This way we have a uniform way of tackling this specific issue.

I'm not sure the details of that one so can't comment too much. It does suck when a deal falls thru though so feel for all involved.

In general not sure i like the idea of a 2 hour window. But open to ideas and maybe not understanding it fully

Having just gotten home from my 11 hour work day, I see 28 PMs in my inbox and figured something happened...reading the last couple of pages before opening any of these PM's I'm not sure I understand...maybe I'll see better after reading what happened via PM. But as for a rule change...I don't understand what it would entail? Two hour window for what exactly?

I'd say to process a deal. Like if a trade gets in at 9 it's not locked in until 11 just in case there's an issue.

 sorry bish.

To make it (sort of) simple:

1. The trade I assumed was happening was simply Jrue for 2010's San Antonio pick, so I can tank. The San Antonio pick had the Kings swap rights (aka mine), able to swap with Indiana (who owns my pick). It was discussed via PM with me making sure that I had full control of that pick. And me getting confirmation, which I assumed was me receiving the pick. Easy enough, was going to submit my end...

2. 2010 told me to copy + paste the version he sent in because it was part of a bigger trade (this is where we both **** up), so I said sure, that works. so I sent it. It wasn't until I triple checked it, and he thought I owned that Indiana pick, so he wanted to remove the swap rights so that I would benefit from it... only that Indiana has the pick. That wasn't what was discussed at all, and is the opposite of "having full control of my pick." I had saw the "Sacramento receives 2023 1st rounder" and assumed I was getting that pick back, not that Toronto was keeping the pick AND removing swap rights. That's not something I agreed to prior:

Image

Image

I assumed 2010 was sending me the SA pick, he assumed he was just removing rights on a pick I had. Should I have triple checked everything like a lawyer? Sure, but it was a special scenario where we both thought different things entirely. No snaking or "gotchas" by anyone.

3. So that's where we are now. If the trade goes through it means:

I lose Jrue for literally nothing.
Raptors still keep a Spurs swapless 1st rounder.
I am now tanking for another team altogether in Indiana

If the trade goes through, then there's no reason for me to play anymore because I'm tanking for another team in a trade I didn't agree to happening

I understand that trades fall apart due to language issues. It happens more than most people would think. Although most GM's have gotten better at understanding the cap, I am routinely rejecting trades due to cap issues, draft pick issues, NTC issues, etc. I understand this can be frustrating to teams who are negotiating in good faith.

My question, and what I don't understand at this time, is what kind of rule change we are talking about to keep this from happening?

Sorry E-Balla, I'm not putting this up for a vote...my time is especially limited now between work and coaching my HS team. I get to these PM's when I can and on the regular spend 1-2 hours at the computer this time of year, usually after 9PM. Once things get submitted, if they are legal and I am on the computer, I am processing it to get it out of my inbox.

My suggestion, rather than a rule change, would be to delay sending things into me yourself. I don't process anything until I get all teams involved to send me a PM. Usually why I like when a team puts the other team(s) involved in the subject line so I don't mistakenly open a PM without all teams already submitting. If you are having second thoughts about anything or if you feel there maybe an issue, don't send in your PM until you feel comfortable with what you are sending.

Owning the swap rights of the SAC pick before hand I could see how that could be confusing. You would need to know SAC traded his worse part of the pick to Indy to know you can't just send back the swap rights otherwise Indy would have gotten a nice surprise

But I could see how there could be confusion but I don't think a rule needs to be in place. Soul said he was up late so maybe that is why he was a bit confused but everyone should know there own pick situation.

Hopefully no harm was done for any team.

No new rule is necessary. GMs just need to pore over the terms of the deal’s pick language.

My original trade that I sent to bish and SOUL each stated clearly that I’d relinquish the swap rights but maintain ownership of the 2023 Spurs pick. Under the premise that I was operating under, that meant giving SOUL full control over his pick.

If that language is read before the confirmation is sent in to bish, SOUL catches it and realizes that the deal is based on him owning his 2023 1st.

Gotta pore over the terms like a lawyer, yes. My job is to keep track of my picks and which assets I control and communicate if I find error. It’s the burden of other GMs to keep track of their picks and which assets they control, and communicate if they find error before the confirmation and send in to bish.

This is exactly what I sent to SOUL for the agreement confirmation:

--------------------------------------

SACRAMENTO KINGS OUT
Jrue Holiday- $258/4 years
2024 2nd- From New York- (via Portland- via Memphis- via Oklahoma City)
TOTAL: $258

SACRAMENTO KINGS IN
The Toronto Raptors relinquish their right swap the 2023 San Antonio Spurs 1st for the 2023 Sacramento Kings 1st (Toronto still owns the 2023 Spurs 1st)
$258 cap space reduction
TOTAL: $0

--------------------------------------

The underlined portion is to show transparency on my part.

Won't see much of him this year. Too inefficient. He'll replace Iguodala in the lineup next year though as an efficient, defensively solid flex SF/PF option.

Now I got $386 locked up in him, Hami (57% from the field this year, 70% in the last month), Allen, and both McDaniels brothers. Should have a great super efficient frontcourt again next year.
