This is a bad look for you, no matter what you're wearing. We NEEDED a good PG and a star player. We got a VERY GOOD (or better) PG and he has done for our team what no great scorer could have done. We now have the semblance of an offense, and we should expect it to continue improving.
We still need a great new piece, but we also did far better than expected with Jalen. There is no point in denying what he brings. Now if or when we get the additional star, we should be able to contend. Without JB, it would be a repeat of our sad history: MacAdoo, MyDyess, McDaniels, Melo, etc., etc., etc.
How is it a bad look?
He is a low-end All-Star, if he even makes the team. He'll likely be one of the last players selected by the coaches, assuming he makes the cut.
Brunson's a great piece to have but he's just not elite. Without an elite player, we'll be a treadmill team with a pretty low ceiling (first-round exit). This is what we need to take the next step. Brunson was a step in the right direction though.
The guy is very good, and he's working his butt off. He's giving us a lot more than we thought he would, and he's giving us a lot of what we needed. Now we're in the position where one large upgrade could put us into the mix. Before Brunson, we could have traded for almost anyone (except for a rare handful -- and they aren't available) and not won.
This was the right step, in the right order, and he doesn't seem to be a flash in the pan. It's really that your comment misses what many of us see as the main issue here. He may be a fringe allstar, but I recall that Frazier wasn't a perennial Allstar (he did make it 7 of his 16 seasons). Except we won with him. In 1973, we wouldn't have won without getting Earl Monroe, one guard he could never defend well. Yet many would say Frazier was our best PG ever.
There's a chance -- a chance -- that Brunson could play a similar role. It's really up to the FO to get us what else we need. But it's palpable that we're closer now than before.
