mentality, they are very naĂ¯ve and at times crazily submissive. Paolo and Franz are as culpable as anyone.

2) Suggs plays with such reckless abandon - maybe his way of making up for some skills limitations - that he can't stay on the court for long. When he does play, his handle, playmaking and shooting all show deficiencies. Is he improving? Possibly, but what's the point if he's not available? What he does have is exactly that alpha/leader mentality that the Magic needs, but it's not married with either craft or experience, which we need just as much.

Long term he can be Jevon Carter at the low end and Smart as his ceiling. Defence-first combo guard with leadership traits.

3) Neither Fultz not Anthony are players you should be making any concrete plans around. They don't have what we need from a PG, which is PnR craft, defence and above avg 3pt% to allow them have an off ball role when Franz or Paolo have it and to space.

4) The lack of dog and craftiness is evident again with our bigs. WCJ is prob a keeper, but isn't the dominating type - he's a jack of all trades at a decent level on a good contract and still v young.

Bamba is one of the big what-ifs in pro sport . However, he doesn't seem to care and you can't have a successful team with 20% of it twiddling their thumbs.
Bol has an elite shooting/finishing touch and frankly not a ton else. But for the ridiculously low money he's costing, he's worth keeping or trading his undoubted positive value.

5) My feeling is that this team will drown without a playoff-tested leader for our roster of talented followers to rally around. We also need an elite shooter who can defend at least competently.

Maybe the shooter can be the leader figure and you can draft a PG or vice versa. But I've been vocal on here that FVV would be an ideal trade target and I'm happy putting a draft pick into the mix to get him.

If we did end up using a high lottery pick on a player, I'd love to see Amen on the Magic. He is 100% alpha and a potential generational talent.

6) Mose seems a good guy and the players listen to him. But he doesn't strike me - yet anyway - as a coach to be figuring into your long term plans.

FVV will be 29 and i guarantee will use his option to get out for a new long contract. you would want to use a draft pick for a couple of months of him? when you can just bid in the offseason? seems like a waste of a pick

Well, we beat the Raptors back to back, so the pitch of making him the leader who brings this talented group to the playoffs would hopefully not fall on deaf ears. Obviously, the contract influences what you would offer, but you're paying to jump the queue and sell a new mutual deal to the player before he hits the market.

EliteSmarts wrote:Hello Magic fans.

6. Mosely has done great considering the expectations.

umm what?

I believe he will be like Hayward we could agree to disagree.

1) Everything a person could hope for and more. F. Wagner has developed into a legit 3rd option on a good team and he is only in his second year. Paolo, is also about the same depending on the day. Which is amazing value when you consider he is a freshman. I imagine they will be our 1/2 punch going forward. Paulo seems to be the long term better 1st option with Franz being legitimately just as good. The fact that right now Paulo can pound the ball and Franz is a good do everything type has us feeling very hopeful.

2) Suggs has been too injured.

3) If Suggs were back I would have a bigger opinion. Don't care at the moment for Anthony or Fultz.

4) WCJ I think is our long term guy. The rest take or leave with Bamba being dead last in my preference.

5) Assuming we get a top 5, I don't know. Hopefully we get a pair of guards, be it point guard, sg, flex G as what I am seeing here I would rather UCFjaybird be signed into a 10 day contract and pushed into PG as I think he has a better 3pt shot.

6) He seems like the coach you have when you are rebuilding but not when you are contending.

I will only comment about Paolo and Franz: I think they are two dynamic forwards with size and skill that will make the Magic title contenders in two years. You can't teach their advanced skill set and Paolo's ability to draw fouls is elite and the key to potential contention.

I love Franz, but him as the best player on this team is bonkers. If that’s the case this team is in trouble. A number 2 in a championship is hall of fame worthy generally. I agree Franz has already proved himself and has good instincts and BB iq. The question to me is how much better can he get. I think he will continue to improve and he will get crafty. Just not sure he has a super high peak.

We really need to hope Suggs hits his potential outcomes, which is a good bit higher than Smart. If not Suggs then one of this years picks. Really want Franz to be third option on a potential championship team. Either that or then like a 1a in Paolo and then 3 strong starters. Sort of like Milwaukee with Giannis and then (Holiday/Middleton/Lopez)
