Way too early Kendrick Nunn appreciation thread.

Post#1 » by doclinkin » Sun Jan 29, 2023 3:38 pm

Cold with no practice the young vet steps in to do exactly what we hoped Will Barton would do. Solid 20 minutes of energy off the bench. Playing with hustle at both ends. Quickfoot attack to get opponents off balance. Scoring efficiently when he gets past the defense. Sprinkling in a few assists. Any team would be happy to pick up a guy who in 20 mins gives you 12pts 3r 2 ast 1 steal and posts a 4:1 assist to TO ratio.

Small sample size but I appreciate that he was able to pick up and play well immediately.

"Any team would be happy..." -- I'll say! :) -- 2200 minutes like his 22 minutes, & he wins MVP !! :)

Love to see him succeed w/ us, obviously!

The Lakers may have been a bad fit as far as roster construction for Nunn who already had Westbrook, Beverly, and Schroeder (who closed out the overtime against the Celtics).

The undrafted Nunn had two good seasons in Miami. Then he was an afterthought in LA this season after missing all of last season. Nunn is probably just beginning to be fully healthy.

Shep struck gold (so to speak) in trading for Gaff. Might he have done it again with Nunn? We'll see.

Struck gold or bronze? And does it even matter? We have no money to pay Kuz without additional moves. Unless Nunn is coming back for the minimum, I assume he's playing elsewhere next year as well.

I keep saying Shepp hitting singles does not move the needle but we keep celebrating the singles like it really means anything.

This is the truth. Yeah Tommy seems to have a knack for finding diamonds in the rough in little trades like this, but the only thing that matters is results. And we still suck ass.

On top of which, we are 8-3 in our last 11 away games!

In fact, strangely, we have a relatively good road record -- only 11 teams have been better on the road so far this season.

He's been given the go off the bench and him and Deni look good filling that void Rui left.

He’s the most athletic player on the team. It’s striking.

Add another and who knows what we might be.

By the way: his off-ball defense is really good — it’s noticeable.

I think it brings up the point no one talks about. LeBron makes a certain type of player look better. But, he makes other types of players actually worse when they have to change how they play to fit in his orbit.

That’s pretty much how it is with all of the great/dominant players, particularly those who have the ball in their hands most of the time. The lesser players have to adjust to their strengths and weaknesses.

Jordan made Steve Kerr and John Paxson look better because MJ drew all the attention and Kerr and Paxson knew how to take advantage of that.

But most players want to play with the Lebron’s of the world because it significantly increases their chances of advancing to the conference championship and/or winning a ring.

In the case of Nunn though, his primary problem in LA was health and getting playing time behind Russ, Schroeder and Pat Bev.

Is it just me or does Kendrick Nunn look bigger than 6'2"/6'3" when he is on court. He looks bigger than Beal. Optical illusion or what.

yes, he is listed at 6'2" but bizarrely I had the same impression. I don't think he was measured at the combine. I could not find any definitive info on his wingspan, though few sites give him a 6'5" wingspan...

A slightly taller, slightly less athletic Eric Bledsoe. Both were slowed by severe knee injuries.

KP showing some love for Nunn. (from today's Washington Post):

Porzingis appreciated that Nunn adds a level of aggression to a team that tends to grow stagnant on offense. Against Golden State, generating any movement outside of Porzingis and Beal attacking with the ball in their hands felt like strenuous work — especially because the Wizards weren’t getting defensive stops to give themselves time to take a breath on offense.

“I think he’s playing aggressive. He’s getting in the paint, which is important for us,” Porzingis said. “He’s experienced. … He helps us. He’s physical, plays hard. I’m happy about him joining us and giving us a spark. This guy, he was out for a year, and I know how it is. He’s working his way back, and I think … it was a great trade because K. Nunn, when he got traded here, his value was a little bit lower than it would be usually. I’m telling you, this guy’s only going to get better with each game.”

I don’t expect Nunn to be here next year, but I haven’t really gotten all the negativity about him I see in the game threads. His job seems to be primarily to score points off the bench and secondarily to set up others to score points. Sometimes he seems to focus too much on scoring before thinking about sharing the ball, but he’s been getting points and assists, and basically doing what we’d hoped Barton might do. It’s not like he’s consistently killing us out there. I think it’s kind of fun to watch.

Small sample size theater of course but with the Wizards Nunn is almost a 50/40/90 guy (48.6 fg%, 39.4 3P%, 90 FT%).

And leads the team in on/off differential.
