Ultimately, I think the Raps are in the driver's seat. It sounds strange to say about a losing team, but we have no urgency to try and win it all now. We are young still. We still have all our picks. And it is a market with few sellers, where we have the best players potentially available.

No bad contracts back, no trading our 1st's or future assets. We should be looking to outright win a trade, like Ainge. Forget about making a fair deal.

Tough task for Masai this deadline.

Trade OG, presumably extending Trent, and we lose an incredible defender to carry on with a guy who is still at times a defensive liability. QED yesterday's horrible first half as Bridges' primary defender.

Trade Fred and we lose a guy who's probably helped keep the locker room sane and who, if healthy, might still be a formidable 3+D guard going forward.

Trade Trent and we're losing our best shooter and a guy who has progressed pretty well in other facets of his game.

So if I'm reading this correctly, I'd be inclined to trade Fred now and avoid the risk of him leaving for nothing to a team with cap space.

There’s some speculation that it was based on Cam Johnson + 2 1sts, but I think there’s an alternate angle here, with Ayton going to the Raps and Crowder going to the Bucks.

Here’s the deal:

Suns in: OG Anunoby, Gary Trent, Chris Boucher, Serge Ibaka, George Hill, MIL ‘24 2nd
Suns out: DeAndre Ayton, Jae Crowder, [salary]

Raps in: DeAndre Ayton, Jordan Nwora, POR ‘24 2nd
Raps out: OG Anunoby, Gary Trent, Chris Boucher

Bucks in: Jae Crowder, [PHO salary]
Bucks out: George Hill, Jordan Nwora, Serge Ibaka, 2 ‘24 2nds

The Bucks get their guy in Crawford. The Raps get their starting Center. And the Suns move on from some recent troubled guys to a refreshed roster, with 2 of the deadliest defenders in the NBA:

Chris Paul / Cam Payne / George Hill
Devin Booker / Gary Trent / Landry Shamet
Mikal Bridges / Cam Johnson / Torrey Craig
OG Anunoby / Chris Boucher / Dario Saric
Biz Biyombo / Serge Ibaka / (Boucher + Saric)

I love this so much for the Suns. They also get a Chris Paul playoff insurance policy in George Hill, and an instant 6th man in Gary Trent. Their owner has said he’s willing to pay out, which would indicate a willingness to re-up Trent this summer. Their centers would rotate based on matchups.

A duo of Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby would instantly become the best defensive forward duo in the NBA, and likely one of the best in the NBA in a long time. To find such an imposing defensive duo, we’d have to go back to Detroit (Ben Wallace + Rasheed Wallace) or Spurs (David Robinson + Tim Duncan) to find as strong of a defensive front court.
In both cases, these teams won the NBA championship.

If Phoenix wants to go all in with CP3+Book, the move is to go all in with Anunoby.

For the Raps, we would also move FVV, and do a quick retool with a top 5 pick next year. Plus Siakam and Ayton are young enough that they can still work for the next half decade.

Assume Fred fetches the rumored Mann + ‘28 1st + 2nd (gained by rerouting whatever we get from LAC). This is what we get:

Scottie Barnes
Terence Mann / Jordan Nwora
Pascal Siakam
Precious Achiuwa
DeAndre Ayton / Christian Koloko

+ all of our picks including a top 5 ‘23 pick, extra 2nds in ‘23 and ‘24, and an extra ‘28 1st.

If we can get a high end playmaking shooter in the draft, this team will be set.

I don’t absolutely hate it because I think that just bringing in a Center and balance out the team better even if losing OG is a smart move, but good lord is Ayton completely underwhelming. Plays soft, passion less. Maybe the Raptors can fix him and getting out of Phoenix might help but damn that’s a kind of a mid move if I’ve even seen one and I think the Raptors would need to a bit more whether it’s Cam Johnson who I would love or another 1st (although I can’t see Phoenix talking themselves into trading a first and Ayton) I also think in this case we keep Fred because we wouldn’t have a single legit PG on the team and play making takes a huge hit.

I think it’s pretty simple and I look at this clear eyed. You trade the guys that you don’t think will resign or you don’t want to resign (Gary/Van Vleet). You try to move dead weight to clear cap space (Otto Porter, Birch, Boucher, Flynn, Thad). And you try to get a team to overpay for Siakim or OG, otherwise hold onto them and reassess in the offseason where more options open up and teams are more willing to make big trades. The nice thing about the position that the Raptors are in is that they’ll get a decent draft slot, have ammunition to move up and also have the foundation of a playoff team even without a superstar trade.

Honestly I think Fred and Trent wanting to re-sign is a load of bull. If you want to come back you don't fire your agent pre-trade deadline and sign with one of the most mercenary agents. Fred is going to where the money is. So trade him. Trent is going to get overpaid so trade him. OG is not happy and wants more PT trade him. Boucher and Birch are overpaid trade them if you can.

One thing y'all should NOT be concerned about is FVV potentially leaving for nothing! ain't happening. The relationship is too strong, at worst a Kyle-like-sign&trade-to-Miami.
We made Junior a starter and gave him 3/54. The relationship is very strong there too, though obviously it has only been a 2-year relationship.

Heres my deadline id be happy with

I like this as an OG deal

To PHX:
OG
Juancho
Serge Ibaka

To Toronto
George Hill (waived)
Dario Saric
Jordan Nwora
PHX 2023 1st top 3 protected
PHX 2025 UNP 1st
2027 UNP
3 seconds (from bucks)

To Milwauke:
Jae Crowder

Fred to Orlando. they get the guy they want in the door to extend him for next season. Raptors get a mid Lotto pick to add to theirs.

To Orlando:
Fred VanVleet

To Toronto:
Terrance Ross
Mo Bamba
2023 Bulls 1st

Keep Gary Trent with the hopes of resigning him. Siakam wont be dealt this deadline but revisit at the draft

Bamba/Koloko
Precious/Saric
Pascal/Nwora/Young
Trent/Ross
Barnes/Flynn

probably much worse as a team to go for the lotto. Going into the offseason you get cap flexibility and picks in the 2023 1st round. Id be extremely happy with this outcome.

Pritchard is a nice buy low candidate.
He can be a very solid role player for us.

McDaniels has upside. He's been impressive this season and continues to improve.

Both would bolster our bench significantly, particularly Pricharard IMO.

How has masai and Bobby been able to sleep every night knowing that they have the worst bench in the history of the nba. Assemble something before our main guys are 6 feet under from being dead tired. Depth is needed so badly

There are certainly people around the league that think he (Trent) can eclipse that $20 million mark. I’m not sure if he gets to the $25 million mark.

Regarding VanVleet’s extension talks before the season, I was told that the four-year, $114 million extension offer was never going to be high enough since VanVleet, who’s one of the top free agents entering the market this summer, considered himself somewhere in the $30-35 million average annual range, which is similar to Jrue Holiday’s average annual salary (this season), for example.

trent for under $100/4 sign him asap
fvv for $120-140/4, pass

FVV is going to get paid $30M+

GTJ hasn't proven himself enough to get paid into $30M mark yet. 4 years gets him to 28 right. at the rate he's growing, he's going for a max contract after that if he can prove the next 3 years he can be a featured offensive player. if we can get him to sign a 4y/100M deal i say do it.
raf1995 wrote:I just don’t think he has that kind of potential. I think we will regret not trading him for a haul in a few years when he’s a mid-tier starter with nice playmaking and defense and a shaky jumper.

I'd take Trent at $23M/yr, that'd be a nice deal for him. But you gotta move Fred. He's the peice that has to go.

It will be a tough task. It seems highly unlikely that the team can show enough in the 4 games remaining till the deadline to make a case for being a buyer or standing pat. The only real question is whether to sell selectively, and stealth tank the rest of the season, or blow it up. Given Masai's track record, I don't see us blowing things up. So, who gets moved?

From where we sit, you could make a case for any one of Trent, Van Vleet or OG. Bobby and Masai will have a multitude of scenarios moving forward, but a critical factor will be the motivation level of potential trade partners, and the assets they're willing to part with to get one of those three. Potential trade partners will be aware of the asking price for each, which will be very high in this market, and these next 4 games are mostly a chance for Van Vleet and Trent to continue to showcase themselves while waiting for the buyers to get desperate.

I have previously suggested that both Trent and Van Vleet need to grow, but I'm no longer so sure. My inclination is still to move Fred, but we'll see how things play out.

The only reason the Raps were able to do a sign-and-trade was because the Heat wanted to sign PJ Tucker with the MLE. I highly doubt it was because Kyle didn’t want to leave for nothing.

It’ll be the same for Fred. He owes nothing to the Raptors as a UFA.

The one thing even the biggest Fred fans have to admit is the guy is going to wear the uniform next season of whatever team pays him the most money. I’m not shaming him for that. Get your bag. I just don’t want the Raptors getting into a bidding war paying up to $35 million a year because they’re trying to outbid Orlando.
