Game Thread: Hawks @ Warriors -- 1/2/23

Warriors take on Trae Young’s Hawks in Chase Center

Image

The reigning, defending, undisputed, heavyweight champions of the NBA world are back at it to start the new year. This time those Golden State Warriors will be continuing their title defense against the Atlanta Hawks.

Remember when the Hawks were supposed to be Warriors East? They hired Travis Schlenk, a former assistant general manager with the Warriors, to be their architect of their franchise. Four years later, the Hawks still haven’t won a damn thing and Schlenk is moving to an advisory role. Meanwhile the Warriors have gone from champs to bottom feeders to world champions again in Schlenk’s tenure with Atlanta. Currently the Hawks have a 17-19 record, trying to find some momentum.

In their most recent loss, they were felled by LeBron James on his birthday, 130-121.Meanwhile the Warriors have finally climbed above .500 to a 19-18 record, powered by their 16-2 record at home in the Chase Center of San Francisco. That’s where they’ll be inviting the Hawks Monday night. The Dubs are on a four game winning streak (without All-Stars Stephen Curry or Andrew Wiggins), ending 2022 on a bright note.

Take the warriors, not because of the hawks sucking, but a favorable point spread.
Where the offseason has more buzz happens.

Hawks are 1 for 9 from three.
Trae is 1 for 2.

Game tied at 95-95 after three quarters. I was not expecting that sooner in the game but it's great to them coming back.
Keep the effort in the 4th quarter!

Why is John Collins attempting 5 three pointers? Nothing justifies him having that many attempts per game.

AJ Griffin to me needs more minutes and consistent minutes.

Trae once again is awful. 8 of 22 and 3 of 10 from 3. He is looking for contact all the time. Multiple iso drivew into the lane where he looks for contact and throws the ball up. They changed the rules yet he is not adapting. He has made major regressions this year.

Believe it or not, but many Hawk fans don't mind is poor shooting, and don't believe Trae is the problem. Blows my mind

Once again the 5 minute late game prevent offense our guards (Trae/DJ/Bogi) doomed us. We stopped doing what got us back in the game.

Meanwhile Collins was on the bench the last 6+ minutes of the 4th quarter.

I'd be curious to know who decides such a thing. Trae was doing it already last season, it was driving me crazy that once they had a lead, he let the ball roll, take 8s to get on opponent half court,... while they failed most of this offensive plays in the end.

I've never seen such a thing repeated so much without any reaction from anybody. If it's him deciding this, Nate should scream to push the ball, but it also seems he's afraid if saying anything.
If it's Nate deciding this, we should see the players realizing it's stupid and push the ball, or talking more with Nate at the following time out.
It's incredible, never saw something like this, no communication at all during the game.

Yeah, because they just look at Pts/Ast/rbd per game.
Never checked that his 2pts%, 3pts% have never been so low. His Net rating is not good, and even worst for a Super Max guy.

Among PG, he was second last season in ESPN RPM at 6.95, behind Curry at 9.48 and ahead of Paul at 6.66 and Doncic at 6.50
This season, Doncic is 1st at 9.36, then Curry at 6.46, Haliburton at 5.76, Morant at 5.46,... and Trae is 13th at 2.55

Nate is only animated when the team makes defensive mistakes. He'll call timeouts and pull players for those. But on offense he is mum - he has a 'they should figure it out attitude.' I think that is because he depends on the 'stars' to run the show.
This applies to our Hawks:

That's right, I'm so focus on him not doing anything on offense that I even forgot that he's calling time out when the defense doesn't work like he hopes to.

I stopped watching this game in the middle of the 4th quarter thinking they had understood how to win this game.
Today, watching the replay, I was :noway:
