Would you give up a 1st + Payton Pritchard + Danilo Gallinari?
I imagine something like that might work for both sides.
Jacob is an UFA after the season but the Celtics would be acquiring his Bird rights in the deal. Not sure they'd be able to just sign him in the offseason, even though some team out there could, so that's part of the value I'd think for a team like the Celtics. Correct me if I'm wrong as I don't know the C's cap situation well, but most contenders like them don't really have the cap flexibility to just add good players in free agency.

I would do that. Not sure Spurs would. Seems like they want to keep him unless they're blown away by an offer and the pick we send would be a very late first.

Also it's not actually an option. Gallo was waived by the Spurs and I don't think the Celtics can't trade him back there this season.

I forgot about Gallo coming from the Spurs. Nice catch.
Idk if the Spurs would do that either of course, depends what they think of Pritchard, but in general my point was that the 2nd FRP could = a good, young player I'd think. Pritchard's value is probably around a non-lottery first, so asking for 2 FRPs (or equivalent value) isn't as crazy as many seem to think.
Based on how they negotiated the White trade, I think the point is they aren't taking on bad contracts AND giving up Jakob for just a late FRP, which I think is fair.
As we all know in the NBA it's just not as simple as Jakob's value = FRP so someone can get him for just that. I'd imagine none of the teams interested have the cap space to just absorb his contract, as he only makes sense for contenders really.
Would love to see him in Boston if he does get traded btw! Spurs fan currently living in Boston, so kinda started cheering for them as my Eastern Conference team once they acquired White (and Udoka, who I didn't know was a creep at the time, lol). He's a very solid center who's only real weakness is the FT%.

You don't open up negotiations with your final asking price. Are people this dumb?

It also sets up the other GM to look better to casuals/clickbait when the trade is completed -- "Spurs asked for 2, we got them down to 1"

But yeah, I highly doubt the Spurs seriously want 2 UPFRP for Jakob on an expiring, one is likely enough from the right team.

Mozgov was traded for 2 first rd picks as an expiring.

In 2015…Mozgov, who was about to enter FA, was traded for 2 first rd picks to Cleveland. Cavs would then go on to win the championship but Mozgov would depart to sign with the Lakers.

I think Poetl is slightly better now than Mozgov was back then.

We’ll see how many of these teams are actually willing to stick to their asking price through the trade deadline. For now teams can ask for or leak whatever they want.

I’m not convinced teams see the Gobert trade as anything more than a desperate GM paying a dumb price.

I wonder how Ainge opened up negotiations for Gobert trade. He must have requested 20 first rounders at the start.

G R E Y wrote:This isn't news. Our position is we want to keep Jakob and know his value to us. We have his Bird Rights and he really likes it here plus we have a ton of cap space.

We have a strong negotiation position. So unless a team offers something that moves us from our preference we're happy to keep him.

We got a first swap for a second for Thad Young who almost never played for us.

We got a first and swap and two very good for our purposes rotational players for Derrick White.

This has nothing to do with Gobert and more to do with what it would take for us to budge. This two 1sts stance has remained consistent since at least the beginning of the season if not summer. Either way, it's not new. Teams know exactly what it would take to pry him away. Otherwise, we love Jakob and would rather keep him.

We have other tradeable pieces, too, so there's other ways of acquiring more draft capital. No pressure to do anything with Jakob unless the asking price is met.

I am pretty sure that Poeltl has stated that he wants to play for a contender, so there is a 0% chance he resigns with the Spurs. If they want to lose him for nothing because of an outrageous asking price that is the Spurs problem then.

Who doesn't. That's if he gets traded, I believe. But relationships and roles matter. All interviews I've read in English and German translation have stated how happy he is in SA. Don't blame him for wanting to get paid, he deserves it, and we can do it. We're a top pick and great signing away from being back in the POs at least. Both sides know what they have in each other. So unless you have a source about the Spurs having zero chance of re-signing him, best not to speculate.

I think PATFO have a better read on their relationship with Jakob and chances of his staying with us. If they were really at zero, I highly doubt the price would be what it is as we'd try to get something back rather than lose him for nothing as opposed to the current asking price.

If we don't trade Jakob, we still retain his Bird Rights. So which contender has the cap space to sign him outright for what he wants?

As I said, we know the leverage we have, and that includes Jakob's willingness to stay, for the right price, which we are in a position to meet.

Mozgov had another year under contract. Was traded for in January 2015 and was under contract through 2016. Signed with the Lakers after the 2016 season.

Poetl is slightly better than Mozgov then. But is on an expiring deal.

I’m not saying he sucks, I’ve been following his progress since he was traded there. He’s developed great in San Antonio. I’m just saying a trade to a contender might help his name get more exposure and opportunity for a bigger prize.
