I think there are a couple underlying things that our front office are considering:
- You can’t make it blatantly obvious that you’re tanking, especially this year. The league is all over this and will continue to be.
- If you do luck into the first or second pick, you don’t necessarily want to leave the roster bare. Victor is one of those generational players that if you add him to a roster, you’re going to be become a playoff team at least. Victor plus this roster is a title contender. It’s so tempting to just blow it up, but young teams don’t automatically turn into contenders so you can’t risk moving everyone in the chance we get the top pick.
I do think they see that a change needs made. This core hasn’t worked and Scottie’s game (no matter how good he becomes) likely won’t elevate the team to a championship level, so there’s no sense paying for this core. It comes down to who they want to pay at the end of the day. If they’re around after the deadline, it probably means we’re going to pay them and we’re gonna have to be willing to overspend after this season.
I won’t be shocked if that’s any of them, but I’d probably rank the likelihood in this order:
- Fred
- GTJ
- OG
- Siakam
The best part is that there are a ton of suitors out there, so it’s a seller’s market. Get some young assets, some picks, and keep your roster decent in the process.
