Re: Trade ideas
With THJ you know that when you kick him the ball that he’s going to take the shot.
My issue with Caris is that you rarely know whether he’ll just take the shot or he’ll pull it down and dribble for 15 seconds before putting up a lower percentage shot or passing someone into a tough position.
He works fine when he’s a primary or secondary ball handler; but when Mitchell and Garland are on the floor; Caris should not be handling the ball. That situation gets worse when Rubio returns and he pushes Caris down.
That said, he’s instant offense when needed. Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams, etc. come to mind. It’s a valuable role on the team… if and when he’s willing to fill it. Similar to the conversation we had about Sexton, albeit a better and more flexible player.
Caris for THJ though? I want to get paid. Caris is the better player in the better money. If not, then I’d shoot my shot on Gordon Hayward and deal with the league’s biggest expiring next year.

We could REALLY use a shooter like THJ. Without wading into how skilled LeVert actually is, the Cavs need for more shooters is palpable. If you have a need for a particular skill set, then the net impact on the team is worth considering.
Whether THJ will waive his kicker will provide a good indication as to how excited he'd be to get traded here. In terms of compensation, we could ask for swap rights in 2026/28 which would help mitigate the risk of the Mitchell trade and which the Mavs might find more palatable.
Having said all of that, they need to be close to 100% sure about where THJ is coming of that injury.
Other than the fact he's going on 34, Bojan Bogdanovic fits the profile better. I wonder how well THJ will shoot when he's not playing with Luka and he lacks the kind of length/defensive ability we need.
If we actually believe Wade (and maybe even Windler) will return soon, it's possible Altman has other priorities than trying to find the best 3&d SF he can get his hands on for cheap.
The Cavs are going to get outbid on Bogs. Someone is coughing up a first. The way we're defended, I actually think THJ will get more open looks here than in Dallas.
Thinking about screwing around and implementing a really capricious rule about mentioning Windler's name until he's managed to play in 20 consecutive games.
While He Who Shall Not Be Played is not active, his contract sure is. He has a $4 mil expiring deal. I propose an exception to this when mentioned only for salary purposes.

Hey, he's only been out 3 months with a sprained ankle!
Disappointed we haven't gotten the 2 weeks of "let's see if Windler can be the starting 3" that instead were given to Lamar Stevens.

Or rather, Dean Wade or Okoro or Stevens or Osman all have a chance of outplaying anyone whom we could obtain.
I don't see THJ as a clear cut above any of those guys, especially when he's shooting a lower percentage than LeVert.
Bojan? Too expensive. Hayward? Too much bad salary. Bey? Not close to a guy you can play in the playoffs. Oubre? Blah. Crowder? Lots of reasons to pass. McDermott? No D. Kennard? Too short.
My ideal trade would just be with Dallas for Bullock + Kleber. A stretch big that can hang in the playoffs on D would be huge. Bullock is just another generic wing but he's seen the playoffs and can step in if the moment is too big for the stable of young guys we have.
THJ is a better outside shooter than LeVert period. There are reasons not to make the trade, but LeVert managing to shoot well above his career average from 3 isn't one of them. THJ averages a lot of 3 point attempts, and converts enough of them that it's too dangerous to leave him open, which is exactly what the Cavs need to unlock their offense.
The thing is THJ shot 34.1% on his 3pters in NYK and 37.3% in DAL when playing with Luka, so which THJ do we get if he's playing with the second unit off the bench and/or how is our defense compromised if we're starting him at SF?
Tim's 6'7" wingspan is an inch less than Isaac and 3" less than Caris, so that's no step forward and he's not known for his defense.
Caris has been shooting 35.1% on his 3pters as a Cav, so he's seen a bump up over his previous stops too.
Does Tim actually shoot any better on open shots than Caris?
We have the NBA tracking data, and they both shoot 40% on wide open 3's. Caris is even a little better on open 3's at 34%. Tim takes more tight 3's than Caris (who basically takes none) and actually shoots them well at 45%. Is that something we want?
IMO, we'd be better off if we could somehow clone Dean Wade so we'd have some confidence that we could have a very good shooter on open 3's with length that plays defense at the SF spot.
Dallas being willing to trade Tim even though he's been helping them win games lately seems like a red flag to me that he's just another guy who isn't worth having on the floor when he's not on fire from 3pt. Why not just trust Cedi more, especially when we get Ricky back? He provides the same kind of spark for our team with seemingly not as many liabilities as THJ.
In conclusion, we have no business trading for THJ straight up for Caris. He's not even expiring next season. If Dallas wants to send picks or other players back to us, we can judge the deal on that.

This is such an excellent point. Judging Caris by his three point numbers for half a season is dubious to start of with, but you really need to factor in the number if times he's open, pulls the ball down, and drives into a crowded paint, because that's precisely what opponents do when they leave him open.

Agreed on the tax. That’s paramount because they are going to blow through, and once they do, there is no going back.
No doubt it’s less comfortable, but something around LeVert, He Who Shall Not be Named and either Cedi or Okoro work is solid framework; and pull an asset to clean up their cap.

Money wise it would work but the more I look at it, I'm good. If the Hornets were attaching an unprotected 1st, I'd have to consider it but the guy is so old, injury prone, overpaid, and statistically the opposite of a 3&D wing, not worth it. I'd rather stand pat, tbh.KuruptedCav wrote:JujitsuFlip wrote:Getting Hayward seems tough with trying to avoid the tax this season and LeVert making $18 million vs Hayward's $30 million.KuruptedCav wrote:With THJ you know that when you kick him the ball that he’s going to take the shot.

That’s fair. I’d want an asset (and I’d want Hayward in a Love role on the wing and possibly traded next season).
I do have concern that they may let LeVert, Love, and He Who Shall Not be Named walk (rather than give them bad long-term deals) and we get stuck between not having cap space and not having tradable salaries.
$37 million in gap between the salary cap and the luxury tax is not where we should be in 2023/24. Okoro, Osman, Wade, Stevens and Rubio account for < $30million.
So some of the expiring money needs to be pushed forward. I can appreciate though that Hayward may not be that player. But I’d also rather not push it two years on a guy with THJ injury history.

No team with a bottom three record is trading an unprotected 1st. That's not a thing.

Maybe they're willing to pay Love this summer. If they utilize their full MLE and/or BAE, they will be hard capped though. They gave Love a 5 year extension the first time and a 4 year extension the second time. Maybe they offer a 1+1 this time given his age, role, and injury history. Salary would have to be modest.
1. Garland max deal
2. Mitchell max deal
3. Allen $20 million
4. Evan rookie deal
5. Okoro rookie deal
6. Rubio $6 million
7. Wade $6ish million
8. Stevens team option
9. MLE player
10. BAE player
11. 2023 2nd rounder
12. Love at about $20 million or so
13. Maybe Travers?

No way I'm paying Love anywhere near $20M to come off the bench. That’s crazy talk. In fact, I wouldn't even worry about maintaining his Bird rights. The Cavs have been extraordinarily generous with Kevin. If he wants one last bag, we should let him get it elsewhere. If he's willing to take less than market, there's a conversation to be had.

What's the alternative? It's the Tristan Thompson/JR Smith fiasco all over again. Cavs can either give Love $15 to $25 million to have the asset of essentially an expiring deal or the can offer someone else a vet min. Unless you want to give LeVert that $15 to $25 million 1+1, which I don't want to do that.jbk1234 wrote:JujitsuFlip wrote:I agree with everything you said.KuruptedCav wrote:That’s fair. The Cavs can't offer a big deal to a free agent because they have no cap space. Giving Love a large expiring is a no brianer to me.

The Cavs can't offer a big deal to a free agent because they have no cap space. Giving Love a large expiring is a no brianer to me.
Yeah, everything depends on our tax situation, but there's certainly a case to be made to pay Kevin either because we want him to retire as a Cavalier and set an example for the younger players ... or to leverage his contract somewhere down the line as trade filler.
Alas, they are kind of opposing tactics and I doubt Kev is going to sign a deal that makes it easy for us to trade him.
And of course he's injured again. It's great he's trying to play through it; but he's not valuable to us if he's not knocking down 3's.

Maybe they're willing to pay Love this summer. If they utilize their full MLE and/or BAE, they will be hard capped though. They gave Love a 5 year extension the first time and a 4 year extension the second time. Maybe they offer a 1+1 this time given his age, role, and injury history. Salary would have to be modest.
1. Garland max deal
2. Mitchell max deal
3. Allen $20 million
4. Evan rookie deal
5. Okoro rookie deal
6. Rubio $6 million
7. Wade $6ish million
8. Stevens team option
9. MLE player
10. BAE player
11. 2023 2nd rounder
12. Love at about $20 million or so
13. Maybe Travers?
14. Maybe Diop?
15. Vet min/leave open/Brobley

So the cap will be $134M maybe a little higher. If we pick up Cedi's option, we'll be at $124M plus the minimum cap holds. If we decline Cedi's option, we'll be at $116M. I'd like spend right upto the line, make a trade that puts us a little over, and then use the MLE.
But it's better to have options, and cap space to offer in trades, then to not have those things. Once you start down the road of paying guys more than market, under the theory that you cannot lose their production for nothing, you're limited to swapping bad contracts for bad contracts. The reality is that we can replace most of what Love and Levert bring at a fraction of the cost.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

What do people think K. Love's market is going to be? He'll be 35 before next season starts and father time is definitely taking his toll. No one is signing him with the idea of him starting. I'm skeptical he's offered more than the MLE. Is he even willing to sign with a rebuilding team after having lived through the Beilein/Sexton experience?

My assumption is that he doesn't go for much more than the vet min at this point.

Slightly above the MLE has always been the sweet spot, but whether Kevin's willing to accept that little when he's banked so much already in his career and got his ring is another matter. And of course he might choose to play for less in a more desirable location.
$20M/yr is what I'd ask for if I was Kevin ... and we're certainly free to part ways.
