i didn't get through the whole thing, but i liked a bunch of the music on there so far. song at the ~14:55 mark is my favorite so far.

i love when musicians go across genres. i could easily see a band like Stone Sour doing a version of this. Corey Taylor has such a singing range (5 1/2 octaves). i remember i wanted to do the song, Family Affair, as a cover with one of my bands back in NY. Everyone loves that song, but our drummer wanted nothing to do with anything outside of 70s-80s metal

Family Affair by Sly and The Family Stone is a tremendous song. The drummer wouldn’t do this song? Did you find another drummer? Since when do drummers decide what songs the band does?

Do you still play?

lol no, Family Affair by Mary J Blige - i'm sure very different songs.

well i was the last guy who joined the group - they were all HS buddies, and in their late 40s and early 50s - i'm mid 30s. he and the singer just wanted to play songs they knew and from their time; the bassist and i were more experimental and wanted to try different things outside of our normal realm.

the bassist actually turned me onto the band Ghost, which is the perfect offspring of ABBA (music) and Black Sabbath (lyrical). now i'm a big fan.

i just play on my own til i can find other people who play. i've lost a lot of my speed and skill now that i don't play as often

Ghost has a generous amount of Scorpions too. Singer definitely influenced. Their videos are badass.

yeah they do. tobias said he's mostly influenced by motley crue; i can hear it in their heavier songs.

the ABBA + black sabbath thing is something i came up with to describe them. had my dad listen to them, as he is a big ABBA, bowie, Heart fan.

the music is so catchy, but the lyrics are really dark.

i love the Rats music video. Dance Macabre is my favorite song, also a cool video. the one dancer was so hot to me, i creeped out and followed her on instagram, back when i had it. Kelly Smetakova.

love their new song, Mary on a Cross

a bit off topic, but have you ever seen Larry Graham tell the story about how he came up with the bass slap?

This is one of the videos that made me want to pick up the guitar, i was mesmerized by this for some reason.

yeah, I'm learning to play electric guitar right now. Mainly via YouTube tutorials though.

I'm not very good, and carpal tunnel severely limits how long I can practice in one sitting before the pain and numbness set in, but i'm trying to be patient with myself and not be discouraged.

Nice. What electric guitar are you playing? Did you get it set up properly? Lowering the action (getting a proper setup) will make your guitar easier to play and, hopefully, give you more playing time.

I have a Pyle Six string that i got off of Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Electric-Guitar-Amp-Kit/dp/B09F6VMFLG

I figured i might as well go with a beginner set up :-?

I'm not sure if I set it up properly outside of tuning it tbh. Any tips or advice will be super appreciated

If you bought it at a music store, take it back to the them and tell them you need a “set up” and ask them to lower the action.

Also, does the guitar stay in tune after you’ve played it for a while or are you always retuning it? If the guitar doesn’t stay in tune, it’s worthless and you should return it.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions. I don’t have all the answers but I’ve been playing for awhile.

Jeff is probably the best/most versatile guitarist from his era. Very creative. He could play any genre. Definitely a kick in the gut when I read that this afternoon. Sad.

I have a connect at music store near me, I will ask if they can assist with a set up. I can't believe I've been doing this without having that done  :banghead:

As for the guitar, I've had to retune it more than few times yeah, so i think i need to upgrade. Do you have any brand recommendations?

Thanks so much for the feedback

I would check out the Fender Squier series of guitars. I like the Classic Vibe series. If you’re more into metal music, you might want to check out Ibanez guitars.

You can also go onto YT and search for “best electric guitars under $500”. Darrell Braun Guitars is an excellent channel for guitar reviews.

No disrespect but that guitar you’re playing now is a piece of crap.

The low end guitar market - with the exception of the guitar/amp Mr. Bill bought :D - has improved dramatically over recent years.

Oh yeah, I have a low-end Les Paul ripoff myself, and it is awesome, but these all-in one guitar packs are made for children, who are forced to learn guitar by their parents, but have no enthusiasm to learn it themselves.

i do actually agree with gavran, as an adult player, though.

if you do want to start, it's best to get a guitar that is at least a $300+. you don't need an $800+. i did get a $100 guitar as a steal, as the store didn't realize what they had.

it's a Jackson Randy Rhoads V-Wing; I had it assessed by a guitar pro, and it's worth $500+, but they didn't realize what they had; it was a Guitar Center, and the guy behind the register said they just got it in and it hadn't been processed yet, so he said $100 would be fine.

i'd rather go with a good, used guitar (gibson) as a first one for $300 than a cheap, knock-off. they go out of tune a lot, and just sound terrible. they're hard to play.

i'm also partial to Jackson, as i'm a big Randy Rhoads fan; as well as Gibson, as i Toni Iommi is who got me into guitar, with the Gibson SG.
