I like the idea of Reid for a possible future fit at PG like Hayes or Pritchard. Maybe one of them can blossom here.

What sixth men are paid the MLE or less? You're talking $15 million at the bare minimum.

Well, sixth man has become a depository for guys that got big contracts to be starters, but got bumped to the bench. But if you are signing a player to a new contract for the role of “sixth man,” you don’t want to go over the MLE.

Here’s my really rough financial archetype for a team payroll

$40. #1 Option Superstar
$30. #2 Option Star
$20. #3 Utility Third man (Myles Turner, Aaron Gordon level)
$9. #4 Lottery youth starter
$12. #5 Starter (MLE from free agency)
—————————
$12. Sixth man (MLE from free agency)
$9. Seventh man, high rotation
$7.5. Vet, 8th man, playoff rotation
$6. Occasional, regular season rotation
$5. Occasional, regular season rotation
——————————
$3. Late 1st around Draft prospect
$2. 2nd Round Draft prospect
$2. Vet min - balance roster, injury protection
$2. Vet min - balance roster, injury protection.
—. Open roster spot
———————————————-
$160. Lux Threshold next year, $162.

Now, every team is going to vary. Some have multiple max players. Some have rookies playing important roles. Some want more vets, or more prospects, or more cap space. The key is to find value for the role. A $25 mil DLo isn’t a great way to maximize value if he’s primarily a sixth man. We could maybe afford it one year, but after that ..!

I do too. I think Hayes could at least fill role of defensive PG. He’s also only 21.

Former #7 pick, but he really hasn’t shown why in his first 2.5 years. Usually GM’s would say, “just you wait,” but with Cade and Ivey in front, they are very unlikely to pay him next summer, and he might even struggle for minutes next year in DET.

A few years ago I would have been all for acquiring a struggling player with upside, but today I think the Wolves need to focus on guys who are ready to contribute to winning games. Hayes has never figured out how to even approach being a net positive on the court.

I'm not sure it makes much sense to add another developmental player to Moore/Minott/Knight all of whom I like better than Hayes.

I would also be on the phone with the raptors.

Min:
Out- Gobert, Nowell
In - Trent, Boucher, Young, Koloko

This is horrible for us. Trent is a decent starter, Boucher is not very good- I'd say overpaid. Young is meh and Koloko is just a small prospect. This is greatly undervaluing Rudy.

I don't mind asking for the moon in return for Russell. He hasbeen a key part to staying afloat without Towns. And hey, as we know all too well, it doesn't hurt to ask because the worst they can say is no.

I would probably expect picks, but this gets us off Goberts contract. I'm still dealing Dlo as well.

Ant, Rivers, McLaughlin
Trent, Prince, Moore
McDaniels, Young, Minott
Anderson, Boucher, Knight
Reid (Towns when back), Garza, Koloko

Not to mention what we add for Dlo

I see your point. I look at it as we don’t have a lot of options to add upside players so fine with 2 ways and last few roster spots being developmental. Plus we have developmental wings and bigs but not PGs. Also like to get the Bagley, Portis, and similar then just say you have only one or two jobs and neither are carry the franchise.

(Started the response 2 hours ago but had beer with neighbor. If this all seems irrelevant or duplicating points I apologize.)

Tonight, his primary assignment was Zaire Williams. Tyus Jones and David Roddy on the second unit. None of them killed us. And if they are killing us instead of Morant, Jackson or Brooks, so be it.

Small sample theater.

Russell has never finished a season 50 / 40 / 90.

This is his best ever, at 46 / 38 / 87. His career is 42 / 36 / 79

We don’t have any on the team. Kat is the only one even close, so I guess this helps make the point of why we shouldn’t trade Kat.

Dlo is on a hot streak. We know he has them. This one is even better because he’s been moved off the ball, resulting in better shots created for him, less hero ball, and less opportunity for stupid turnovers.

When Kat is back, SloMo will go to the bench. This will expose Dlo’s weaknesses again. Kat’s weak defense will also expose Dlo’s defense more.

Dlo is a really good player. He is just not a good fit on this roster, especially at his price. If we could turn him into Tyus and Buddy Hield, we would be much better off on the court and on the payroll past next year.

Good post. You made me go look up KAT

He’s shot over FG 50% 7 of 8 seasons
He’s shot over 3P 40% 4 of 8 seasons
And he’s never shot FT 90%. This is his closest season at 88.5%

50/40/90 is a tremendous feat. Only nine players have ever done it for a whole season. (Larry Bird, Mark Price, Reggie Miller, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Malcolm Brogdon and Kyrie Irving posting). I was hoping to see Wally Szczerbiak.

Reid/Prince for Alex Caruso?

Wolves get a defensive minded back court partner for Edwards.

Bulls get Reid so they can avoid having to overpay the 32 year old Vucevic

He’s in a groove, coming into his prime, on an upward trajectory, etc.

I don’t think we’d be selling high. He’s still improving. NBA players can improve until 30 or even older. And DLo has that old man game that can last forever.
