Re: 2023 Trade Rumors
Are you guys willing to part ways with Vanderbilt, Olynyk and Conley for Ayton? I think it’s a great trade for both teams as Jazz will get stronger becoming a solid top 5 nba team while suns need a pg and few players for rebounding purposes. It’s a win/win situation for both parties.

We don’t need him, we have Walker Kessler.
Ingles is cooked.

I think one primary issue with this offer is that Walker Kessler, who is 4th in the league in blocks in under 20mpg, has done this in his last 3 games as a starter:
31 min, 20 points, 9-13 FG, 21 reb, 4 ast, 0 stl, 2 blk
32 min, 15 points, 7-7 FG, 12 reb, 0 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk
27 min, 13 points, 5-6 FG, 9 reb, 0 ast, 2 stl, 7 blk
Season: 19.8 min, 7.5 ppg (12th among rookies), 71.7 FG% (1st among rookies), 7.2 rpg (2nd among rookies), 0.7 apg, 0.3 spg, 2.0 bpg (1st among rookies, 4th in the NBA)
While I'm not suggesting that Kessler is an All Star (and may never be one), I have a feeling that looking for a longer term center isn't on the Jazz's priority list, since Kessler is probably All-Rookie 1st or 2nd team, and right now this young man and Markkanen are the team's least touchable players. If Ayton was a more viable PF to pair with Lauri & Kessler, then maybe, but Ayton is a straight center. (Also, the salaries don't quite match and the Suns would need to add a touch of filler.) .... on the other hand, if the Suns add in any unprotected 1st round picks, who knows what Danny Ainge might do. lol (I'm mostly kidding.)

zero24gravity wrote:Just read this idea (not a rumor), elsewhere. Pretty sure it's written by a Laker fan (and not a Warrior fan, because they seem to get the worst of the deal, IMO), but I'll still dissect it a bit.
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton, Kevon Looney
Golden State Warriors Receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Talen Horton-Tucker
Utah Jazz Receive: Russell Westbrook, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL), 2029 First-Round Pick (LAL)
This is a definitive tank-trade-idea for the Jazz. It does land them a couple picks, but they are years away. Kuminga ('21 #7 pick) would add a nice young player to the Jazz front court. However, even with adding Moody ('21 #14 pick) to the team, this trade basically removed every guard on the team other than Conley & Beasley, which (even for a tank) seems pretty nuts, unless you believe the Jazz would actually keep/play Westbrook. (Bolmaro becomes a major contributor and the team has no 3rd ballhandler.)
PG: Conley, Bolmaro (Westbrook?)
SG: Beasley, Moody
SF: Markannen, Agbaji, Fontecchio, Juzang
PF: Kuminga, Gay, Potter (Olynyk could play here with Kessler)
C: Olynyk, Kessler, Azabuke
... it's pretty ugly, but would appease the tank-gods, I'm sure. More minutes for young guys, more losses on the horizon, and more picks (albeit not for 4+ years).
Even with this crazy trade, I wonder if the Jazz could crack the top 6 in the draft by the season's end.

We need a PGOTF I don't think Sexton is it. With the emergence (albeit a small sample size) of Abaji we have too many shooting guards. Who would you keep?
Sexton
Clarkson
Beasley

I think that there are legs to the two trade rumors of the Jazz involving the Cavs and Hawks.
It would would make sense for it to be combined into something along the lines of Beasely to Cavs, LaVert to Hawks and a Big to the Hawks and Collins to the Jazz (draft consideration a wild card). The Big could be Olynyk, Vando or from another team (e.g. Crowder or a Clipper).
If the Jazz trade for Collins, I think that they are doubling down on being good now vs a few years from now. In other words, a reload vs a rebuild. In that case, I have to wonder if they keep Conley, even if they have offers for him, both for a playoff run this year and as a mentor to perhaps the PGOTF next year. I don't think that Sexton is the PGOTF, but he might be a decent intermediate combo guard or even an expensive backup PG.

Hopefully we can draft the PG of the future in this upcoming draft. Guards I'd like to keep... Clarkson, Sexton, Agbaji. THT and NAW probably aren't really moveable unless included as salary filler in a deal. Beasley is too one-dimensional imo...Clarkson is way better, and has really come into his own. Clarkson/Beasley are probably very similar value as trade assets...I'm definitely moving Beasley first. Sexton is on a great value contract...I think his on-court production/potential is above that contract. Both Sexton/Clarkson are epic locker room vibe guys too...they just love to play ball.

That's a very good question. I actually meant to post a similar question to our board.
Value-wise, yes, I'd do that trade and if anything, I would say that is a very low asking price and that it heavily favors the Jazz. Having said that, the way Kessler has been playing complicates things. Obviously Ayton is a much better player at this point so the question is whether the Jazz are looking to compete sooner rather than later, and if they are willing to bring up Kessler slowly for the next 3 season behind Ayton. Before the season started I would have been all over this trade but now I'm much more hesitant.

Re: 2023 Trade Rumors
The Wolves join the Clippers as potentially interested in Mike?
https://www.si.com/fannation/bringmethesports/timberwolves/report-wolves-exploring-dangelo-russell-trades-interested-in-mike-conley-jr
https://dunkingwithwolves.com/2023/01/18/will-timberwolves-wheel-deal-1-pgs-deadline/
Salary-wise, a straight swap of Conley & Gay for Russell works, which would free up a lot of cap room next year. I don't see the Jazz re-signing Russell moving forward, so the Jazz could also involve a 3rd team, and use Russell's expiring deal to bring back something of value from a team looking for cap relief or who thinks Russell pushes them over the top this year.
I have to wonder if the Wolves have some regret about the Gobert trade and might want to get a pick back from the Jazz, just to save face a bit.
I also saw this rumor, saying the Jazz may have interest in Hachimura.
https://www.slcdunk.com/2023/1/18/23561727/trade-rumor-utah-jazz-interested-in-rui-hachimura-washington-wizards
The Wizards are floundering at 12th in the East with the 12th highest payroll in the league. Just for fun, I've combined these 2 trade rumors into one 3 team deal.
Wash gets: D. Russell (MN), Rudy Gay (UT), Bolmaro (UT), 2nd pick MN, 2nd pick UT
Utah gets: M. Morris (WAS), Hachimura (WAS), J. Davis (WAS)
Min gets: M. Conley (UT), W. Barton (WAS)
Wizards primarily do it for cap relief (assuming they don't keep Russell), as they move toward a rebuild/retool, and get a couple 2nd round picks for their trouble. Utah unloads the 2 contracts of their oldest players, getting back a serviceable PG and a decent rotation-big. T-Wolves get the vet PG they need, plus some much-needed wing-shooting (Barton), while getting away from Russell, who they reportedly don't want to (can't) re-sign. The Jazz may need to provide a little more (swap or highly protected pick?), but the bones of the idea seem pretty decent, IMO.

You wonder if the Wolves have some regrets about the Gobert trade? They have been cursing Tim Connelly's name for a while now. They are devastated, as they should be, because that trade wrecked both their present and their future.
As for the Conley-Russell trade, it's one that makes sense for them imho but there is no way in hell that we're the ones giving them picks. This trade is a gift for them since they want Russell gone and at the same time they'll lose him for nothing at the end of the season with no way to bring in a replacement at his level thanks to the Gobert trade that depleted them of tradable assets and bloated their payroll. By taking on Conley and guaranteeing his contract for next season, they get an extra season to try and get value for him, as well as the benefits of him running their offense.

I don't wonder if they have regret. I wonder if they would push for pick(s) back in any Jazz trade, as a result of that regret, whether it makes sense or not.
I don't disagree about your point, regarding picks and a potential trade of Russell/Conley. The only thing is, if they take Gay's 2 years as the filler needed to make a deal work, then that's a net-negative contract, and may require a small pick concession from the Jazz.

I'd imagine you're right about them pushing for picks but personally, I don't think they'll get picks of any significance, at least not FRP. I also don't think we need Russell, he'll be mostly a cap relief move. If the Wolves take Gay, I think the same thing that was said about Conley applies. It might be in their best interest for him to opt-in to his contract for next season and then they could use him, maybe in a package with Conley, in a trade for a player of significance. Together they amount to almost $31M next season so that's a good amount of cap relief for a team who's looking to rebuild, if they find one to do business with.

Rui Hachimura? 13 points a game
Hachimura, 24, is 6-foot-8 and was selected by the Wizards out of Gonzaga with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He is averaging 12.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 28 games this season, shooting a career-best .492 from the field.

Re: 2023 Trade Rumors
I could have never imagined the first week of Sept, when Donovan was traded, that the Jazz would still not only have Conley and Clarkson in mid-Jan but also potentially be considering keeping them past the trade deadline. Nor could I have imagined that the Jazz would not only be a playoff team, but have a chance to have homecourt for the first round. Yet, here we are.
The Jazz are tied for 6th in the Western Conference today, 3.5 games out of 3rd and 1.5 games away from not making the playoffs, but it just feels like the team has a better chance of being in the playoffs than not with the current roster.
If the Jazz were to trade away players in an attempt to tank today, having already 24 wins, it would be impossible to nearly impossible for them to be one of the worst 5 teams in the NBA (top 5 draft). Even if they traded away both Conley and Clarkson, it would be unlikely that they could lose enough games to be even in the top 8 of the draft. In a draft where there is a generational talent and a handful of other players that could likely be first overall in most drafts- sheesh!
They say the draft is deep, and given the uncertainty of the draft to begin with, particularly with players outside the top 6 selections, should the Jazz be buyers instead of sellers over the next few weeks?
Anyone else feel like the West is wide open this season?

Re: 2023 Trade Rumors
Locked on Wizards had seen trade scenarios involving Hachimura for Sexton . Ed Oliver (LOW) liked that ,Brandon Scott (LOW) wanted Hachimura/Wil Barton for Mike Conley preferring veteran Leadership over the combo guard Sexton.
Wizards biggest need is a quality PG .On a team with Beal,KP,Kuzma and Hachimura they rank near the bottom in the league in scoring and the offense is now running through 6'10" Kuzma.
Hachimura is a 3 level scorer but is forte is the midrange game. Rui Hachimura would look really good with Markkanen,Kessler,Sexton if they keep him .

I don't like the idea of trading for Hachimura. He is up for extension could pay him $10M-$15M for a guy who is probably an average bench player to a below average starter. I don't see him moving the needle to improving the team significantly or towards the direction of acquiring assets or young, promising players.

Re: 2023 Trade Rumors
I've been pondering the potential Collins trade for a few days, and I think that I am all in on it if all it costs is Beasely and Vando or Olynyk.
Should the Jazz give up Vando in the Collins deal? I would probably give up Olynyk over Vando just because Olynyk is nearly 32 and Vando is young and cheap and has some promise. If Olynyk is included, the Hawks would have to send a cheap contract, such as Kaminsky, back which would give some depth.
Collins, in one of his worst years this year, is arguably on par with Olynyk.
https://stathead.com/tiny/ZneJF
The primary differences are Collins is shooting the 3 horribly this year, but he has shot it consistently well in the past. Collins has always been a much better rebounder and rim protector than Olynyk. If Collins can revert back to his old self, then the Jazz have made a steal of a trade and have a scary good young frontcourt with a ton of versatility. Olynyk gives good versatility with Kessler and Markkanen, but I think that Collins could give them even more versatility, particularly given his rim protection.
The Jazz could then be a good PG away from having a very good, young starting 5 (and still have Sexton as a 6th man type). The Jazz could also potentially be pretty good in the playoffs this year.
The question is whether Collins has had an injury that has caused his regression, or if he is just not buying into the Hawks given their in-house issues and public desire over several years to trade him, or if he is a player that just wanted the bag and now that he has it his competitive flame has died. I haven't watched a ton of him, but would think that him being done with the Hawks and needing a fresh start is worth the risk, particularly at the low cost to acquire him right now.
Worst case is he plays as badly as this year, but he still is an overall ok player and the Jazz can afford his contract easily over the next few years as they would have difficulty dumping him (although they do have future draft picks to do it if necessary).
With Collins and JC resigning for an estimated $23M and still having Conley, the Jazz top 6 players would only be making about $110M.

Why would the Jazz want to help Minnesota improve their chances at a playoff run this year? The Jazz have their pick. Nothing would Make Jazz fans and Danny Ainge happier than Minnesota losing the remainder of their games.

$10-$15M per season is not terrible for a quality bench player. That's around what Clarkson is paid, and less than Sexton. And with the new CBA, it will be even more common. Every team has at least one bench player who makes that type of money. Hachimura isn't a terrible option to have for a bench player imho. Though I'd prefer if we somehow managed to trade for Avdija, as he is a very good defender and has a versatile skill-set and I think he could fit very well next to Kessler and Markkanen as a starter.
