Still prefer Fred to LAC.

Weren't we likely going to get 3 FRP's from the Suns anyway? So we're throwing in Fred just to get an additional FRP and then having to take on Shamet's awful contract? That seems like pretty poor value. Better off trading Fred to another team for a better deal.

I'm pretty sure the OG deal was Cam +2 1sts. 3 1sts would be pretty rich even for OG. Fred in my opinion is worth 1.5 1sts atm so taking on Shamet's contract should give us an additional two.

But I generally agree that Fred going to another team will probably make more sense, this was just an idea I threw around for fun.

Makes no sense to only trade OG.

I would trade GTJ and Fred before him.

maybe another lotto pick this year, maybe another lotto pick next year.
have picked in the lotto top 4, four or five times past decade. enough with the lakers invisibility talk. (randle ball ingram deangleo russell)

caris lavert with 1.5 years got (projected 24th pick this year to pacers) was a lotto protected pick becoming a 2nd.
derrick white with 3-4 years on contract got 24th pick and a swap.

The Lakers have 5 years to not become a lottery team. I don't think we are in a position to be betting on picks 5 and 7 years down the road. That would be a pretty disappointing trade in my opinion.

To you maybe they aren't valuable. But in analyst circle they are considered prime assets. Because they probably be unprotected. and time line doesn't matter since you can trade them. You could get 20th pick from some other teams right now, but the unknown pick down the road has more value.

This is the adult version of failing the marshmallow test.

If you tried trading Fred to a team that's sitting in the 7th seed in the west right now, they wouldn't even dream of giving you this year's pick without protections. Most of these teams are an injury away from sinking like a stone.

Even a 5% chance of losing out on the top pick is too much risk.

But a team could potentially talk themselves into a pick 6 + years down the line like that.

It's incredible value for a non-star to fetch.

I don’t think he’s saying that the contract is a bad contract right now…it sounds more like he’s saying that OG will be a free agent in the summer next year and that Masai doesn’t want to pay him the $35M+/yr deal that OG is looking for.

OG being traded does not mean Fred is staying for sure.

I think both needs to go

Trent can stay (Age + shooting is a need)

If this was just the strategy would you even need a GM? I feel like all the Gen Zs on here could manage the raptors if that was the case

Dw, we wont be tanking.

It is such a cowardly strategy. Masai won't go that low

Throwing the towel in on the season - yes. Prolonged sixers-type tank - no

This hack knows nothing. The fact that Masai took a gamble on Kawhi (it worked out) but walked without any assets coming back is risk ending in poor asset management. Masai would have extended demar if Kawhi deal didn't come up at an opportune time

I just checked Shamet’s contract…how is it “awful”? $10M expiring after next season. Can’t do anything else but shoot but considering how much guys like Kennard and Duncan Robinson get paid for same thing, it’s not “awful” at all especially since it expires in a year.

It’s actually a very nice contract to have for a potential trade next year due to all the non-guaranteed years and team options in it.

I dare say OG will be far happier in the 3&D role while playing behind someone like Booker.

Grass is always greener. I'm sure the Raptors have the most accurate read of the situation. Maybe he doesn't want to sit through a rebuild while his ticket comes up.

I just don't know what more OG can do in an efficient offense. He's an excellent defensive player that is athletic finisher in transition or off cuts. And is a solid but streaky shooter. No handle, no mid range game, no post game, no playmaking (more turnovers than assists).

On a championship team OG is a Tayshaun Prince/2010 Ron Artest. A vital role but not one that calls for many isos/mid range/post ups which I assume he means with his role. This isn't the first time OGs been unhappy either and his role was a part of it in Sept/Oct as well.

We may be blowing all of this way out of proportion. I can't see anyone other than FVV and Pascal Siakam being happy in this offense. A simple tweak with more ball movement will probably keep everyone happy and keep the other 3 players on the court in better rhythm throughout the game.

You're also way downplaying OG's potential impact on a championship caliber team. He would have a Pascal Siakam championship level impact on a team.

So was Masai a coward in 2021?

That was just a confluence of COVID, Tampa, injury situation they took advantage of.
