Another ref controversy: Celtics vs Raptors

I'm surprised a thread hasn't been made about this yet, but I figured I might as well do the honors and make one myself.

Normally I don't make a big deal about late game calls in the sport of basketball. A lot happens throughout the game that leads to how the game plays out in the final minutes, and ultimately, those are a bigger factor in the outcome. It's illogical to pin the entire outcome of a game on one call.

With that said, we've had a lot of complaints about the officiating this year. And we've had a lot of threads about how bad the calls have been. But what happened here is an example of just utter incompetence on the part of the officiating.

The NBA probably isn't going to make a big deal out of this, but in my opinion? This needs to be the final straw. Enough has happened already and fans are actually turning away from the product now in part due to how poor of a job the refs are doing. No one denies how hard the job is. We all deny the idea that they should get a pass because of it. It's time that something changes, because it's not showing any signs of getting better.

Refs not knowing the rules is such an embarrassment.

The only accountability we get is that bad refs don't get promoted to the playoffs and the 2 minute report.

We as fans need more than this.

Not just that call. That game has a lot of really bad calls, going both ways (I mean, hey at least they seemed to be consistently bad). If the NBA really does something about the supposed games they review, that crew should not officiate another game for a long time.

The whole review system sucks and I’d rather they just didn’t have it if they’re not going to do it properly.

But this was not a foul against NY at the end of the game that was not called on RJ slam.
Payback is a bi**h.

If you don't take NBA as a sport, then the refs are doing a good job.

Am I just too naive to think it should be as easy as Nurse wanting to review it followed by someone in a replay center watching the play over a couple times and making the right call. I don't think it would take more than like 30 seconds. Seems like everything is so drawn out with the way they do it now. And I get why they do it but the inconsistency with what can and can't be challenged is just dumb

Well just so Nurse doesn't blow a gasket he can calm himself down by seeing Siakim never got established in the front court on the inbounds on the back pass from Young. Right foot. I wonder if this makes it to the refs report.
Backcourt violation that wasn't called before the jump ball Nick. It wasn't controversy it was karma

You are missing the point. This isn't about karma or refs favoring one team or the other. This is about a ref not knowing the rules. It is inexcusable and Michael Smith should not be an NBA referee anymore.

NBA refs are **** trash and a number of them are undoubtedly fixing games.

I don't think the technology is nearly there yet for robot refs, but they can't come soon enough.

Incorrect interpretation of rules by the refs should be appealable with a forced restart of action from that point.

this is the thing i dont like. hes going to be benched a game for this without pay most likely for such a mistake.... but it will never get reported. That mistake is the eqivalent to the JR smith mistake in the finals with the timeout. everyone had to answer questions about it. that ref is making 500k a year, our attention pays that salary, we should probably have more transparency about one of the biggest parts of the game.

Wow, I'm not really sure how the hell the ref told them that then turned around and said they couldn't. So did the ref not know the rule at first? How the **** does this even happen?
