Agreed. It's not even a question. The stats and the eye test show that Green is better, and more valuable than DJJ

This is bad news

I think there's one, and you live in it.

They are both great role players, but Green is the more impactful player. He has all intangibles and makes others guys on the floor play harder.

I would say Green is a better defender, shooter, rebounder, and finisher. Jones might have the edge in shot blocking but barely. Really what is Jones better at? He is taller but is stick thin so he gets pushed around. Keep in mind, I like Jones and think they can both be in the rotation.

Javonte always brings the intensity when he's on the floor. He's great for a minimum salary player. Get well soon.

You probably will need to dig pretty deep to figure out if DJJ is better than Javonte, but I think both guys are part of the "versatility" mantra that AKME operated under when they first put together this roster.

Both are energy guys
Both can defend 1-4 (whether they should is a different story)
Both can shoot it a bit. Javonte has the higher accuracy, but both are so low volume it doesn't really make that much of a difference
Both are undersized playing the 4
Their numbers are even identical

But the thing I'll say is when Javonte is out there, you'll notice him. He'll string together a couple high impact plays that can change the momentum of the game. Like a steal followed by a tomahawk poster alley oop from the free throw line. He almost single-handedly brought us back in that ORL game (if Vooch can just hit his FTs!).

When DJJ is out there, you worry that he's gonna break his wrist. There's a reason why there aren't 5 DJJs out there.

I've been working on analyzing defense, and I think you're right about Green, but I think DJJ might be better, just in less showy ways.

Green is pretty average when it comes to what I think of as the defending shots. His DFG% (the FG% of guys he the league identifies him as defending) is pretty close to the league average and so are his rates of contesting shots.

Where he's good is that disruptive defense. What I think of as defensive possession or non-shooting stats. He's well above average in deflections, steals, and loose balls.

Because of this, I think he sticks out.

DJJ on the other hand, is well above average in the defending shots segment of defense. He contests at a noticeably higher rate, and opponents make a lower percentage of shots against him. But, he doesn't collect the kinds of non-shooting defensive things that Green does.

Which is more important? I dunno, that's something I'm thinking through. They're both good, and a steal before the opponent even gets the shot off is the best option. But that only happens infrequently. Even the best players usually only get a couple steals a game. A guy who consistently makes his opponent shoot a slightly lower percentage (like DJJ) probably has a similar effect.

I think we really need him back. When we started the season hot last year he was a big part of it. Ball, Caruso, and J. Green would terrorize teams when they were on the floor together. They switched everything on D, got in guys face's, wouldn't let teams get in their sets, created turnovers that led to easy buckets. He is too small to be playing PF like he has been doing but the guy is just a winning basketball player.

I appreciate the analysis. This was my feeling watching the two of them play, but I didn't dive into those numbers.

I don't know if Billy is willing to put Terry in the rotation for any kind of minutes. I think this ends the Marko era as he needs to be released so they can bring in a forward who can play. Maybe that's some minor trade which I would think would bring back someone more able than a guy who has been working out at home all season.

I think the first name to come up will be Carmelo Anthony but I hope there are better options.

I just hope this somehow translates to Drummond getting more minutes...

:banghead:

Well, at least it means more of a sustained role for DJJ I suppose.

Way too much duplication on the roster, AK.

Our roster is stupid. I think we all know it as a fan base. The near universal agreement on this point is extremely unusual.

That said, here that stupid roster kinda helps because it created a scenario in which losing Javonte for more games doesn’t really mean anything.

Pretty much. I need some more data points (deadline and this offseason), but I’m starting to wonder if AK’s type is “Little Masai” wherein it’s the same archetype player…but smaller wherein you don’t get the rebounding, nor length, and you have lowered ability to effectively switch most anything.

I personally kinda dig the Masai thing. “Little Masai”…nah…not good.

This is the same type of surgery Lonzo had in September, right?

Sort of.

Arthroscopic describes how they go into the knee. Not what they do when they are in there or what your recovery time will be when they're done. With Lonzo's there was never any clear news about what happened inside except "they cleaned up some stuff", but that didn't appear to help him.

Curious what the "Green is better than DJJ" crowd thinks now after getting to see DJJ in a consistent role? I think he looks clearly better.

Has DJJ played well enough to start? This team thrived for half a season with Javonte as their main power forward. I mostly like what DJJ has been doing off the bench for past few weeks, but he doesn't raise the energy level of the team like Javonte does. Javonte is like a shot of nitrous oxide in the tank. Also, DJJ has no shot against any big who knows how to play physically. He's not strong enough.

That said, what's the point in debating between the two? They're both very valuable players considering their pay. I'd rather see both if them on the floor together sometimes vs Billy's overused 4 guard lineups. Especially since Drummond is about to get traded. (My hot take)

I find it hard to care. They are both 9th 10th man types with severe limitations. If the guys in front of them were better, sure.
