Game 36: Sixers vs Pels - New year, new Sixers?

Post#1 » by Sixercise » Sun Jan 1, 2023 11:05 pm

Welcome to 2023, one and all! With a new year, you'd hope that there would be a fresh outlook on tightening rotations and figuring out offensive/defensive schemes...wait, I forgot who our coach is... :noway:

Anywho, it's good that we're getting another crack at the best team in the West while we're home. Even if we don't win, there are several things I'd like to see more of:

- More Embeard PnR type stuff in crunchtime; aggravating that we shy away from that down the stretch
- More Shake + Niang with the starters
- MORE BOXING OUT
- More Tobias fastbreaks

And less of this:

- Less Point Embiid hero ball BS
- Less PJ, period
- Less jumpshooter fouling
- Less standing around when Embiid has the ball on the key/wing
- WAY LESS derp derp live ball turnovers

No more all bench lineups.. Need to have one of Harden or Embiid in there.

It will only depend on what Zion does, he is the only player with comparable or even higher talent than Embiid.

How can Zion be this dominant while having JV in the paint?

I think it’s a combo of his physical gifts allowing him to finish around the rim so effectively and teams haven’t figured out how to guard him. He’s the type of physical mismatch that will require some sort of defensive innovation or philosophy shift.

I’ll be fascinated to see how teams defend him in the playoffs.

Jazz beat them twice. And i watched both games. All they did is put Olynyk on him with Walker Kessler at the weakside. Milwaukee also did the same thing, with Brolo at the weakside. Pels lose twice against Jazz and while Bucks were able to slow down Zion

Why does Embiid needs more spacing than Zion? Embiid scoring is more perimeter oriented.

Zion is just dominant period. Works incredibly well with scorers, jump shooters, midrange volume players, 3+D guards, 3+D wings. He’ll go down as the GOAT finisher yes better than Barkley, Jordan, Shaq, Lebron, Giannis.

He has more velocity and power (he’s as dense as concrete starting from the neck onwards but as fluid as a gymnast), and less space to get a hand on it. The dude is about 6 feet on the crouch run up before he unloads up lmao, and he has the width of a small boat so trying to get steals against him ain’t gonna work.

Helps that JV is a huge human and a very good screener (Embiid take notes lol).

The big question, and it was reflected in his Pels contract that is so loaded with incentives based on availability, will be his health. Zion is a freak of nature - humans that big aren't supposed to be able to run and jump like that and have that kind of flexibility of movement. He may end up being exactly what you say, but can he stay on the court enough to do it?

Well from a physics standpoint it makes zero sense. Because his physical profile work at opposite ends of the spectrum. The only sort of discipline that has both are class gymnasts but they weigh much lighter and are short arses for the most part (huge body morphism at a very early age which is an ethical problem but I digress) Basically every gymnast that’s elite would be taller if not for yeeting themselves 10 feet in the air as a kid lol. Men are more affected specifically boys as they are stronger biology wise, more pressure, whereas girls are actually taller up until a certain age, less pressure, more flexibility.

It’s like having a Mack truck that has the handling of a sports car, it doesn’t make any sense when you watch it live. You can have one or the other but you can’t have both. Heck even Lebron ain’t as fluid as Zion. It’s like a PF Wade but at 280 pounds!

He isn’t running at full capacity (you only get glimpses such as the Raptors and Timberwolves games) and incorporating what needs to be done vs doing dangerous things time and again (see Rose who brought all of his injuries into himself through poor functionality on landings).

God help the league if College Zion mixed in with 4 years of NBA was here right now.

I think he can have a medium longevity career outlook while being a perennial MVP candidate.

Interesting to note how Giannis will far after his athletic decline. He’s taking less explosive euro steps which at his size and frame should have been a no no right from the jump.

Here’s the video on the physics of Zion on ESPN.

Vert record for a 280 pound bowling ball is literally one of a kind. They’ve already done the pressure measurements and it’s quite literally off the scales.

No downing the other greats but Zion clears Shaq, Lebron, Jordan on the explosive/strength/high end spectrums pre NBA. The other 4 still had growing to do.

I repeat Zion was a 6”6 260+ pound forward doing 360 dunks as a high schooler lol.

Both guys would benefit from having as much floor spacing as possible around them.

Zion has only spent about half his minutes with JV, and JV has been shooting more 3s during those minutes.

It's not like Jo wasn't still a dominant player while he had Ben here.

I'm kinda surprised the Pelicans didn't push in some of their assets for Myles Turner when his name was out there. Not sure he's still available now that the Pacers have played some good ball, but a more willing shooter that's a pretty elite shot blocker feels like an obvious fit next to Zion.

Embiid is questionable. I hope he plays , play more Tisse on Cj and Tobi/Reed on Zion. Hope Maxey can get in to rhythm.

We're entering the best of times, gentlemen. Kudos to Doc for seeing an opportunity to maximize Harden and Maxey if he keeps doing this.

Don't worry about Maxey, a Sixers fan on GB thinks we should only trade him for a superstar like Doncic or Durant, we are set!
