RIP Schonz

we spend a lot of time talking about talent here...well, when it comes to broadcast play-by-play talent, there are two kings for me: Keith Jackson in football and of course, Schonley in basketball. He was able to call the game in such a way that you could see it real time in your mind's eye. And he combined that talent with class and integrity

Wow, such great memories. I remember a time when people turned down the TV and turned up the radio just to listen to The Schonz call the game. We were so fortunate to have him, even in the years following his retirement. I always love The Schonz on the radio and Snapper on TV. Blazers broadcasting has had some great talent over the years. Schonz is an icon.

Before every game was on tv I would listen to the games on the radio. His energy while describing the game showed he was a real fan of both the team and basketball. One of the all time greats of sports broadcasting whether it be tv or radio. He will be long remembered.

I’m not old enough to remember him broadcasting but i would always see him whenever I would go to games and say hello. Not gonna lie, I got a little emotional reading about his passing in Canzano’s article. Rip City Forever.

Another Blazer legend dies, if there is one announcer that should get a plaque or statue at Moda it's easily Schonley. I also didn't grow up with Schonz, but I can recognize his greatness, on top of that he stuck around this city and supported the Blazers even after he retired.

[Myth]

RIP. I felt pretty lucky to have talked to him twice, and both times he demonstrated such charm with the fans. Once when I was in college and brought my brother down to the court after a game to meet him and get his autograph. The other time was at the 2007 draft lottery party. I remember moments after we win that lottery asking him where it ranked for him in all-time Blazers moments, and he said #2 behind the championship. I suspect with hindsight he non longer considered that his 2nd favorite Blazers moment.

Man I remember my dad and I listening to the Shonz painting the picture via kex radio listening to the Blazers winning the title. It was such a staple of my young life. Based on what he would say you could paint the picture in your mind.
