I think its a reasonable conclusion that PJ isn't worth 12 million a year and you can simply draft someone in the first round that would have better production within a year or two instead of wasting that money

We might disagree a little on the player lists, but the quoted portion is spot on and exactly what I have said for years now. Charlotte seems to always fall for the "We can't lose this solid player for nothing!" mentality and I hate it.

Is it fear of fan backlash? lack of FO foresight or capability?

Not sure, but extending the Zellers, Biyombos, PJs of the world get you nowhere but mediocre with no cap room for a long time.

Why extend a guy at anything other than a discount when he can be replaced by some second and third stringers on other teams for a fraction of the cost at little investment?

Is a guy like PJ going to put you over the edge to contention? No. Can they find a cheap/short term replacement for 14/5/2 on 40/31/80? Probably.

Keep rolling those dice. stop playing it safe (scared)

Thanks guys for your input on both PJ and Jalen. You have ALL made some quality points for both PJ and Jalen. Both players would be welcomed here for the right price tag.

Yeah we can just start Kai Jones. I am sure we won't notice a dropoff at all....

I love how you quoted his stats for this year even though he is significantly better than for his career.

You make it seem so easy to sign a FA better than PJ for a cheaper price. I mean I am sure Bobby Portis is dying to come play in Charlotte for less than the MLE. We should call him.

12 Million is basically nothing in todays NBA. Teams over the cap are handing out MLE money to guys they don't even think will play in a playoff series half the time.

The 6'9" forward out of San Diego State is averaging 10.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and one steal per game (all career bests) on 45.7% from the field, 37.4% from three, and a career-high 88.2% from the FT line through 37 games this season.

Jalen McDaniels has become a vital piece of Charlotte's young core that they should look to re-sign in the upcoming free agency.

Sadly he has been our 2nd best outside shooter outside of LaMelo this year.

Glad he has improved, just wish other guys were shooting up to their capabilities.

Story is Suns have interest in Jalen. I hope he signs with them if he does leave, due to them being one of my 3 favorite teams. Great team for him to potentially win a chip with and hopefully can excel with. I am not sure if Jalen can play BIG TIME BALL with a team like the Suns but maybe so. Carved out a good career for himself. What makes me so happy is he struggled so much in summer league when he was drafted. But found a way to be a nice veteran.

I think the Suns window has closed. Father time has caught CP3, I don't think Booker is that guy, and Ayton doesn't seem to be happy there.

I'm a bit confused as to why he isn't a restricted free agent. Is his current expiring contract his second contract or something?

I think Jalen is still on his 1st rookie deal which should expire at the end of this year.

From what I hear the Suns are trying to acquire him via trade.

Believe only 1st rounders become RFAs.

Solid role player who can play the 3 or 4 and still pretty young and improving. I dont see any reason to move him.

Agreed. If he was part of a larger deal that would bring us some quality back, perhaps. But I don’t think Jalen has played himself into a bigger next contract than we’d be interested in paying.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

you absolutely move him if you think he wont resign, wont resign at number we want, or think we need to prioritize pj.

i just dont see us resigning both pj and jalen. figure out now. trade the other.

if we cant get a deal we like, can we just kick the can down the road and see what happens in the off season?

we've developed him a ton, we deserve some reward

I think we can and should keep both. Jalen is solid depth considering the fact Gordon can't stay healthy. I don't think it's necessarily pick one or the other.

Point noted on if we think we can't resign him, though.

Gonna probably be hard to keep both Jalen and PJ especially since the Suns have shown interest That interest has probably raised Jalens market value... I felt that Jalen was gonna command a hire paycheck. I think we should keep whichever is more affordable between the two. I have them ranked fairly even in value.

Apparently....

"It depends on the player’s service time - any former first round pick on a four-year “rookie scale” contract becomes a restricted free agent when said deal expires, as do second round picks or undrafted players with three of fewer years in the league when theirs are completed. This is subject to the team making a “qualifying offer” of a new one-year contract worth either 125% of his previous salary or the veteran minimum plus $200K to the player by 1 October (this can be subsequently extended up until 1 March the following year). Any player on a two-way contract is also eligible for restricted free agency once the deal expires.

A restricted free agent can sign an offer sheet with any team (which must be for a minimum of two years), but his current team may retain the player’s services by matching the offer sheet within 3 days (known as the “right of first refusal”). If they chose not to do so, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent and may sign with any team he chooses. That also applies to any first round draftee whose initial team elects not to take up the 3rd or 4th year team option on the player’s initial deal.

Once a player has accrued four or more years of service time, they automatically become unrestricted free agents when their deals end."

Pretty silly of our front office not to originally give him a three year deal then.
