Re: Grant Williams Thread
Grant is currently a bench player and a big part of his value is you don’t have to match 87 year old starter Al Horford to the number of minutes prime Giannis will play and lose much in the defensive matchup. You also don’t have to worry as much for a giant drop off defensively in the matchup if the starting player gets into foul trouble. Whether Grant would be a plus starter is another debate, but regardless of your opinion in that it doesn’t change his role now and that he excels in it as about the best you can expect out of a “Giannis stopper”. For the record I think we shouldn’t be just looking at shooting percentage when he’s guarded Giannis, but Giannis not even taking a shot considering the other offensive options they have (especially when Jrue sits and Middleton is out) is a success. It’s not all Grant, and it’s not all team-defense either.
I just wish he’d stop pumpfaking so much. Often times he should just shoot it. Maybe I’m just noticing the pump fakes more, but I feel like he doesn’t swing the ball as much as he did in the past and instead of a pump fake leading to a drive he should just move the ball to the next man and forget the whole sequence if he’s not open enough for a shot. I’m not saying every time, because there is value in his drives and it’s been a nice addition to his game, but sometimes those pump fakes drive me crazy.

So the breakdown I provide includes all Grant-Giannis matchups, whether Giannis took a shot or not.* My takeaway is that Grant did a pretty good job. Two jumpers made, one jumper missed, one layup missed, two fouls. The missed layup was something Giannis can and does make, but Grant moved his feet well to stay in front and did not foul. Giannis passed out a couple of times but each time he was being quad or pentuple teamed.
My point was never to put down Grant's defense that was actually played. Just trying to put it all into perspective. Grant was not the primary defender on Giannis, the actual results were pretty good for Giannis, and Giannis did worse when Grant was not guarding him.
*There was one that was kind of borderline that I didn't include where Giannis tried to get inside position on Grant during a second-chance possession, but no one seemed to be looking that way.

Re: Grant Williams Thread
Not sure how bird rights work but if we traded for Kuzma and we’re able to get bird rights to resign him next season I would try and get him.
I would try and trade Grant n Gallo and our best 2nd rd pick in this upcoming draft (I believe it’s possibly low 30’s)for Kuzma again only if we get his bird rights because otherwise I would keep Grant since we can go over the cap to keep him.
I like Grant but think he is definitely upgradable his antics with the refs for fouls and constant finger waving for replays is starting to get annoying, although he is a solid role player

Why would the Wizards do that trade?

Not saying they would but In a recent article Kuzma has said he is going to decline his player option for next season so he could essentially be a rental for this season if we didn’t get bird rights.
The wizards then get a 2nd that’s almost like 1st and Gallo for a season. Then they can overpay for Grant if they chose.
Or we can switch the 2nd for a future 1st if we get bird rights and can go over the cap to keep him

From what I've seen he doesn't have the strength to guard Giannis so he doesn't replace what Grant provides in that critical area. And he's a mediocre shooter which doesn't really fit the Cs offense. Not interested in making that swap.

Re: Grant Williams Thread
We have a late contender for typo of the year: Grant has worked to get better at "screaming actions".

Well, actually, it seems to date back to the offseason, and recently just was uncritically copied:

Grant isn't guarding Giannis and Giannis is going for back to back 40/20 games. Lol. First time since 1982, since the great Moses Malone.

Re: Grant Williams Thread
This guys has done nothing to up his game from what it was last year and that's always a bad sign. I just dont' see it with this guy. And I really liked where he was last year and thought he had a tremendous stepping off point to improve. But I just don't see it and that's a shame.
Oh perhaps I forgot perhaps he runs his **** mouth more, but that's about it.

Re: Grant Williams Thread
Another game where he's good on offense but absolutely demolished on defense. I don't know how long we can go on pretending Grant Williams is not only good but so good that he's the best in the league in playing Jokic or Giannis or whatever.

Re: Grant Williams Thread
I might have been too hard and too hasty on G. Williams and his progress from last year. I saw him do some things v. Nuggets that were.....different at least. So he has the ability to expand. So I'll reserve judgement on him for now.

Low usage, high efficiency. Doesn’t complain about his touches and role. I still wish they set him up more as a scorer — just run a couple of plays either as a spotup shooter or post up against smalls.

Q: These headshot plots are too easy to read, what can we do about it?
A: I got it. We'll add unnecessary circles around the heads and shrink the size of lesser data points to muck things up a bit.

At least use some kind of color gradient or other shapes to indicate FGA, like, 3-5 per game is a square, 5-10 is a circle, 10+ is a diamond..

Re: Grant Williams Thread
Anyway super-happy for Grant, I've been living island life about his offensive upside. Actually flashing a little more potential than I expected. He's somehow gotten agile enough and strong enough to attack close-outs, finish in the paint, and post up smaller defenders. Hooks, floaters, dunks.. If he keeps it up he's got to be at least a 16 million a year guy..

He's probably going to get a lot more than that.

If he’s leveled up and scores this well for the rest of the year I can see 17-18. Anything beyond that is an upside bet or a high bid from a cap space team.. I don’t think Presti wants to give him 20 million..
